Part of the challenge though is that insurance doesn’t cover testing, which means people must pay out of pocket, making it out of reach for many.

Many plans do cover neuropsych testing and members don’t know how to go about it. If you have commercial insurance and you have a provider who can recommend a neuropsychological test to rule out ADHD (has to be medically necessary)- that could be a first step. This is of course IF your plan covers the testing with in network providers. Neuropsychological testing is the gold standard for ADHD testing. It can also rule out autism, learning disabilities etc However, If your plan doesn’t cover neuropsych testing- you can search for an in network therapist (psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, licensed mental heath counselor etc) who specializes in treating ADHD- everyone mentioned above can diagnose and treat it if they’re trained to but only psychologist can do psychological testing. You can still get help without the formal testing if you find a provider who specializes in ADHD. I hope this helps!

For those in this position I recommend Klarity. I was broke when I paid for the consult but I'm glad I did because I finally got diagnosed and got medication that has transformed my life. I know it's more expensive than finding a doctor through insurance and I'm fortunate I had the money but I do recommend it for people who are in a position where they do have to pay out of pocket because it's cheaper than the other options I found and I didn't feel there was any misogynistic or anti-black bias from the physician which is unlike what I encountered when I went to a psychiatrist and tried to get help but I was dismissed with an overtly racialized stereotype about me "sitting around smoking weed all day" (????) when I was describing symptoms that started in early childhood.

This is helpful to see so many relatable stories in the comments. I was diagnosed at 38, about 2 weeks after being laid off from a Fortune 5 engineering job and a second opinion 6 months later confirmed the diagnosis. The thing is, I just thought everyone struggled as hard as I did with these things. I feel like growing up, as long as you did okay in school, nobody cared about obvious symptoms that there was a problem even if that problem caused obvious distress. So teachers and parents noticed that I was a great test-taker, which was enough to keep my grades ok and even test me into Gifted and Talented programs across multiple states, but they ignored how terrible I was with procrastination, deadlines, or paying attention in class instead of doodling in notebooks. Even my second opinion was rough because I was told by a psychiatrist that they didn't really want to diagnose me with ADHD, because I wasn't on medication for it or being treated for it as a kid. In other words, because I wasn't the hyperactive, disruptive kid in class back then, it's hard to find a provider even now that cares even when you fit all of the criteria otherwise.

Hear me….if there are so many being diagnosed, could it be that humans have different styles of functioning but then the world is set up one way that is a standard for all to fit, hence those who are wired differently struggle to adhere to what is set as normal but it just means their normal is different? How about instead to making this a disorder…we recognise that there are different types of normal and use the test to find which normal a person best fits in instead of pathologising their behaviour? It’s like saying a left handed person has a disorder just because the world is mainly set up to accommodate right handed people better.

They are imploding their relationships and have no idea why. That’s not normal. There are many natural solutions that can help most people reclaim their lives. Others will need to depend on medication. Check out Dr. Daniel Amen. And don’t forget that we live in a chemical “soup”. It is an uncontrolled experiment on our planet and every living thing. Processed foods. Pesticides. Plastic particles throughout our bodies. Most chemicals haven’t been studied for their effects on living things. Then add various forms of trauma.

They did- boys are typically diagnosed as children because they are more hyper and their impulsivity shows up in physical ways that are hard to ignore. For women- we tend to be less hyper and impulsive physically. It shows up as impulsive speech, excessive talking/oversharing, and more subtle physical movements like always bouncing a foot or twirling hair. Both sexes can be quick to anger, be disorganized etc. Girls/Women may make more effort to mask those things because it is even less socially appropriate for us and more accepted for men.

These strategies and diet change are helping as did the iron infusion but its the effort and time to apply these strategies consistently that is hard. 1 day sure but to maintain a certain level of standard is still challenging but breaking apart tasks with due rewards in between does seem to trick my brain. The hardest is the motivation and sustaining it without giving up completely. Multiple misdiagnosis and the only thing that made 100 percent accuracy of all my issues was this diagnosis. Too many things add up.

