Dang! Great collection and thanks GMBN for sharing. Two things: 1) Klein’s were made in Western Washington state so mud clearance was definitely a thing, though our mud isn’t as sticky as other parts of the country. B) One of the bikes had Mavic MA40 road rims cut down to 26”-maybe other folks were doing that, but maybe those wheels came from Keith Bontrager? Thanks again for awesome content.

Retrobike.co.uk member here - those paint jobs are way more complex than anyone realises. Not just a couple of colours faded together, there are multiple different colours laid on top of each other to make the final effect you can see. One colour would never look like that on its own. There are a couple of people who restore the paint on old Kleins and they know what order of colours to lay on top of each other. Long waiting lists and very expensive to have repainted - the original paint is still the one to have but due to all the layers they can be hard to touch up effectively.
@DjDolHaus86

I used to do a fair bit of airbrushing/custom paint work before my hands went bad and I was fascinated by the paintwork on display here, as you say it's a multi layer fade and it all looks super clean which is no mean feat when working on curved tubing particularly on the insides. One errant stroke, one jolt as you bump your hand or airline against the frame, one spit as a result of a blocked nozzle and you've got to start the whole thing again.

I started riding MTB in ‘79 on a Sears Canada catalogue sourced bike. My first REAL mountain bike was a 1987 Miele Aries 550, with a similar blue/green fade and splatter. From ‘90-‘93 I managed a LBS and remember A-Headsets coming to market. Wanna say ‘92, what a revelation.. I mounted one on my Aluminum Wheeler(from Germany I believe, similar to Klein) with full XT and thumbshifters. Weight was 20lbs. What a machine. Keep the fantastic RETRO content coming. Cheers.

WOW! Some memories there! My 1980's best buddy and riding partner, gone but never forgotten, had an Attitude in the orange fade, then showed up one day with an Adroit in Gator fade. We were all envious. He was 6'4" so the bikes were XLs. And spectacular! And he kicked our asses on those bikes. The one thing I remember and did not see on this video is a Klein with the rear brake under the chainstays. Jim's Attitude had that. I was a mud collector, but sure cleaned up the back end of the bike. The collector might need to add one of those to the collection....

That's because this collector knows what to avoid like the plague! (I've used this expression like three times this week. Poor form, I realize. Sorry.) Wow, beautiful. I'm in Victoria BC, Canada and the local shop at that time, Pacific Cycles was a Klein dealer and just about daily I went 8n to oogle at the stunning pieces. The Adroit, Attitude and lower end. I recall they had this display of various tubes with the different paint options. So far ahead of others. Internal routing, integrated head sets crazy. The early, mid 90s hold a special place in my heart for mountain bikes, just before the behemoths bought up smaller brands like Klein, Bontrager, Brodie, Syncros, Race Face, Nuke Proof, Ringle... so much awesomeness.

I wore out three sets of wheels until the company was sued out of existence. I let it go to the dump. HOW? WHY? WTF????? (I've since obtained two nice replacements. One has been completely refurbished, the second is in waiting...) BUT, when my '85 Crack-N-Fail cracked at the head tube, Cannondale let me Dremel out the serial number from the BB shell and send it to them. I’m speechless! 😶 these bikes are from the period where I started to begin with mountanbiking. My first bike was a Cannondale Super V. I was that time also impressed by the KLEIN mtb’s

This makes me miss my Klein Rascal that was stolen out of my garage 2 years ago just after I put a bunch of work modernizing it. Great bikes and still fun to ride today.

That sucks. So sorry to hear. There's been a major rash of burglary in my area as of late. Crazy since almost everyone's home these days. Anyway, I posted on my local NextDoor to tell people to LOCK YOUR DAMN BIKES! Just because you think your garage is secure doesn't mean it is. Plus, you already own a damn lock, so USE IT!!! If it's a nice bike, it needs a lock - ALWAYS. No such thing as "a bike too nice to lock up." Just beefed up my basement door lock and am adding shackle guards to my garage with a shit load of bikes and tools. I'm making it VERY HARD for the fuckers to steal my shit!!!

Beautiful bikes thank you for sharing them. I really like the older mountain bikes the style was rapidly changing from year to year. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.

Back when high quality cycling components were made in France and USA. Beautiful industrial craftsmanship. No doubt that today’s bikes are better in every way, but it’s still nice to see a blast from the past.

So pretty!! I always wanted one too! I loved Ringle parts in the 90s..The Kooka cranks that matched my purple Ringle bits were complete junk! Flexy and eventually snapped. I miss that bike! It was a built up Mongoose IBOC that was Burple with purple everything. Sooo 90s

I have a yellow/orange koi color fade Klein Attitude Comp & just love it. Out of all of my bikes, it may very well be my favorite even though it was made 20 something years ago!

I was a bike mechanic back in the early '90s, and I can tell you those Klein pressed-in headset bearings were garbage--nothing but trouble! Half of them failed within 6 months, and could only be sourced from Klein.

I remember these in the 90's. The Altitude on the left with the pink forks brought back an absolute flood of memories. I raced a Santa Cruz built Bontrager during this era, but always love Klein. MTB's these days couldn't be more boring if they came with a glass of warm milk. Stay well, everyone.

I live in Aberdeen Wa, just up I5 from Chehalis. My uncle Ron worked there so my uncles had a hookup on the top bikes back in the late 80s with the Rascle, then the Attitude in the early to mid 90s, then I got the chance to get in it in 2000 with one of the last Adroit bikes. I love it. I did a xtr build and I am going to do another rebuild on it and take it up to date. Love it

I love those bikes! I used to work at a shop and we sold Klein’s. This was after they were purchased by Trek but still bikes were amazing. This is the time that the Mantras were coming out. One special bike owner order was the road bike, Quantum Pro which came with the Dura-Ace and the new deep dish Rolf wheels when at the time came with I believe the Hugi hubs. The sound of those wheels were amazing. The color that bike came with was Chameleon Fire, which was a purple with some metal flakes to make it shinny BUT! When viewed at different angles under the sun had a green tone to it. Amazing bike and right away that bike sold!
