Giri is a Hindu upadhi used by a certain religious tradition/community that extends from India to Nepal. Most of our brahmachari sadhus and pujaris in northern India also have Giri as their adopted title. Almost certain that India has more people with that lastname than Nepal. It is not like other castes typical to the Nepali sub-ethnicity (whether Indian or Nepalese by nationality) like Chhetri (variation of Indian Khatri/Kshatriya aka martial caste) or Gorkha (cow-protecting martial followers of baba Gorakhnath's shaiva panth which hails from northern Bihar, related to the Nath community of India). We are the same ancient people with regional variations.

I love Nepal and Nepali people. One Nepali family (the Shrestas), in the US were very kind to me when I arrived as the most innocent 21-year old. Life long respect for them (Nepalis). He was a Fulbright scholar with two PhDs - Physics and Nuclear Engineering. Amish is a nice ambassador for the nice Nepali culture. I appreciate him very much.

Anish Giri was born on June 28, 1994, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His father is Nepalese, and his mother is Russian. Although born in Russia, Anish moved to the Netherlands in 2008, where he later gained Dutch citizenship. He now represents the Netherlands in international chess tournaments. Anish Giri's father's name is Sanjay Giri. He is originally from Nepal and worked as a researcher in Russia when Anish was born. Anish Giri's mother's name is Olga Giri. She is of Russian descent.
