What's your thoughts on 3d printed bikes? Should we have more metal bikes over carbon? 🤔 let us know 👇
@tim__sadler11 ай бұрын
I've said it before and I'll say it again - there will be a time when we look back on our use of carbon and really question why we did it from an environmental point of view. No point celebrating the outdoors, if we feed the machine that is destroying it. #justsayin
@rider6510 ай бұрын
The MAIN benefit of 3D/4D should BE the LOWERING of cost to produce bikes. If that doesn't happen after big bike manufactures eventually switch over to that type of MOD production, then it's a BS premise. Once the printers become more affordable and more prevalent, the COGM should have a leveling point then profit will tip the scales. With less overhead, MOH less personnel, the margins will not need to be the same as they are now. But of course inept, ignorant companies will remain greed-driven.

Regarding the 3D printed bike: I've used the design software that produces these rather odd structural shapes. The engineer enters the design constraints (interfaces, loads, envelope/stay out zones) and manufacturing method (machined, formed, 3D printing, etc). Then, you can optimize for weight, strength, or cost. As a stress analysis engineer, I found this software very revealing to help understand optimization. This type of software has been in use for more than a decade in the aerospace industry.

With it being electric the concentration of pressurized water in that area that it would inevitably take to clean out is going to cause issues. But if it were like a traditional bike. Id blast it out and make sure everythings dry after so i dont wreck bearings. Wouldnt be so bad as a traditional bike. But yeah i can see some issues with cleaning that all the time being an e bike.

Here in Lander Wyoming the local bike club grooms some hiking trails in the national forests (not some road that is not plowed) that are so much fun when conditions are right the trails are hard packed it is like they are paved all the rocks and obstacles are covered with snow and when you fall it is no big deal. It is a special experience because the conditions that make it fun don"t last for long, so many things can change it like wind, temperature and foot traffic ( they can put big postholes in the trail) All and all then conditions are right the hard packed snow is hard to beat. fast and smooth.

The alloy Atherton frame I image will allow them to reach lower price points, and hats off to them for trying to engineer it differently. Carbon will always be infinitely more tuneable and engineers can have a lot of freedom - it's just a shame that not all of it can be seen.
@KarstRats10 ай бұрын
Yeah its tunable. But it seems like the engineers that are designing them dont know anything about rigidity through geometry. Which is killing carbon bikes. Snaps in parts that dont normally snap. Etc. were just not there yet. They shouldnt he on the market yet.

@@rupedog get your info straight bro...trek , yes the bycicle company, conducted the first study themselves... quote: The most interesting part of Trek's new report is a study completed on the carbon emissions created by the raw materials, manufacturing and transporting its bikes. Trek decided to investigate the carbon emissions for four of its most popular models (Madone, Marlin, Rail and Fuel EX), then broke each down by the different spec options. The biggest takeaway from this study is the significant impact carbon fibre can have on emissions, with carbon frames appearing to produce around three times higher emissions than their aluminium counterparts*. To take the Fuel EX range as an example, the highest level alloy framed bike appears to produce ≈120 kg C02e on Trek's chart, way below the average in this test of 174 kg C02e. However, the base-level carbon Ful EX creates just above the average emissions level at ≈175 kg C02e. At the very top of the Fuel EX range, on a bike that contains a lot of carbon components alongside a carbon frame, the emissions rise even further to an estimated ≈225 kg C02e for the 9.9 X01 and XTR models. Incredibly, just the Fuel EX carbon frameset sits at around ≈80 kg C02e, meaning a carbon frame alone is not far off the emissions of a complete alloy Fuel EX 8 (≈120kg). www.pinkbike.com/news/carbon-frames-produce-more-emissions-than-alloy-and-more-key-points-from-treks-sustainability-report.html
