Traveled to southern Oregon to bring this 1956 GMC truck back to life. Detroit diesel powered 471 had been sitting in a pasture for 26 years. Watch it roar back to life with its first start.

Amazing old Detroit! They probably parked it decades ago when the clutch went out on it. Nobody wanted to mess with the old truck back then. I can’t believe the brake chambers and air system worked so well after sitting for so long! Another excellent video Scott and Kelly!

My Dad Harold Berge rebuilt many different engines in his life. He worked for Acklands , Cullen Detroit and many others. His knowledge was vast, and could fix anything. He also taught apprentices. He worked on Earth Movers just to name a few. He had a real gift for Mechanics. When he wasnt at work he was in his shop working on his vehicles or someone elses. He also welded and fixed many things. His welding was very neat and precise. He also had projects going. I was his "Shadow" when growing up,I loved watching him . I also learned a lot from him.He was a wonderful man. I use to help him with certain things that I could manage bleed brakes.take apart brakes etc. Some electrical ,plumbing. Thank you Dad for all the knowledge you gave me I was lucky to have you as my Dad. I miss you everyday Love Tracey

I remember back in 1980 my dad bought a GMC just like that with the same diesel engine he turned in to a hopps truck worked at the same ranch from 1980 to 2000 but we never got rid of the old GMC we still have her till this day don't use her that much anymore but she still fires right up Everytime she still has plenty of life and power for being a old lady that's the name we gave her years ago just thought I'd share that with everyone thank you and God bless

Another thing that always surprises me is how quiet most Detroits are at idle. My 2014 6.7 Cummins is louder at idle, but the Cummins could NEVER match the awesome sound of a Detroit at full tilt with that scream. I just love the 2 stroke Detroit.

Watching you work on these Diesel engines takes me back to my apprenticeship in the 1960 working on British engines and all sorts of earthmoving machines back then you would strip engines gearboxes diffs and replace parts not the whole thing brake linings where striped and new riveted on .So simple no computer just simple engines . The guy I trained with would listen to the trucks drive into the workshop and know what was wrong with it before the driver got out of the truck I still remember cutting out cardboard to put valves in prior to grinding by hand with valve compound. It’s funny how it all comes back while watching someone like you .to an outsider looking at you it must seam like a wizard without a computer 😅😅😅😅😅cheers from John in the UK 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

For me you cannot beat two stroke diesels with their distinctive sound and smell and I am particularly fond of Detroit's. The old GMC truck you revived rolled off the production line the same year I did and I would love to own one but I have already looked on the internet and they seem to be uncommon in Australia. I own an old Commer truck with a Rootes "knocker" horizontally opposed, three cylinder two stroke diesel in it. (Sorry I tried to add an image but couldn't figure out how.) The old knocker sat neglected for more than twenty years prior to my buying it about twenty four years ago. After precautionary fuel and oil transfusions and liberal use of a grease gun at every lube point I could find the tired old motor roared to life again after a few turns without any fuss at all. I used the truck to haul cumbersome opal mining machinery about the desert and will always love the sound and smell of it. A buddy of mine is currently using it on loan and it is still roaring away with hearty enthusiasm. Knockers are famous for their distinctive sound and as I crossed a cattle grid while I was driving mine from where it had lain disused for so long to a nearby town, the exhaust broke off just in front of the muffler. By the time I finished the trip I could hardly hear for a while due to the phenomenal howl of that old engine exiting a straight through system just behind the cab on the driver's side. The noise was so loud that while I was still about five kilometers out from my destination a local drove out to investigate the source of the incredible racket!

I worked for greyhound back n late 60s to mid 80s and built 671s to 871s most of all components for buses in chamblee ga then went to the Atlanta ga shop I also drove the truck that delivered the rebuilt parts to all the garage in south east to New York. I still wonder how many old farts are still around. To hear that engine fire off brings back so many memories. You’ll see my late wife’s name pop up on this but all I was ever called was Crane.

Love this! This is definitely ASMR for old mechanics like me.😁 I was cringing though while he was pumping that dry-rotted tire up.. YIKES! Those old rims were out-lawed for a reason.😮 That little 4-71 actually started pretty easily after you got the rack and the governor straightened out. Heck, a little TLC, new tires, and rebuild the bed, and that truck would be serviceable again!😉👍

I just love it! this is probably my favorite video Bus Grease Monkey Thank you for all your knowledge and immense detail you try to use. This reminds me of when me and dad would lowboy up the big Dynahoe 190-4 and go to work, "the Dynahoe 190-4 was the second biggest backhoe ever made to this day very tough machines" our Dynahoe was from a state auction in the early 1990's from the factory it had a jackhammer on the rear boom, a massive compressor on front forks, the forks are very strong. They can lift beyond what the machine can lift at maximum I know this from experience. it now has a 30" rear bucket and a four in one front bucket, still have the forks. we would have to put blocks on the pedals, because I was still a kid, and at 8 years old dig holes for most of the day. we still have that backhoe, and it still runs like a champion even after several thousand hours, a touch of the key and its running.

The last bit reminded me of my apprenticeship at Holden in Australia. We started off with the Chev Luv ute, then it became the KB Isuzu ute and then the Holden Rodeo. The 4x4 wagon was called a Holden Jackaroo and that coupe was a Holden Gemini. We only had the diesel in the top trim Gemini sedan and exported heaps of them to Indonesia where they were a huge success.

