Years ago there was a poor guy at an intersection in a pick up with his hood up and I stopped to see if he needed help. He told me it wouldn't start and he just needed a boost. I turned on his headlamps and they were super bright, then I took a quick look underneath the truck and there was oil and parts of a connecting rod on the ground. "A boost ain't gonna fix this." He was mad I wouldn't boost it even after I tried to show him the "not supposed to be on the outside" part of his engine.

Holy crap!! The older LS engine's lower ends could take 1,300-1,400 boosted HP before con-rods bent, so it looks like the newer generation of engines aren't as stout. Can't say I'm surprised there. The GM cheapout continues! That said, you can't go changing ANYTHING that affects power output once you've had a dyno tune. All that affects fuel mixture, big time. I wonder if the piston failed first from detonation? The hole in the block tells me the rod catastrophically failed. Either weaker rods, or maybe lack of oiling due to the super high RPM he was at - he could've cavitated the oil pump. We may never know! Great vid, Ivan! Catastrophic failures are always fun to look at when you don't own them, LOL! 😁👍😎

My 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine in my Holden VY SS Commodore had more power after I picked it up after a registration inspection in December 2019. I had replaced the headers with 1 5/8" primary Diameter Genie tri y headers,2 × 200 cell per inch 2.5 inch catalytic converters & a twin 2.5 inch high flow cat back exhaust system. They secretly snuck it on the car dyno without me knowing,it was a girl who I went to school with who drove it to the dyno tuner. It put out 235 flywheel kilowatts from the Holden factory but it had custom made headers & a twin 2.25" exhaust system & it made about as much power as the 6 litre (L76) powered Holden VZ series 2 & VE series 1 SS Commodores did in 2005-2006 (276 flywheel kilowatts). With the standard 5.7 litre LS1 V8 engine. Now it makes about 300 kilowatts at the flywheel,I had it up to 200 km/h (120 mph) & it started pulling past that Speed as well,it g it there pretty quick as well. Back in 2002 when it was made Holdens special vehicles division also did similar exhaust & tuning mods albeit performed a MAFless tune to remove the restriction from the inlet manifold to get a 285 flywheel kilowatt power output,the compression ratio was also reduced from 10:1 to 9.98:1 in the Holden VY SS Commodore Clubsport R8 back then. It was tuned to run on 95 octane premium unleaded fuel & mine is tuned to run on 94 octane E10 unleaded fuel. In the 6 litre L76 V8 powered cars a larger diameter Corvette MAF sensor was used instead of having a MAFless tune done !

That warranty is only good for one use. Northstar engine in a Cadi I swapped, it was literally only 1 month old, had catastrophic internal failure, bad bearings. After lots of back-n-forth, they finally sent another engine, again,BUT, as soon as the shop signed for it, the warranty ended. Even w theoretically 11 months left, no more warranty. I'd almost rather buy a good used engine, replace any warn parts and install it!

I'm thinking GM may have cheaped out on these newer generation engines. Wouldn't shock me - it's a trend that's been happening over 20 model years now with every component. Every year they get worse and worse. The older LS lower ends could take 1,300-1,400 HP before the con rods would bend. Even then, they'd BEND, not shatter into 5 pieces. These were junkyard engines, too! Some already had 200k miles on them! Plenty of KZbin vids out there of a few guys doing this.

My guess is that it wasn't ONLY the tune and it possibility being a little on the lean side. If that were the case, he may have overheated the piston, seized the rings and scored the cylinders. Maybe even burned a hole in a piston because of detonation. My guess is he was playing in the snow, spinning well over the limit and probably hit dry pavement shocking the engine and drive train a few times. Do that a few times and then just that one more time of 9000rpms and she gives up the ghost! It is quite evident that this guy was totally oblivious to the fact that his engine was coming apart while he was doing whatever he was doing. It was broke and he was still "Giving her the beans"! Let's see how long it is before he comes back to have you check out his transmission....?

The Gen 3 LS engines had problems with the valley mounted knock sensors detecting sudden damaging detonation on the rear 2 cylinders when the rear steam vents ports were plugged (ie blocked off from the factory). Using a junkyard 2 port vent tube with a brass 1/4" tee and proper 1/4" coolant hose will fix the problem. Probably not a bad idea to do the same on a Gen 4 as well.

These ls engines are capable of well over a 1000HP on stock bottom end. Which this kid couldn't have made without a turbo or NOS. Definitely something wrong in the tune,and too high rpm would have caused the valves to float,not break a rod like that. I'm suspecting way too much timing set in the tune.
@billmalec2 жыл бұрын
@@bertvisser6423 I'm sure they are capable of that hp. But for low long?

@@billmalec I personally am helping a drag car with a ls here that is dyno'd at around 950HP to the wheels and he's in his third race season on same engine,hasen't touched it for anything other then oil changed and tweaks. He does about 35 race days a year. This kid only has some small mods,an intake,exhaust and a tune,not even a cam or valve springs(which I would recommend as stock valve springs float little over 6k rpm) so he'd be only pushing maybe 250/280hp to the wheel. With a proper tune it could be his daily driver for many years without exploding.
