On long climbs I tend to break it down into manageable chunks mentally. Make it to that tree, get to the next bend, get past that gate etc

i was on a biking holiday climbing mountains in the French Pyrenees, the trip leader was a guy that trained Ghurkas and other Special forces, he used exactly the same method to get us ordinary riders to climb 3000 metre mountains.

Like Isaac I’m the sort of freak who likes climbing… 1/ know your limits, work within them 2/ Use your gears properly, climbing (mostly) should mean no more effort, just going slower in the right gear 3/ make sure your gearing is right for your rides, longer rides and you’ll need a lower lowest gear to keep your bodies efforts within your limits

We all spend much more time climbing than descending .. I’d love to watch “ how to” videos about getting up technical climbs. I followed a skilled climber up one of my local trails and was amazed that she cleaned a section I always walked. I asked her to show me how, and now I always clean it. You folks surely have the skills to help us all improve the thing we do the most.. climbing on a mountain bike. ( disclaimer - If my wheels get more than 6 inches off the ground, something unplanned has happened )

I love climbing! I enjoy the punishment, and like to earn my descent. Mountain biking for me is a hobby that brings me exercise, and that's motivation for the climb!

I guess I'm in it for something different, I like riding out in the middle of nowhere, with no computers, really see the surroundings. Maybe it's better to not know you're about to do a 3 mile climb. The views, the discovery, the mental challenge that you have to find your way back out. Adventure cycling, you're missing a lot if you are just going downhill and worrying about stats all the time.

yeah exactly, this is what i enjoy about sports like mtb, ski touring and hiking. you go in a direction, and you have to get back home. even when you're completely dead, that's where you push your limits and where it becomes interesting

Coming from the road, I've discovered it's good to climb with something in reserve so you can punch over a technical section or up an especially steep pitch. If you're at the limit, those features will stop you dead in your tracks!

Yes it is possible to enjoy climbing, on an ebike. Especially on a good uphill trail that is good fun and has right level of tech. On a normal manual bike I started to find the climbs not too bad when I realised its not worth trying to pedal up everything and started walking more, with better pushing technique as well

It's not the climbing I love it's the challenge it presents to me. I look at a hill and think there's no way I can get up that and then do my best to try and get up that. There have been a few hills I never thought I would conquer but it may have taken years but there are a few I have eventually gotten to the top of. And it's such a good feeling of accomplishment. Gravity helps you go downhill but it certainly doesn't help you go up

Polarising your effort is what you automatically get when you ride a singlespeed bike. You MUST save your energy for the tough climbs, otherwise you will be toast after the first one! Although I don't ride singlespeed too much these days I still ride a bit like it. I think that at the end of the day it teaches you to pace yourself. Oh, and I still love climbing!

I like the challenge of a steep climb, but hate having to walk it. What helps me is to watch the HR to know when to back off or rest. I've also found that doing wheelies off of small obstacles can help with boredom on long fire road climbs. 😄

After 6 years away from mtb and used to race (slowly) and now I'm heavy. But loving the improvement I feel when I ride. So I never liked climbing even at my fittest but for some reason now I like it as I can see improvement. Maybe it's in the mind, as I ride now because I love it not because I have to train.

I consider climbing as mental rest before going downhill. I noticed that even hard and technical climbs are easier when I relax and try to visualize riding a flat trail! Oh, and the rolling up your shorts trick too!

Here's how I make climbing easier. Keep every thing as light weight as possible: bike, gear, clothes, and yourself. Just a few pounds can make a big difference. Use the lightest fastest-rolling tires that you can tolerate. Set up the rear suspension just a little on the firm side to minimize pedal bob. Install a a smaller chainring. I love my granny gear with the 28 tooth chainring on the 52 tooth cog.
@radiocontrolled9181
@radiocontrolled9181 Жыл бұрын
No need to set up my rear suspension on my hardtail. Fast rolling light tires yes, but not forgetting excellent puncture resistance as otherwise you'll be changing or repairing inner tubes more often than you hope. Messy tubeless is not for me. No need to install a smaller chainring, got it already, a 22T. I have 22,34,42 up front and 12-28 cassette at the rear on my 3x7. Works like a dream on steep climbs plus I don't run out of gears on fast sections of paved roads with a tailwind. And my chain line is always reasonably straight 😁
@vadymvv
@vadymvv 6 ай бұрын
@@radiocontrolled9181 3x7 is not suitable for woods, I couldn't change rear and front chainrings fast enough. For slow pace it is normal.

Please make a video swapping frames between Cross-country and Enduro frame while use the parts for Enduro mountain biking. Here in our country, XC frames are typical because we live in a 3rd world country which fewer can afford an Enduro frames. Just something to think about: I've been mtb riding since a teenager. Now, with my age going up, I still love riding, but the climbing is becoming more difficult to my body. So, to continue riding these awesome trails. It may be time for an E-mtb. As I come to my realization, climbing isn't for me anymore.

Pacing yourself is everything - pick a gear at the start of the hill you think you can use to get all the way up, and pick up the pace at the end if you have anything left - starting too fast is mentally and physically a massive mistake

I’ve recently started to enjoy the climbs, always hated them and still do lol. But I’ve started to learn to like them, but only to a certain extent. My asthma/heart rate gives out before anything else does and it frustrates me beyond belief. My legs can climb/ride all day, but once my heart starts to pound and I can’t catch my breath I’ll be bonked for the rest of the day and not be able to ride properly. I’ve gotten better at pacing myself, but I still can’t do too long of climbs

I just started mountain bike riding again after a couple of years. (In the Army and always training or in another country.) I tried climbing some small hills but lost traction on the rear wheel and fell. How do I get more traction? I was already shifting my weight, but the hill had loose gravel and dirt. Not to mention sharp turns on the downhill I lost traction as well, so, there's that as well. Any tips would be appreciated.
