Do you know if the stub axle requires a retaining clip or not I can’t tell if his had one? Balmy stub axle keep falling out?
@ButcherNumber1
@ButcherNumber1 Ай бұрын
Yes there’s a retaining clip on there, as long as the groove isn’t buggerd on the end of the shaft stick a new snap ring on there and slap the shaft back into place. Those clips I keep in my tool box attained them from a local GM dealer, those clips alotta parts stores in this neck of the woods don’t keep on hand. So I keep them on hand In case I need one when working on these GM differentials. Just make sure that clip isn’t wedged somewhere back in that gear groove when installing new clip on shaft.

@@ButcherNumber1well crap I just watched another video and that guy put his in with no clip on it either and I don’t remember it having a clip when I yanked it out. I put a clip on it but then it wouldn’t go in all the way. Is the retaining clip staying in the diff and just being reused?
@ButcherNumber1
@ButcherNumber1 Ай бұрын
Sometimes those clips come out on the shaft and sometimes stay in the gear, if you can shine down in there and see a partial clip back in there, and it’s the old clip and yer shaft keeps falling out, dig that ole damn clip outta there and install a new clip on the axle and shove it into place, that old clip back in the gear is prolly shot to begin with! Hope this helps!

First Class video - part 1 & 2 ! Very practical and your small side stories balance out the whole project as if we were in your shop with you and helping! I like the fact that you've included the numbers for things like spindle preload direct vs with oil seal. Am half-way thru my partial re-build of same diff - oil seals, needle roller bearings, snap rings, thrust washer but not main bearings or races. Thanks to you I feel totally confident now! Keep making videos!

you are the only one posting rebuilds of obscure stuff like this. No one has rebuilds of the front 7.2IFS diffs on YT. hopefully the front diff in my 2010 GMC savana AWD isn't too much different.

I recently grenaded my front diff on my 98 suburban (3.42 gears). I'm in NY..... no used diff in my state. Ordered a used diff from Texas. I sure hope I haven't bought a boat anchor. I heard crunching from the front end and my diff had no fluid in it. Let's all cross our fingers and hope I haven't wasted alot of money... GREAT video... thank you for your time... and you did an appropriate amount of talking... lol

Carl that was a great series. Thanks so much for the help. I've got some issues with my 2008 Avalanche that I'm going to have to address, and this will really help me know better what I'm getting into. Hopefully I don't have to do all of this but this was good stuff to know. Your not too quiet, and the fast forwards are right on time. Thanks Again.

So Carl, I just finished up my Differential. Following your directions and using loaner tools from the Adv auto, I managed to do this. It went exactly as you made it seem it would. The crush sleeve was a ball buster and laying hands on an inch lb Torque wrench was an odyssey but in the end, you gave me the knowledge to do this. Thank you sir!

Fantastic video. Mine is different as its a 2003 GMC Savana 1500 AWD, but enough was the same for me to get a firm idea of how to proceed and get mine done. Unfortunately GMC has discontinued the diff used on mine....so I had to just look up all the bearings and seals. Apparently they want you to just buy the whole new front diff rather than rebuild. I just took mine apart following your video and recorded all the seal and bearing numbers as I went then ordered them as I could find no rebuild kit. Thanks for the great video.

Nice work. I was surprised no sealer on the yoke splines or oil on the seals. I even put a thin film of Permatex #2 on the OD of the seals, but most of them these days have either rubber overmolded onto the OD or a factory applied dry sealer. Maybe I'm too fussy on those, but I hate the thought of rubber on metal without oil, and the outside chance of seepage thru the yoke center. I do see a lot of the newer stuff has an o-ring on the pinion splines or s seal in the washer.. I've got a Tahoe with 220k on it and the DS flange feels like it's got a bad bearing, along with a little noise, so it looks like your video will be helpful. Thanks!

Thanks for excellent vid. I've got a situation developing and of all the diff repair videos yours has the best info. I'm HD by trade but been dissabeled last 3 years. Really miss having the shop with all the tooling and parts washer etc. Everything you've done is just the way it would be done at our shop so even though I'm familiar with the procedure I like to see it done just in case there is a different/better way to do it. And we don't work on much light stuff. PS I like that KUKKO puller setup.

It seems to be common practice to do the final adjustment of the ring gear backlash before the RTV is applied between the two case halves. Since the threaded adjusters are mounted in each of the two halves, doesn't the thickness of the RTV affect the backlash? Wouldn't it be appropriate to remeasure backlash after the case is installed with the RTV, then do a final adjustment of the threaded adjusters, then finally install the seals and stub shafts? I'm asking this in good faith, I don't have any special expertise....

so, this applies to the GM 7.2 IFS front end that is in the savana/express AWD vans, but the difference is that the bearing preload is much larger, and there is no inspection window, so you need to paint the gear marking compound, snap the case together, spin it a few times(not from the pinion nut), and then take it apart and inspect. Also, the case for the vans seems to lack any sort of gasket or sealant, and in checking with GM, it is a machined seal, so it is important to use extremely little of your choice of gasket maker(you need some, not much), and then torque the bolts in a crossing pattern down to GMs spec. I wrecked my 7.2ifs front end in my savana by not torquing the pinion nut and setting the bearing preload and crush ring down correctly.

@@Broncocarl92 I'd like to ask you a question about the left front stub axle. I had noticed mine had some wobble, but no leaks. Couldn't get it pulled, so took the diff apart, drove it from the inside. Replaced needle bearings, both sides, inspected the large inner bearings and races, all looked good. Reassembled, reinstalled, on a lark, took my bar, to check left stub axle shaft, same amount of wobble! I'm a bit confused now.

@JMun-pu7mk

I would call it radial play. With everything connected, when I take a bar and place it under the half axle inboard plate that bolts to the stub shaft, it will rock up and down. The outer needle bearing that I replaced did show some wear on the ends of the roller.

Awesome job doing a walk through. I actually just stubbled into your page so ill be looking at alot of videos. I do appreciate what your doing and like any good teacher i have one thing to criticize. Its great when things go back together perfect. You hit the spec every way. Life is good, bird chirp, rabbits are humping. So when you put the indicator marker to see how well the gears meshed. It was bang on. So what if it is NOT? Where is the adjustment or retorque or whats next. Other then that great job. Awesome, and you did mention that you dont talk enough, but thats being camera shy. Actually at the beginning of part 1 how your calling it shit, and crap is why i started watching. There's ussually more swearing in the shop lol

Tahoe Rebuild Thanks for the comments... The nice thing about rebuilds is the fact the bearings are built to tight standards so when we are replacing them only, the adjustments are usually bang on. If I replaced the r&p or the carrier I probably would not have been so lucky. In that case we would have to rotate the adjusters to move the ring closer or further away to the pinion, or add/remove shims to the pinion. I have a DANA 60 that I have to do for someone as soon as the weather warms up so maybe you will get to see some adjustment on that one.. As far as the talking thing maybe not so camera shy, I just tend to get into my work. I like to have music going but that is a no no for KZbin. Thanks for watching and the sub!