I’m a bit skeptical the rise jumped in 2020-2022, of course it did, women had to teach school and work and everything else, I wonder if some of these “cases” are just we live demanding lives and add social media to that….if some people feel helped by this great but I doubt all diagnoses of this are actually that versus a need to change our society demands for women
@kikijewell296712 күн бұрын
I believe the diagnosis changed, but not the number of women with ADHD - so my conclusions are the opposite of yours. Undiagnosed women with ADHD have been coping but more stressed than women without ADHD. The pandemic put these stressed-but-coping women over the line. For these women (me included) getting help for the first time was an eye opener. Instead of blaming themselves for being "lazy" and struggling to push through, they now have help to make those tasks effortless. Life would have been easier had these women been diagnosed as children.

I completely agree that our lives are way too demanding. But unfortunately, the demands aren't going to change any time soon. I had to take my ADHD dx kicking and screaming. But I'm tired of being left behind because the demands are so high and I can't keep up.

I think most of the people getting diagnosed have had it for a long time but the systems that they had and the coping skills that they had no longer worked once the pandemic hit and things changed so drastically and it is incredibly hard to get back. Add in the fact that some research shows that perimenopause increases ADHD symptoms and you end up with a lot more women hitting a wall where they can’t cope anymore. For me, I was diagnosed seven years ago so prior to the pandemic, but everything has gotten much much worse since the pandemic for me. And I don’t even have kids or husband.

Change diet and exercise before fully dependent on drugs. Drugs have many side effects. Listen/read Uma Naidoo, MD book on brain and diet. It's been a life changer for me. STOP eating processed food and sugar.

The only reason women are not diagnosed is because of our earlier prefrontal cortex development in relation to adhd boys. We need to stop thinking of XX people as lesser XY When in fact we should be studying all meds and medical models on XX because of thr complexity of genetics and hormones.

I’m tired of hearing doctors over diagnosing woman simply because the woman body has so many complexities, and we go through many changes physically and hormonally over the years. I’ve recently been reading a lot about other mental health disorders and women are always more likely to be over-diagnosed and men are more likely to be undiagnosed. I understand that putting a label on everything makes things feel like they make sense. But I also think it’s important for mental health, professionals to start encouraging people to take care of themselves mentally physically, and to put themselves first in this high-pressure , tech heavy world.

We aren’t being overdiagnosed. We were underdiagnosed over the past 30 to 40 years and are now getting appropriately diagnosed.

Where does social media effecting attention span, concentration and multitasking being a MUST in the workfield. There are too many factors to reduce it to a rising diagnosis. Did this problem exist b4 the pandemic? 😮💨 Trust doctors...they have a pill for everything but logic.

Considering that to get diagnosed as an adult, the symptoms need to have been present in childhood no the symptoms that have existed in me since the 1980s are not because of the phone.

Women hide it more than men so the diagnosis is missed in children. I struggled with my studies a lot in my childhood.

I am a woman. I got diagnosed at age 3-4. Only because we had a new pediatric care center nearby with a focus on neurology, and only because my older brother got diagnosed, which caused my parents to have a closer look at me. My ENTIRE childhood i was told how overdiagnosed it was and that it's not real. But. I was the only girl I knew that had it. Boys? Yes. At least one in every class. But girls? It was like i wasnt meant to exist. My symptoms werent the same, i was a people pleaser and had good grades. But god did i struggle. Never knew WHAT exactly adhd is, besides that it was supposed to make me do bad at school. What they didnt tell me: that all my accidents and ER trips were symptoms, that my unusual hyperfixations and social awkwardness were symptoms, that my inability to write within the lines despite having learnt how to write super quickly was a symptom. Only now, in my mid to late twenties do i meet other women who have it, and none of them were diagnosed as children. I was so freaking lonely as a child.
