Science can change with more evidence and typically the downsides of any human created interventions are opaque at the beginning and the producers fight to the last to keep their money making product up and running with a good number of consumers locked into their product. So it is good to be suspicious where there's a question about a product especially a chemical that can kill living organisms

You are right on the matter here, Dr. Gill. I am a retired PhD material scientist who has worked in diverse specialty products industries for over 45 years. I have dealt with numerous cases of materials commonly used in households and industrial environments that are "potential carcinogens or mutagens" but are indispensable for quality of living. In all cases, it is about being aware and taking adequate precautions while using them or being around them. Even today, we use household cleaners with ammonia, organic solvents, etc., which can impact personal health if not used under proper PPE.

I'm a long time gardener, grew up on a farm. Glyphosate was considered safe, was widely used so seemed being safe was probably correct. BUT... I never had a reason to take a risk. Plus I had to buy it, store it and the plants died over several days so you had a brown weed instead of green weed. Still had to remove the dead weed. Seemed easier to me to just remove the green weed. Learned to use a knife to push into the ground at the stem which loosens the soils and weed pulls out with roots.

The IARC categorizing Glyphosate as a Class 2A "Probably causes cancer" agent (red meat, working as a hairdreser, night shift work, hot beverages are in the same class) was very controversial. The IARC Working Group that made the finding cherry-picked mostly weak studies and used questionable "invited specialists," one of whom immediately signed a contract as a consultant to lawyers suing Monsanto. The IARC finding has to be considered an outlier when compared to the numerous other regulatory agency findings that Glyphosate is safe.

Thank you for this video, very well presented. My take-away here is: even if there are some traces of evidence that show possible links between extreme exposure and some type of cancer, I think I will have to just stash this away into the "not a priority" drawer. In the whole universe of things to focus on that improve your health, this is simply not a priority. What I mean is that focus on the "heavy hitters" that actually have massive proven impact on your overall health. For example, on average, the gained health from like only one hour of good exercise probably offsets three lifetimes of munching on glyphosate.

My main issue with this kind of approach when analyzing the dangers of a substance or nutrient, is that generally speaking, we always do it looking at the worst possible outcome, in this case cancer. What if it causes chronic headaches? What if it causes severe bowl disease? Cancer is awful and deadly, but there’s many other ways to ruin someone’s health other than cancer.

Some context about the IARC: They have evaluated over 1000 substances. Gues how many they have put in group 4, which is "Probably not carcinogenic"? Zero. There used to be one, but they reclassified it. The closest they get is to put something in Group 3, which is "nonclassifiable". Good point about evaluating hazard vs risk. As an example, a 3 inch deep puddle is a drowning hazard because you could pass out and land face first in it, even though the risk of that is exceedingly low.

The thing that cinched it for me was the Agricultural Health Study that followed almost 90 thousand farmers. They have occupational exposure, so if anyone were going to get cancer from glyphosate, it would be them. This is the seventeen-year study you mentioned. GLY has been in use for half a century. If it causes cancer, where are all those cancers? It's the same argument I have with people who claim that cell phones cause brain tumors. Cell phones have been in use for 30 years. Where are all these brain tumors that cell phones are supposed to be causing? If you're going to claim that chemical X causes illness Y, then we should be able to see a lot of illness Y when we look at a population that has been using chemical X for 50 years.

I'm so glad to see this. Thank you for taking on this topic, Gil. It's hard to get a sense of whether to be concerned about glyphosate or just dismiss it, and (to me) you're saying you're not hearing alarms, but you're keeping it on your radar. I'll do the same. You mentioned in the video 'other pesticides' (than glyphosate) and I'd love more on this. We are told by some to eat only organic because otherwise it's dangerous to our health, yet people like Dr Andrea Love, who you link to as providing a different point of view than yours, is one of the people saying conventionally-grown produce is better and, essentially, safer than conventional. After reading and listening to a number of her posts, I was starting to wonder if organic produce was regulated at all, and whether the ("legacy" I think they call them) pesticides they use in organic farming (the one that's almost always brought up is copper sulphate, which seems to be used on blueberries and maybe grapes, but not sure what else?) are in fact far more dangerous than pesticides like glyphosate, partly because it/they apparently need/s to be used in higher doses to be similarly effective, but partly because they bioaccumulate faster/more insidiously than newer pesticides like glyphosate (it's unclear if that's in humans or in the environment, though neither is great). What threw me off, though, was her certainty. Is it really that straightforward that organic is just a gimmick? I would love if you were able to lay out what's been studied about organic pesticides. I also want to say I appreciate your approach, and how you present the findings. It must take a lot of effort and time.

We note funding source as we're going through but the truth is when you look at a topic systematically (as opposed to an isolated publication), funding rarely makes a big difference (because you're looking for a consistency of findings across different publications/teams etc). In this case for example the cohort studies that were the main source of our concern were not industry-funded. A few narrative reviews funded by Monsanto took a more optimistic view but those have low weight anyway

The connection between different studies and different blood cancers is odd but should not raise our index of suspicion. Every cancer is essentially a different disease. Also, if there IS an effect it is marginal, and we are talking only about those who use the chemical on farm crops. The IARC measures hazard, not risk. So, the act of "drinking water" is mortality HAZARD from the point of view that, if you drink 5 litres quickly it will kill you but the RISK of "drinking water" is negligible. Bottom line: Perhaps at most a marginal risk to those who use large doses such as farmers, but no risk from residues on food - which should be washed in any case - no risk from using the chemical on weeds around the home - but wear long pants don't use in windy conditios - but all the alternatives are all demonstrably worse.

