Interesting question, I think Kasparov was asked this and his reply was essentially idk. To me it looks like they use their thumb and middle finger to move the pieces, therefore the middle finger is the finger they associate most with the board, this might sound far fetched but we have to consider that these men live and breathe chess and spend a large part of their lives behind the boards. There’s also the fact that sometimes when they’re analyzing they’re moving pieces around and like I said, the middle finger is more dominant when moving a chess piece, so if they were to move a piece and then point to a specific part of the board, they’d have to move the pointer finger but the middle finger is already in that natural “pointing position” if that makes sense
