It's not unheard of to spend £10,000/$10,000/€10,000 on an MTB these days. But do you need to spend such astronomical figures? To find out, Neil pitted his thoroughbred Pole Stamina 180, complete with SRAM AXS drivetrain and Trickstuff Direttissima brakes, against his bargain Facebook Marketplace find: the mighty Voodoo Hoodoo. How do the bikes compare? The results may surprise you!

@@larryhouse8358 Chain Reaction has the Nukeproof Dissent (Al 29") for £3300 at this point in time and the Vitus Dominer DH is selling for £2800. There are some "budget" DH rigs out there and the Vitus is surprisingly specced out with Boxxer Selects, Guide REs and a GX 7spd groupset. Sunringle wheels and Maxxis DH tyres set it up to be a decent entry DH bike. But I get your point, £3000 is just about the cheapest end of the DH market but, at least where I am in Wiltshire (UK), the second-hand market is full of heartbreaking listings, I'm talking custom builds with top end specs going for under £1500. This corner of the world doesn't really warrant big rigs and Enduros are apidly becoming capable of competing with DHs but are easier to live with day to day. We're seeing that reflected in many local shops and online now, people are moving toward hard-core trail bikes and Enduros and it's causing some reasonable offers on the bigger bikes.

dunnotck1 I’m from Brazil, which is as bad as Mexico in which regards to bike safety... now I live in Vancouver, where is just as bad as there... the thing is, in my opinion, you should buy the best bike you can afford, and it should be suitable for what you do. I bought a Specialized rock hopper two years ago to ride while I was away from home (I couldn't bring my bike with me) that cheap bike hold a few KOMs on the climbs around Sayulita Mexico. The only thing on that bike that i was annoyed with was the entry level Sun tour "suspension". So if you feel you can't afford to get in to riding.. think again. buy a bike you can afford and ignore those on carbon bikes because you could end up with better skills than them.

I could find a difference right a way when I rode an AM/Enduro the first time, I was able to go faster than I can on my hardtail. Maybe it was the 2.4 in tires, or the slacker geo, or the fact that it isn’t a two year old clapped out Rockhopper, but I was significantly faster on my easy home trails.

This confirmed to me as the average Joe I that am, that I do not need to spend this much money on a bike. I bought two bikes this year. A gravel bike for 1400€ and a XC fully for 2000€ . And I love them both very much. They are really good bikes and fit my purpose. I first was thinking about spending all that hard saved money on just one bike. I am really glad I did not. But then I also would never spend to much money on a car. I am happy with a small car. I do not need a Ferrari.
