You are fortunate to have found this vehicle, I understand they are rare and performed well, but not many were built. Nice bolt removal trick with the welder. I have heard of a rivet nut that might be handy on a project like this.

Not that rare for the era. They made 12000ish, and there are still 8-9 thousand in the GMC registry. You can bring one of these back from nearly dead because of the way they were made. Only a bad frame is really a show stopper.

You were a victim of chemistry. The steel bolts were bolted into brass fittings, and those metals corrode when fastened together. I think this was only on 73s and (some?) 74s.

Hey Mike, great job! My son and I have two GMCs (76 Birchaven & 78 Palm Beach). Our plan is to keep the palm beach as stock as possible and restomod the birchaven as you are doing. We picked up most of the Palm Beach interior parts missing (even found the original clock!) from Jim Bounds/Jason Stryker last week at the GMC Motorhome Coop liquidation. Their videos have a lot of information for you in chasing down leaks and stabilizing the core structure. Love the format. Keep these coming. You’ll be a huge asset to the community.

Thanks Ray, I have been watching Jim's videos. I called him yesterday to discuss some questions I had. He is a nice man.

A little oil would go a long way in preserving your drill bits.

I agree but I hate the mess

Left hand drill bits should make that job a snap. If you have a steady hand i wouldn't cut them off first. just saw this video randomly neat project you have there

I do need to buy some LH drill bits. I did drill the heads off the screws to remove the hatch. The heat was the key to removing the inserts. Drilling took too long to generate the heat needed to spin the inserts.

I want to see someone shove a 6.6 duramax or a detroit 6.5 in one of these
@Mike_Classic_Cars-GMCMotorhome Жыл бұрын
There are several 6.5l out there. Manny of Manny's Transmission has all the information you need to make it happen. If the 455 lets me down I will be looking to install an 8.1l gasser.

There are a number of coaches running around with Caddy 500 CID engines in them.
