This was exactly what I needed to see. Problem solved with some jiggling and a bit of penetrant. Thank you sir.

Wow! I've had my '85 K10 for 26 years now, and the tailgate had never worked except when I bought it from the previous owner. And even that day I bought it, the tailgate was acting up. I usually would have to drive with the tailgate down because it the pressure of the wind driving it would bring it crashing down, scaring the daylights out of me. I looked at it today after watching the video, sprayed PB Blaster and banged with a hammer and screw driver to actuate the mechanism over about twenty times and all of a sudden it worked! I couldn't be happier!

I'm glad it helped! If it gets bound up again, you can take the latch out and drill out that rivet and put a bolt and nut in its place, with red locktite or a locking nut.

l kept a pair of channel Lock pliers in the back of my truck for 5 years to open the tailgate. I watched your KZbin video, walked outside to my shop, Picked up a can of PB Blaster as suggested, ... removed the rubber Tailgate Iatch- cover, shot the lube Juice, and viola!! Five year pain in the posterior vanished in a heart beat! Thanks A MILLION!!! 1998 3/4 ton Silverado .... Got her when she was a new Born!

I'm glad that helped. Shoot the PB to it every few months and it should keep working correctly. :)

I’ve watched a lot of auto fix it videos on KZbin, this by far was the best one. Fixed my tailgate in under 5 minutes. Been riding around with it down. Awesome thanks. PS gonna have that beer too lol

@@FuelTankerMan what are you spraying on it? cheers! also do you think this will work on a 2005 gmc ? that same problem still exist even in the 2000's .
@FuelTankerMan Жыл бұрын
@@Cream_CurdlR PB Blaster is the oil, but Liquid Wrench or WD-40 would probably do fine. This may work on your 2005, yes.

Thank you. I just picked up a 1997 z71 for dirt cheap that the tailgate doesn't latch on. I will try this tonight after work.

Was about to say the same thing -- love my '95 but the one sided latch issue been driving me nuts and something told me it's probably a mild adjustment to one side, or something simple like this vs removing all the rods / replacing everything etc etc .

I drilled mine out and put a nut and double jammed the nut and it works perfect.

Excellent idea, I ended up doing the same thing when mine corroded again and got stuck. I used some red loctite on a slightly loose bolt and nut. Just posted that video as an update...

Good job. I have a problem where the gate won’t open cause the shaft that goes in and out on the left and right side don’t open all the way when pulling latch

What spray did you use? May I ask because I have the same issue and no one wants to help me
@FuelTankerMan4 ай бұрын
I used PB Blaster, but you could probably do it with WD-40 or Liquid Wrench or anything that can penetrate the rust. Just keep working it back and forth and it'll loosen up. You can also remove the latch, drill out that rivet, and put a bolt and nut on there which will allow more space between the latch halves, so that even if it does rust it'll still move freely. Good luck! :)

If I pinch the latch together and still won’t open should I just get the whole kit?
@FuelTankerMan3 жыл бұрын
If you pinch the latch together, unless the rods have disconnected from the latch, it should open. Be sure that both rods are being retracted... the problem addressed in this video is for the tailgate not latching; if yours is stuck shut, either 1 or both of the rods are popped loose from that latch.
