You play 1. e4 and hit the clock. Your opponent looks at the board then back up at you- he’s got something up his sleeve: 1…Nc6. Do you dare play 2. d4 and enter the theory of the Nimzovich? Black should play 2.d6 after 2.nf3 an play it like a nimzo pirc where black plays for e5 after setting the pirc formation and castle. Nc6 is a modest commitment compared to white blocking his f pawn with nf3. If not he can try 2.e6 3.d5 playing for early f6 if e5 or otherwise transposing to the rozentalis variation of the french. He often goes for f6 bd7 qe7 o-o-o qf7 All the other lines as discussed in the video are different degrees of dubious

Honestly this made me want to play it as black. Imagine a defense where your best option is avoiding it altogether. That doesnt take away that that isnt a sound strategy (a lot of openings would be bigger names if they werent so easily avoided)

If they push d5 you put the knight back on b8! and reroute.The Mikenas type defense d6 g6 structure is also fine for black. Never mind what engines or grandmasters say, play to your ranking and enjoy!
