I cannot express enough how much this community and these people will need help for YEARS after this. I live here and volunteers, donations and monitory donations have already slowed down. Much of Asheville and the surroundings still don’t have water - it’s been 16 days. Please, please, please, keep the help coming. We are not even close to finishing everything that needs to be done.

@Myatalanta-l4x honestly, anything helps! We need everything that's essential. Food (particularly dry food because some are still without power, so no refrigeration), and water is a very big need because most still don't have running water, for those that do it's not drinkable. We also need clothes and children's toys for people who lost everything during the flood.

Take an emergency preparedness course to get ready in case of an earthquake which is more likely to be the disaster we would face if there is to be one (I live on Vancouver Island). You need to have enough to live on for a week not three days like most guides say. It takes three days for the Red Cross to deploy. Depending on your needs you may not be attended to right away post event.

The "home movies", smart phone, and youtube vidoes have been incredible. (It's looky loo heaven.). I don't think there has ever been a more terrible disaster that's been covered better. It creates a compelling story. I don't have that fresh being there viewpoint of how bad it is, but the coverage has been incredible. With great swathes of real roadway gone forever, many houses just floating down stream like house boats dashing themselves to pieces on trees, power poles and other houses and most and many bridges gone. Where the heck are they going to rebuild roadways where the ground is all missing? It looks bad. We are as aware as an outsider can be. Lots of newly homeless folks, mud and wetness. So widespread. And it's fall with cold weather coming.

What’s really crazy is how a hurricane that hit land 900 miles away got stronger in the Appalachian mountains. I think the clouds were seeded. That’s the only explanation.
@victoriabaker44003 ай бұрын
@@dianakidd4219 Nope, that's NOT what happened and it's a lame conspiracy theory with no basis in fact. They'd already had 3 days of torrential rain before the hurricane got there. NOBODY is seeding clouds if it's already raining. And NOBODY creates hurricanes on purpose because NOBODY wants to pay for all the disaster rebuilding and NOBODY wants to make people suffer except trump, apparently. And even if SOMEBODY wanted to make a hurricane happen, it is not physically possible. Try believing a fact.

Dont forget the plastics factory workers ordered to keep working until the water ripped through. Dont forget the first Helene related infant death due to hypothermia in Moorseville, NC. And listen to the comp,lints folks on the ground are having with some of the Federal response; remember so that when/ if it comes ip for remedial policy changes, procedures and action you can at least talk aboit it at the grass roots level or give your representatives a call; some of the Helene affected and other states may be reviewing thier disaster response plans too.
@victoriabaker44003 ай бұрын
The Republican governors of the states involved are commending FEMA and the administration. There's never going to be a sudden unexpected major catastrophe in which relief is instantly there. It takes a second. And if people would stop telling lies about disaster relief , there would be a lot fewer people panicking and more people asking for the help available. And yes, as with each unprecedented catastrophe as Climate Change progresses, planning will be adjusted with new information.

We had to climb out a window when the water was waist deep inside the house at 5 am in the dark. Kids dogs and wallets in our arms we waded. My dad parked the cars on a hill just in case. Thank goodness he did. We all climbed in. We dodged water and trees and drove 7-8 miles to my mobile home where it was high and dry. The water ended up 6 feet inside the river house. We got out just in time. Some neighbors had to be rescued. It was surreal.

Given the amount of rain and how high the river already was before Helene. I don't understand why no evacuation orders were given until 7am. I know people think they are find on a hill, but you can't evacuate if the road is underwater (Or in this case washed away). If you see that water coming up towards the road by your house, just get out before its too late.

And this is exactly what I said! I'm in Swannanoa, our whole town is gone. I moved here from Florida 25 years ago at 17, so I knew this storm was going to hit us. I told my husband they really should evacuate our county. At 6:15 am we got the Mandatory Evacuation alert for our area. By then we were surrounded by flood waters. There was nowhere to go. There are 100 ppl in our complex and we're on the 3rd floor. My daughters best friend who lives behind us had to be rescued by boat. Our county officials Absolutely FAILED!! They told ppl minimal flooding and ppl listened. I sent my husband down to our property manager to see if she wanted help stacking sandbags so the lobby wouldn't flood and she along with the maintenance man laughed at him and said "We're not gonna get anything worth worrying about!"
