stroke play: the winner is the lowest score over the entire round (like the US Open, etc.) match play: The final score doesn't matter, just win more holes than you're opponent and you win the match. Hence when Garrett says "1 up" it means he got the better score that hole and won the hole.

Match play in golf - the score is reckoned by counting the holes won by each side, as opposed to the number of strokes taken.

Match play: 2 players competing on each hole for the lower score. Whoever shoots the lower score on a hole is awarded a point, and a point is lost for losing a hole. No point is awarded if the scores are matched which means the hole is halved. So if I win the first hole I go 1 up, then if you win the second we're all square again because we each have a point. So on, so forth
