I had a suspicion that it would work as I use a similar technique quite a lot when using glyph, this is mainly to target a particular species of weed and keep the desirable grasses, though I use it more commercially that for amenity turf. It’s getting the balance right between the rate to kill the target weeds and the rate to kill the couch plus a whole bunch of other things to consider along the way. Definitely one for those who know their way around a roundup bottle! As it’s real easy to get wrong. Another way I have seen it work is when it rains just after spraying. The rain dilutes the concentration and you end up having to spray again because everything gets sick but it doesn’t kill it. Great work and thanks for actually going through with the experiment, well worth it
@theaussielawn4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did it as an apprentice about 1000years ago now cause that’s how we controlled kikuyu back then but we used 1/4 rate 360

Passerby viewer here. The concentration of the concentrate doesn't matter does it? Whether it's 10 or 900 g/L. You would just end up using more or less concentrate do end up with the desired spay mixture right?

@@TheBertjeT Your most welcome mate, one final point re the glyphosate rates. if the product is less concentrated in the bottle to begin with it also means you have a little bit more of a safety gap for measuring if your dealing with 1/4, 1/2 rates etc of "full rate products"

Mate once the paspalum has hung its hat, what's the best way of pulling it out and getting the couch to return? Dethatch? Scarify? Hand pull and top soil/seed?
@theaussielawn2 жыл бұрын
Dig it top dress the barespots and fertilise (to encourage your couch to spread), Id also consider using a pre emergent herbicide too such as Barricade

Thanks mate. I've hit the paspalum with monument already and a second hit spot spraying with monument also. Have put barricade down on the whole lawn and the paspalum is definitely dead and grey. Some of it still purple but it's on the way. I think now I'm facing some pythium issues and where I spot sprayed monument some of the Qld Blue has been knocked a bit too. One problem after another 🥺

Hi mate. I have a long garden bed with lomandra Tanika and the kikuyu made itself at home in the bed around the plants. Do you think this would work around the lomandras. If a little bit got on the lomandras do you think it would kill the plant or just the kikuyu?
@theaussielawn3 жыл бұрын
Google search a chemical by Syngenta called fusilade it might be a better solution or if u want to try the glyphosate just trial a small section and see how you go. I suspect it will be ok but I’d still be ultra careful to avoid contact with the lomandra with glyphosate

Great Video mate, I have santa ana couch that is being invaded by Kikuyu (about 40% worth) do you have a recommendation for my lawn specifically? Or because i have lost alot of it to the kikuyu, (my lawn is cut in half by a path through the middle of it) would it be worth going ahead with this stuff, then doing a reseed when i do my spring renovation (2nd time doing it properly)
@theaussielawn2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, unfortunately you can’t purchase Santa Anna seed as it like most improved varieties of couch grass is in fact sterile . It’s a tough one u have there . Perhaps tribute by Bayer may help in your situation. But just check the label first .

Nice video. I have some buffalo grass I need to get out of Santa Ana, was thinking of doing the same. Do you think the couch would've faired better if you'd left this until a bit further into winter when the grass would be more dormant?
@theaussielawn4 жыл бұрын
Yes it would have faired much better . Just note that Santa Ana couch will not tolerate this sort of approach. Best advice I can give you is find a product that says not suitable for buffalo turf and apply that. From memory Kamba m (broad leaf weed control ) herbicide states not for use on buffalo however it’s safe for couch grass and will control bindi clover and broadleaf weeds
@Crocxr84 жыл бұрын
@@theaussielawn Thanks mate, good to know. Coincidentally, I actually just sprayed some Yates Bindii and Clover weedkiller earlier today to see if I can get rid of some Clover and Oxalis. It's Diacama and MCPA based, so hopefully it'll give the buffalo a knock too. If that doesnt work, I might still try some glyphosate later in winter, fortunately the buffalo is reasonably well separated, so I can be pretty selective.

Unfortunately as far as I’m aware there is no selective herbicide for that situation. If u only have small sections. Get some glyphosate and a little paint brush and target the kikuyu runners . Larger area you might have to spray the section out with glyphosate and replant some buffalo runners there. But wait till spring for that

@theaussielawn4 жыл бұрын
The short answer is no, the long answer is potentially, the plant would need to be subjected to low doses of glyphosate over a period of time for it to start building some kind of resistance. I would suggest something like Kamba M is a good choice for control of the khaki weed in your couch lawn. Its a shocker the only thing i can think of that's worse are cat heads.

Nice experiment, never thought of trying it this time of the year. Could you do a follow up vid in a month? Only asking as we use it on the course roughs in July at 1/4 rate and whilst it browns everything off the greenleas park bounces back and so does they kyke. Completely nails wintergrass. Actually any drift onto the greenleas fairways doesn't affect them as the wintergrass is so thick is shields the couch from the spray. But yeah, just keen to see if any of the targets green up. It definitely cleans things out. Greenleas is tough as nails but I may have accidentally found its enemy this year. Task force herbicide