Everybody needs a fork lift like that one, and that road grader too. Really old 10 speed. Never have seen one with 5th and 10th on that side of the trans, below Reverse like that. The guy from Elderlyiron loves those 56 GMC's He is in Oregon also. Wow those old brake cans still working after all those years. Sledge hammer to the brake shoes Scott. Just pop them a few times, with say a 6lb hammer. Or 8 lb hammer. That rear end is a top loader, all MACK rear ends are like that, very strong, last long time. Steel wool web could be a Black Widow, or Brown Recluse, you are on the west coast. That could have been a thrill having one of those drop down at you while your digging in it's web.

I am 72 years of age and to go down memory lane is priceless! David Bradly was Sears implement side. I thought I seen a torino in that pup assortment. I would pay good money to take my last breath of air in that car. I bought one new when I came home from Nam. I was fast and loud, not the tv series but I and that car made NO friends as I ripped through towns. I had it on a buck forty on the speedo and a cop in Nevada caught me doing that. I stopped like I should when he whipped the lights on me and he was driving a volkswagen so leaving him in the dust wasn't a problem but I knew that I was going to get a ticket but just wanted to stretch her legs a bit in the desert. Well he was a proud prick! Put the cuffs on me and stuffed me in the back seat. I stand six foot and at the time weighed about 225 ish as my twenty two inch by ceps said on he tape measure. I lifted weights in the service for the championship but came in forth. My shirts were altered so I could wear them. He takes me to jail and had my car with everything I owned in it to the crusher and took pictures. They smashed it up the best they could and my 428 cobra jet was no more and even my clothes were gone. I was roading across from N. Carolina and seeing the country as I headed home in Coos Bay. I seen the judge the first monday and it was a wednesday when he took me to jail. So starved to death as I ate some grub in them days. I got a little box of cereal with water in the morning and a two bite berger at nite. I was hungry. The judge said: What have you got to say for yourself? I said not guilty and I want a jury trial ASP okay.. Judge said you didn't hurt no one so denied. I told him fine. I get out someday and my mom who is a state attorney will take my case. (I was lying through my teeth but ran a bluff) They said bull!!! I said call this no., and find out cause she is going to be worried about her only boy getting home... The judge turned almost red then got quiet and told the cop he wanted to speak to him and for me back to jail. I said fine, I'm willing to go. I have a friend over the way who knows about where I am so when I don't show up, he will just call my mom and she will put the systems detectives out to find me which shouldn't take more than say four days most cause I had called him the night before and he knew close to where I should be so yeah she will find me, don't spend your dime cause she will be up in your face so far that you'll wait a week to see your reflection. And then laughed, let go jailer and the judge told me to set down. So I paused for a second then did. He talked to that sherriff like he was going to explode. Next thing I know is the cuffs are finally off and my wrists are swollen bad cause the cuffs just did click once. Long story short version: I made them get me a car, a new set of clothes for a change of laundry. Five hundred dollars in cash in pocket and a don't ever come back. I guess I wore my welcome out but I never went back for years until they had a auction at Sparks and I needed a dozer and a bunch of stuff I could load with it. I went meaning to buy cause it was a huge auction so took my lowboy truck down with me. I thought about that day in court knowing I was going to pay a ticket for being stupid. What the hell, its a big truck and my name is on the door. I have a stack of credit cards so lets go. So the wife and I went there to see that town and it had all but dried up like most tumbleweed towns. I had my wife go in to the town gas station and he told her that things were not the same after the cop got fired for something that happened a long time ago so she said do you remember that name on the door of that truck out there getting fuel? He pondered for a minute or so then said could he speak to me. She said that she would ask me. So I went in with her and the guy at the station said yep, that him and laughed. Tried to shake my hand which I'm not into all that much. He said he would go half with me on the fuel and I said why. He told me that it was his grand pa that was the judge and he had mentioned my name a hundred times before he past on. I told him no, I'll pay but why did gramps go, and he said well after grandpa had to retire, he just hated kids and was bitter. And as Paul Harvey said, thats the rest of that story

We'd rebuild a V-12 and run it in the shop with marine exhaust manifolds. They sound like a dragster popping on every cylinder. The engine would be on blocks just sitting and would be very smooth through the rpm. 4 Cycle engines would want to dance around the floor. Very old school at my Dad's shop 40 years ago. This has old figure 8 liners, low compression 18 to 1, newer N series had 21 to 1 compression ratio and much better performance wise.

Luv the old truck. Detroit was the finest engine on the road to my opinion. I had the 8 v 92 + 8v 71 nothing sounds as good as good as a Detroit on quiet night on a long road.

This is what I do on my days off. Watch hours of old trucks getting revived. No red blood here. Just diesel green.

I sat here in utter amazement watching you bring this fabulous truck back to life. It was so good to see all of you guys working together to get her operating. It makes you wonder, what prompted the former owner to park a great truck like that which does not show any signs of serious damage or disrepair? I simply love watching people bring old vehicles back to life. I subscribed and will be watching future videos -- from southern Indiana, my old beater is a 1955 Chevrolet 210 4-door.