I assume most agricultural workers are relatively young and healthy. If you look at young people who smoke and then scope out 5 or 10 years, you'll probably find little to no lung cancer. I think some of these cancers are very slow growing. This is how the tobacco industry was able to muddle the evidence for so many decades. I don't know if that factor was controlled for in these studies with glyphosate or if it's even possible.

To sum it up, our director, who was pro organic gardening, felt glyphosate was even safer than broad-leafed herbacides, broke down faster, etc. She recommended it, but only when used as directed. The compounds do not linger in the environment. Breaks down into inert compounds. Unlike plastic! Plastic is persistent in the environment and everyone is still using that everywhere!

I think the studies do speak for themselves, the risk is infinitely lower than driving a car and I have to do that to work in a job I don't want to do to earn money... so I am not going to sweat the miniscule risk of developing a generally treatable form of cancer.

I'd just say since we probably can't eliminate glyphosate contact 100%, it's best to avoid it. I used to be a heavy user of Round-up and saw the results on my grape vines, and seedling apple trees getting sick and feeling a bit off when I came in direct contact with undiluted liquid glyphosate. My observational study of 1 is totally 100% unreliable and unscientific. For a lot of reasons, I try organic food purchases, especially with oats.

Thank you for this unbiased look at glyphosate. While I'm not an expert, I wanted to bring a few points to your attention. There are other very common crops sprayed with glyphosate besides the GMO versions you mention in the video. This is generally done just before harvest so the crops are killed and dried out for easier machine harvesting. Wheat is very commonly sprayed with glyphosate, to my understanding. I'm not sure if they do this with rice. Also, this process may vary across the globe. Another point, which you already touched on, is that exposure during spraying may have a very different effect than ingestion. I think it would be helpful to investigate whether ingestion disrupts the microbiome and how that leads to health issues. It would be good to see/summarize studies on the effect of glyphosate on microbiome changes and their health effects. We've heard a lot about how a diverse/strong microbiome is very important for good health.

Within a week, I noticed a positive change in my digestion and my skin issues cleared up. (Adult acne, flakiness, redness). It was the only change I’d made. (If anyone is wondering, I usually buy Target’s Good & Gather brand of organic oats now.)

According to research, glyphosate exposure may be a risk factor in development of Parkinson's disease. With law. The problem is, if it is banned, thru bureaucracy and trail studies you can create a similar substance with a slight molecular change (which may work the same), name and label it different and have the whole 5-10 year jumbo again. But still get profits and cause harm, no biggy for the manufacturers. There needs to be a class-based regulation. In the EU, US, etc...

You say that organic crops are grown with other pesticides? You mean all natural ones (dish soap, vegetable oil etc) or do you mean other synthetic chemicals similar to glyphosate? When I learned that grain crops like oats and wheat are deliberately and directly sprayed with glyphosate just prior to harvest in order to "desiccate" them quickly? I switched to organic. Imagine Round Up soaking into the plant and it's never rinsed off. It just goes straight into bread or oats and from there harvested quickly and thence directly into your body. We very often have to make important decisions concerning our health based on limited or flawed data. I'm opting out of glyphosate where and when possible for obvious reasons.

Eg, pyrethrins (naturally occurring compounds) might be allowed in organic farming but not pyrethroids (synthetic) insecticides, yet neither are safe to breath in over extended periods (possible increased Parkinson's Disease risk). Or neem, etc. Plus sometimes the additives (not main active compounds) to pesticide sprays have significant deleterious environmental impacts, eg wetting agents - surfactants (detergents).

I'd love to find out the actual data as to how many farmers actually use herbicides on wheat & oats on harvest. Wheat is grown in drier (& more marginal) climatic cropping areas (sometimes irrigated - ie lack of water more an issue, not wet harvest) & is of lesser value than corn & beans. It's very expensive to use herbicides. I don't see the (long term) value in it. But then, I'm in Australia.

yes but conclusions on health effects have to be based on the scientific evidence. Thanks. I'm still troubled by the fact that glyphosate crosses the blood-brain barrier, one of its byproducts aminomethylphosphonic acid accumulates in the brain and causes dementia in rodents. Its use may be responsible for the upswing in neurodegenerative diseases...Parkinson's, Alzheimer's etc., that take many years to manifest themselves, beyond the timeline of RTC's.

As a farmer, it’s difficult to zero in on a particular chemical because we are exposed to many chemicals, solvents and fuels. It seems prudent to discontinue glyphosate as a crop desiccant in grain crops. Farmers use to use Paraquat but it seems like the switch to glyphosate was a move in the right direction.

I have been a subscriber for a long time and almost always love your content. But the one thing I don't really understand is why you don't more readily recommend organic produce where it's available. Here where I live it's almost the same price as non-organic. And I know organic doesn't mean it's free of all chemicals but it's definitely better. Similarly, why not recommend non-GMO where it's available because then there is a much better chance they're not using roundup. I do believe Roundup is used on more grain products than you listed as well. Thanks for being a calm and studied voice in a sea of screamers. PS I like your Brazilian outro music.

hi, we don't really issue recommendations per se, we mostly go over the available evidence on different topics so people can make informed choices.
