2024 turned out to be the year of the electric super truck: The $100,000+ electric pickup or SUV that draws the obsession of those who love expensive, exclusive toys.
For GMC Hummer EV, 2024 was a banner year, too. After a slow start in 2023, the all-electric super EV filled with novel functions, off-road prowess and fun details found its tribe and is on track to sell 10,000 units this year.
The GMC Hummer EV’s innovations may dominate the story, but its sheer horsepower is a top selling point: the 2X base model SUV, priced from $96,550, produces up to 570 hp from its dual motor system. The 3X SUV, priced from $104,650, has an output of up to 830 hp from 3 motors. For one of the largest power-output EVs on the road, the Hummer EV 3X pickup truck, with a larger battery pack and longer wheel base, generates up to 1,000 hp.
Both the SUV and pickup truck deliver more than 300 miles of driving range on a single charge. To ensure the Hummer can go the distance, it can charge quickly-100 miles in 10 minutes-at a public DC fast charge station, and one-pedal driving and the brake regeneration paddle will add to the range.
The Hummer EV started out as a ‘moon shot’ project with the mission of showcasing all an EV can do. And for this it stands apart from its competitors, the Tesla Cyber Truck and Ford F-150 Lightning, though its close relative, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, carries some of Hummer EV’s features.
For all of GMC’s dreaming of far-out ideas, the end result in is the ultimate game of discovery that may take time to master: using four-wheel steering to subtly but distinctly move the Hummer EV sideways, a mode GMC calls “crab walk.” To plow through up to 32 inches of water in Extract mode by increasing ground clearance to 16 inches. To tow up to 11,500 pounds. To “launch” the Hummer, expending all its horsepower at once; GMC calls this Watts to Freedom, or WFT for short.
