Asked at the dealership for information about an issue I was having and they said it's a good possibility that it's the HPFP that was going bad, and may need replacing. Well, so they want almost $200 just to "diagnose" the issue. I typically prefer to do as much work on my vehicles as possible, but after speaking to them it seemed like that would not be possible in this case. After watching your video, I'm more confident that I'd be able to get this done myself and not have to deal with them. Thank you for the informative video. Keep up the great work. Great video! Just did the HPFP in my wife’s Yukon. Having the 90 impact ratchet makes a world of difference. Also, the install plug is great, I didn’t buy it, you can look down in #1 intake port and see the intake valve, and turn the motor til you get to valve overlap, then you know you’re TDC on exhaust stroke.

hey Aaron, I have a 2017 GMC 1500 6.2 and my truck constantly goes into limp mode when it rains. Then the other day it is now permanently in limp mode. Im down in the Yucatan Peninsula and there isnt much help, so its basically a do it yourself scenario. We found that the High Pressure pump was bad, so we changed it out, really not knowing what we were doing, and the guys did not put the number 1 piston on TDC. Im having them remove it, and placing piston 1 on TDC as you suggest since we do not have the guid tool available. We only ran the motor for several minutes, we are getting 80psi on the low pressure side and only about 85 on the High pressure side. So Im assuming it might be the incorrect installation? I was reading that the plunger can get damaged over time do to lack of oil changes, I bought this truck used, so who knows, but do you know if we can change out the CAM plunger if it ends up that it was damaged? I still need to figure out why it goes into limp mode when it rains...thats like trying to pin down the location of a bad smell..lol Hoping you might be able to help! Cheers.

Great video aaron! I like the detail you went into,should this fuel pump be changed when you hit 150k to avoid gasoline ending up in the crankcase?
@lichking37112 жыл бұрын
imo no, just look out for stumbling as it starts to lose pressure and check your oil periodically. Gasoline contamination will give it a different smell and yes, it will be overfilled even if you filled it correctly last service. Oil doesn't magically appear so unless someone added oil for some reason, an overfilled engine will mean gasoline dilution. Don't delay the repair either, oil mixed with gas will not provide enough lubrication and the wear on the crank, rods, cam will be accelerated.

Yikes that little 6710 is expensive. Can't I just use a dial gauge and stand to figure out when the cam lobe is located at the base circle (= lowest point)? Do I also need to figure out if the #1 piston is at TDC/exhaust stroke, or is the cam lobe being at the base circle position sufficient?
@lichking37112 жыл бұрын
cam lobe's position should be enough but cyl 1 tdc is the sure way. As I understand, it's just so there is no extreme spring pressure preventing the pump from seating properly - it has a machined surface and a metal gasket after all.
@jthemixer Жыл бұрын
I just did this job. (2hrs) I removed the #1 spark plug, then I set the old fuel pump in place. Turned the crank until the #1 piston came to TDC and watched the fuel pump drop to its lowest point. Hello Aaron, I have a 2012 Sierra 6.2l that just starting to have trouble starting. It will start up after a hard start and starts normal after I run it. My research says its the fuel pressure regulator. I cant find this part but did see that the regulator could be part of the fuel pump??? Do you know if this is true? Thank you

Hey. Chris lujan. I have 6.2 as well it having a hard time starting takes a couple of tries to turn on. After I turn it on no issues. I’m either thinking it’s running out of fuel or bad. Fuel pump
@lichking37112 жыл бұрын
on this generation of SBC the high pressure fuel pump has a regulator integrated into it, it's the little cylinder with a 2 or 3 wire plug to it. Controls the fuel rail pressure and it can also go bad but I would do it as a unit - regulator and pump. Not sure if the regulator would even be listed separately.

How would I tell if my piston is all the way up
@michaelbrady42083 жыл бұрын
Here’s an old school way. With the intake off, pull #1 spark plug, put a screw driver in the spark plug hole, then turn the motor off the crank bolt til you feel the piston hit the screwdriver and push it up. You’ll hear air being pushed out of the hole if you’re on the compression stroke. If the piston is going up and you hear no air being pushed out, then you’re on exhaust stroke.
@michaelbrady42083 жыл бұрын
Then look down in the intake port, you can see the valve from behind its seat, slowly turn the motor until you see the intake valve BARELY crack open or move, when it BARELY moves, you’re at “valve overlap” when both intake and exhaust valves are both barely opened, and that’s TDC.
@michaelbrady42083 жыл бұрын
Also, if you can’t hear air escaping, plug the spark plug hole with your finger and slowly turn the motor by hand, you’ll feel pressure against your finger if it’s on the compression stroke, then you know you need to come all the way up and then back down, then next time going Up you’ll be on the exhaust stroke.

Great write-up. How was your HPFP packaged when you received it? Reason I'm asking, I purchased a "new" hpfp and when it arrived the packaged appeared to have been opened and taped. The pump was in a clear bag with a zip tie and then wrapped in brown paper and bubble wrap inside the AC Delco box. The pump look overall new however the bolts are questionable and I could tell there was some fluid coming out of the fitting ends. Wasn't sure if they prime them or test when made. I may return and get via the link you provided but was just curious on those question.
