I'm using Maxxis Reckon 2.25 and maxxis reckon race 2.4 29 inch wheels on a custom built 1.1k€ worth Hardtail and i use this bike with this set of tyres on almost any terrain and i have no complaints at all. I do around 800-900km distance in a month, on asphalt, mud, in the forrest, for dirtjumps, while raining , and they have insane grip cause i feel like i m surfing on the bike all the time. After 1400km distance use they are still insane

Bought a bike that came with Nobby Nics (2.6 front, 2.4 rear) which I run as a SS hardtail. Great tires, but way too aggressive for the hardpack and granite where I ride. I switched to the new Mezcal XC race (2.4 front/2.4 rear) with the Air-liner light (foam inserts). The difference was night and day. The bike came alive on the Mezcals. So much more playful. Way more grip than you would expect, and crazy fast rolling. I went from a gummy, draggy feel with the Nics, to the feeling of floating on the trail. Perfect for the hardpack clay, granite and wet roots. I actually broke traction more on the Nics, especially with out of the saddle technical climbing. The nobs on the Nics did take some bite out of the rooty sections, but now I can run lower pressures on the Mezcals without much increased drag. Mezcals are much lighter even with the inserts. Just goes to show how important tire selection is to the feel of the bike. Classic case of being "over tyred".

Excellent info, something I’ve always tried to understand is the correct tyre to use. I did a lot of research for my hardtail and I’m the end took off the Vittoria barzos. Replaced them with two schwalbe magic Mary’s and am so glad I did… completely changed my rides and feeling of security on the bike.

@fraanzfan8158 insurance, gas, maintenance,...double the cost for a motorcycle compared to a bike plus a motocross you have limitations of where you can go. Mountain biking is way more flexible. Buy a used bike and buy online parts if you cannot afford bike shops. Biking can cost a small fraction of a motorcycle. Also crash a motorcycle and the cost of fixing it is very high. Upgrade parts for motorcycle can cost tens of thousands

Tires are very complex, especially if you’re new to MTB. In my experience, the items that matter the most are tread pattern and lug sizes. The tire size, compound, casing type, etc. are generally predetermined by your bike or the tire tread (or cost if you’re on a low budget). If you’re fully lost though, ask some friends or other riders in your local area. You will see a pattern between the type of tire they use and their riding style/riding conditions.
