Best introduction for this new systems, thank you ! Now, you know what would be a great idea? Get 2 identical EMTB's with XT gearing, one on HG the other one on LG and test ride them back to back. I'd like too hear some ride impressions. How much smoother LG shifts under load? Is it noticeably slower? Is the weight noticeable? Is 11 speed vs. 12 speed a big drawback? How about the gearing range? C'mon Doddy, pretty sure you dig this stuff as much I do!

Questions: I guess the chain does not really „wear slower“ because the sizes of the parts are the same as on 11-speed Hyperglide. But do they say that you can use your chain longer like the 1% wear we hab with 9-speed instead of the 0.5% with 12-speed? Retro question: What was the difference with 8-speed IG?
@peglor
@peglor 2 жыл бұрын
Interglide was Shimano's first cassette ramp design to allow the chain to move more cleanly from big to small sprockets, but GMBN has forgotten completely about this for some reason (And it's not like they weren't reminded in the comments on previous videos where they made exactly the same omission). As for the chain, possibly what Shimano are doing is making the old 10 and 11 speed chains but with 12 speed chain materials, since that technology wasn't ready for mass production when 10 and 11 speed came out, and even though they are narrower and lighter, 12 speed chains are not less durable than 10 and 11 speed, some testing shows them to be more durable. Not using a 10 speed top gear makes a huge difference to the likelihood of the chain skipping, especially on 1x drivetrains where riders will spend a lot of time in this gear - good engineering practice for industrial chain drives sets a lower limit at 11 teeth for the sprocket size.

After only getting 765 miles out of the Box 4 ebike groupset before it was trashed (tried a chain change at 0.75 wear but lots of slipping), I've ordered a full setup with extra chains and cassettes. I'm on an ebike, so I expected a bit more wear, bit less than 1000 miles seems crap for a supposedly ebike specific 8 speed setup. Linkglide price seems very attractive and being Shimano probably easier to get hold of. If they can increase the lifetime of the components, it's a win for me. As an aside, the box 4 derailleur also has significant play on the pivot, so I'm not likely to go back to them even if linkglide is a bust. Never had anything other than jockey wheels wear out on Shimano/SRAM.

12 speed /Shimano is 510% range, 12 speed SRAM is 520% range, but you have to live with what is effectively a 2 gear jump from 1st to second gear because it was tacked on as an afterthought after Shimano released their 10-51, since SRAM before that used 10-50. An 11-50 cassette like the 11 speed Linkglide has a range of 455%. If you want proper range, the 618% on Shimano 2x12 can't be beaten as an off the shelf option.

@@SimonBauer7 It depends very much on where you ride - on the road in a mostly flat area, one gear will do very well. Off road on sustained climbs steep enough to the point where you've to move forward to stop the bike from wheelieing out, a much bigger gear range is needed.

You should have compared it to the 11s Deore XT M800 lineup. Yes, with 11s HG one can only get 11-46T cassette (probably enough for most people anyway) but otherwise, the total price would be similar to the new 11s LG... but that wouldn't look as impressive from marketing perspective, right?

This video has an insane amount of talking for very little actual content, so to save people watching: Linkglide is more durable, potentially up to 3 times as durable as existing drivetrains, fits on a standard Shimano hub spline (Not microspline) and has 10 speed (11-43 390% range - basically useless for riding in actual mountains, but ideal for all weather commuting and ebikes) and 11 speed (11-50 455% range - usable for trail centers, but not enough range for all day/marathon style riding without compromising on a decent top gear to get a good climbing range - the top 3 sprockets being sold separately might help here) cassette options. The chain, cassette, derailleur and shifter (Officially at least) won't work with other 10 and 11 speed setups, but we won't know till people actually try them. It's heavier, but not by enough any sane person should care, and a decent bit cheaper than 12 speed, so a move in the right direction overall. As for my take on this: If they haven't changed the jockey wheel cartridge bearing design in the derailleur - preferably back to the ceramic bushings they used for decades that would happily run (And shift gears perfectly) even after the teeth were worn completely off the jockey wheels - Linkglide drivetrains are going to outlast the jockey wheel bearings in the derailleur significantly. Since there's no mention of front derailleur or even chainring compatibility, I can only assume this is a 1x setup only and they're not mentioning this because ebikes tend to come with their own cranks and chainring. Given how chewed the 36 tooth chainring on my 2x12 gets after a season of use (Not an ebike), if the chain and sprocket is genuinely 3 times as durable as their current setups, the chainring will be the next weak point on Linkglide - if they make a proper steel (Or steel teeth on an Al spider) chainring for spline mount cranks they could fix that easily though. If this isn't front derailleur compatible - and it doesn't appear to be given there's no mention of it in this video - in reality it's only for ebikes and year round commuters, as the people who tend to put in the miles off road in bad conditions also tend to be the people who's routes make full use of the 600%+ gear range the 2x12 drivetrain offers (Or at least the 510% a 1x12 gives if they have more recent bikes designed to be incompatible with front derailleurs) because they go up long, properly steep climbs, cover road sections between trails, and cycle the road to the trails.

@@hollownexus9316 It's optional to buy any of this - my point is that Shimano is an engineering company that make good parts and SRAM is a marketing company that has used its own marketing to convince itself it's an engineering company. Engineers tend to be drawn to the best solution, marketers are drawn to the highest profit margin and it shows when the parts made by the two companies are compared. If SRAM released this they'd charge 3 times as much and justify it because they claim it will last 3 times longer.

I have Microshift Advent group-set (9 speed rear derailleur and 11-42 9 speed cassette) and a 32t narrow wide crank (which is for 11/12speed). I’ve been riding this stock setup on my rockrider st530 for some time and want to upgrade only the front crank with the Shimano Cuest 40t Linkglide. Will it work with the cassette and chain that I already have on the bike? I’m not sure if a Linkglide chain will work on a HG cassette or if a HG chain will work on a LG chainring. Any advices? I know it's a bit harsh but... I think they dropped the ball it should shift just as top notch as xt 12 speed and just be a little heavier and still be available with same 12 speed options and realistically it would actual cost a little more then the xt being built to last 3 times as long.

You can’t have it both ways my man. The things that make XT HG 12sp shift so well limit its lifespan. (Short thin teeth with ramps everywhere) More gears = tighter tolerances,(more costly) smaller chains and less robustness in muddy conditions due to lack of clearance. Taller, wider teeth with fewer ramps last longer and are cheaper to manufacture. Doddy explains this in the video.

Using your brake as a clutch (motor off) is the best option An. You wouldn't change gears without using a clutch on a motorbike or manual transmission car would you? Any mid drive motor is going to produce more torque and more consistently than your legs.

So they have gone backwards, they went to 80s early 90: strong chains and durable like in 5-6-7-8 speeds that last a lot more than 12 speeds chains and casettes and cost today little money. I still ride 10 speeds. But what I Will buy is the chains. They say is not compatible but I dont trust them, It is like sram and Shimano 12s that is not compatible acording to manufactures ?

I went from 3x9 to 1x11 and got very little mileage. The lack of gear range meant I had to use 32x11 a lot which meant the chain and cassette was trashed quickly. I decided to move to 2x11 and get the gear range back as well as more options not using the tiny cogs that wear quickly. If linkglide was available when I changed I'd have gone for it then. However I still don't think my method of replacing chains often will still make a LG setup cheaper to run than a 2x11. I still have a clutch mech and I'm using 38/28 front rings. I get to share the wear across a 11-40 cassette and two chainrings. With 1x the small front chainring is still getting abused all the time
