Yamaha Heavyweight: The PSR-8000 (part 1)

Let's go back to the 90's, to one of Yamaha's former Flagships: The PSR-8000. Actually the 9000 was the real flagship at the time, but even by today's standards the PSR-8000 is an impressive vessel. The soundset is just basic XG but it has a large range of filters and effects, all backed up with 44.1khz sampling. This is Part 1, in which we run through some of the preset sounds.

Again, it’s a fantastic, flagship instrument released during November 1997, and yes, I owned one of these mean machines years ago. It’s the first in the range to have on board the sweet saxophone and other new stunning sounds back then.

Why sound drum style so compressed? Did You use external master comressor and EQ?

I had the PSR-8000. It's not a stripped down PSR-9000. The 9000 is the successor of the 8000 and the Tyros is the succesor of the 9000 . The soundset is not just basic XG, because the 8000 has many more megabytes of samples than the standard 4Mb XG soundset. It's a very versatile tool for basic studio productions.

Completely agree with you. I have a PSR-730 and its sounds are vert good, but PSR 8000 is much better. PSR-730 has 6 MB wave ROM, PSR-8000 has 12 MB!

Itls still a workhorse. Love those good old powerfull sounbds. I beleive most of these samples were later imported into the psr E series. I Enjoyed the video.

I have had the PSR-8000 for many years and now I have a problem with the Disc Drive, it does not read, can this disc be repaired or should I replace this disc? Thank you for your help.

It can be upgraded to a USB drive, I think you can get kits to do it online.

I own a Tyros 3 with all the styles of the PSR 8000 in it, but I keep this instrument because I can't get rid of it.... I've loved this instrument ever since I bought it new.....

Yep, basically. The 8000 has a few extra editing options but it's all loosely based on the Yamaha XG sound set which was a new thing around the time the 8000 was released. Old new now :)

yeah, remember your sampling to a disc so it takes a while to save & load. have you inserted the batteries so the keyboard will save your settings when you switch off?

I had it's successor the psr9000 v3. Added a cf2ide adapter instead of a spinning HD and upped the ram to 32mb was brilliant for sampling.

PSR-4000 is another name for the PSR-7000 released at the same time (1995) like E Series and their YPT brothers. 8000 is the sucessor of the 7000/4000 launched in 1997 so there will be a little missing.

I think the seller will be asking much more than that, 50 quid sounds like immense lowballing to me... I'd be surprised if they wanted less than 200 but hey if they are only asking 50 then go for it

Can you record the arrangement on a USB flash drive in MIDI format thanks to your keys and send to me? These keys have this auto arrangement like: Slow Ballad, 16-Ballad 1, 16-Ballad 2. Could you record these styles on your chords? Each of the arrangements would have to be 3 minutes long. I have no money for such keyboards, and I hope music is your passion.
