That’s my thought on this as well. They typically hand them a diploma cover at the ceremony and give the diploma separately. The ceremony is just a costume party. To recieve a diploma you are REQUIRED to complete "x" amount of credits over a 4 year stint. Also depending on the school system a certain GPA. In no code of conduct anywhere it says a student will not receive their diploma at graduation for any reason at graduation ceremony. Atleast in Florida and NY school systems. @@enrgy-xh5uq I have had a few days to reflect on this issue. I agree that policy exists for a reason. With such a policy I believe there should also be training on how to handle situations. I don't believe it should matter what flag represents his culture or background. I believe that there is an appropriate way to ask a student to remove their flag by not putting a student on the spotlight in front of his family and school. They should have just been a little more sensitive. The school failed to address it appropriately by not pulling him to the side and asking him without putting him on the spotlight. At that point the ball would be in the students hands to not make a scene by disrespecting or getting loud towards staff. I believe that if he was allowed to sit and walk up to the stage then he should have been allowed to walk all the way through because they failed to provide him an opportunity to remove it without embarrassing him. I empathize with the student because I could feel how humiliated I would be if I didnt get addressed in private about such a big issue. I do not believe this warrants an apology to the school as the school also has fault by not providing him a safe and appropriate setting to remove it. Pulling people aside is important.

The diploma doesn't even really mean anything other than symbology. It's a physical object representing your graduation but the official record is held by the state. Oddly, It's really similar to the flag he wore. For example, if the flag he was wearing was confiscated it doesn't mean the country was some how taken away. It would be the same with the diploma. It makes no sense to hold either symbol hostage.

The graduates were told BEFORE ever showing up for the ceremony, there was no reason for the adults who explained what was allowed to confront him before going onstage. He chose to buck against the system and the system gave him the punishment he was due. When told that graduates could distinguish themselves on their caps but all graduates were to wear the traditional gown without embellishments and someone decides to ignore those rules because they are "special" and rules dont apply to them the administration is required to not allow them the same experience as all the other students who have followed those rules. Now for a hmmm moment, what would have happened if the student was denied their diploma because they were wearing an American flag over the gown. I really believe almost everyone declaring him a victim for his own actions would have a completely different opinion if he had worn an American flag.

I show pride in my heritage by conducting myself as a rule following, law abiding, productive citizen of my community setting the example for others to emulate. You live in the greatest country in the world the United States of America. You are American first and whatever your nationality may be second and if you think otherwise you are part of which is causing this country to be experiencing the devisions that it is. It was about the dress code and he broke it. He wanted attention for being a Mexican, who graduated from an American school, and wanted everyone to know it. Meanwhile, there's probably 10 - 30 other immigrants, or more, who's parents came from another country being respectful and wearing the right dress attire. As for the diploma, they hand out fake diplomas at the ceremony while the real ones get mailed out. This saves the school time from having to sort through several hundred students and if they mess up the order, then all the diplomas gets messed up. Hence the fake blank piece of paper that gets handed out.

Look at our country, you’re telling me there’s any type of that “class-school unity” being carried on past high school? It’s making something out of nothing lol, just let the kid celebrate. While I agree there’s a time and a place, the kid isn’t being disrespectful or acting out on stage or having family members blow air horns, causing the ceremony to take longer or something. He wore a flag to take pride in his culture and represent that that was a part of what got him there. Of course, because they are penalized for failing people. Its easier to just... pass someone. Failing upwards is a thing in this country that started out in the 90s with the "Everyone gets a trophy" and "no child left behind" crap. You fail, you get passed to the next grade anyway because the school gets fined tons of money if they dont. Of course, its not everywhere that does that... but you do get that a lot in places where the failure rate is EXTREMELY high. Which... is mostly in impoverished/colored areas.

It’s a flag at the end of the day and doesn’t “offend” anyone who isn’t prejudiced (yes I went there), doesn’t “offend” anyone who is secure with themselves and what their doing in their own lives. Certain people in this country need to mind their business and stop trying to control what people of color want to represent for theirselves and their own racial group. That young man was not hurting anyone by wearing the flag on his back. Ridiculousness and plenty of bigotry going on in this country and THAT is what people should be outraged about.
