This is a hell of a time to be alive for new chess players with GMs analysing games and giving you insights; and being able to play anybody at any time from anywhere in the world. When I was growing up I could only play against the computer on my Atari2600, and I'd be lucky to find a chess puzzle in the local newspaper..
@Puschit1
@Puschit1 Ай бұрын
I had trouble finding opponents among family, friends and neighbours because I was too good for casuals (and there was no club in my village). So I got a chess computer for christmas and it was fun for a while but ... well, at level 1&2 it did stange moves and blunders, at level 3 it was about my strength but it just could not calculate certain lines or more than 3 moves ahead and would fall for the same tricks over and over. So I moved to level 4 which was perfect difficulty for me - but it took as much time to make a move like humans in classic games once it left its opening library. If you gave it a puzzle and let it try to solve it on max level (8) you would get a result next day ...
@JoeBob79569
@JoeBob79569 Ай бұрын
@@Puschit1 I had no idea how to play chess when I got the game for the Atari, and I didn't even know what the pieces were called and I had the king and queen mixed up for years, thinking that the king must obviously be the one who could move all around the place, and the queen being a "woman" must be protected! I just figured out how to play from trial and error, and copying the computer's moves, but it was frustrating because just when I was starting to figure it out, the computer would do something like queen-side castling and I'd be furious thinking that it was an illegal move.. And the first time I got hit with an en passant I was absolutely convinced that it was cheating.. until I realised could do it myself too! But yea, I could never get any of my friends to play either, they were all more interested in playing football and digging holes in the ground and all that good stuff..

Great review. As a 2100 (LiChess?!) player I find the little titbits that Hikaru drops are invaluable. Not the moves but the little bits of advice that come with the moves, including how difficult it is to beat a 2500 GM (and thus HN wisely avoids such opens, as they will simply eat into your Elo as you draw these GMs) and the move order titbits. Stuff like this you cannot easily find in books, which by and large are geared towards beginners. I wish Hikaru would do a more 'advanced' video one of these days, along the lines of what the GM Danny did in his great (but depressing, lol for a lower rated GM) book "Gormally, Daniel (2016). Insanity, Passion and Addiction - A Year Inside the Chess World"
@mstefa007
@mstefa007 Ай бұрын
The difference is due to logarithmic scale. Someone at 600 rating doesn’t know all the rules of the game, someone at a 1000 will win 100% of time. 1600 to 2000 difference is much smaller but same expected result . You need to win 100% of time as 2000, but sometimes, in some games, 1600 will know the opening or stumble on a very good move . 2400-2800 - these are all well versed players - chance to beat them drop dramatically- but expectation is still 100% win for higher rated . They know the openings, their tactics are good, they know middle game plans and they know the endings. You need to find what is their weak point and can’t guarantee to find it on request in 100% of games .
@raylopez99
@raylopez99 Ай бұрын
@@mstefa007 Interesting. you might have something there, for huge Elo gaps (like 1000 points). In general however Elo is not logarithmic. A difference of 300 points will allow a win for the higher rated player 85% of the time (draws counting 1/2 point) whether the players are 2300 vs 2000 or 2700 vs 2400. That's what the stats say. But at huge Elo differences I do believe I recall seeing some non-linear effects such as what you describe.
@mstefa007
@mstefa007 Ай бұрын
@@raylopez99it’s not really logarithmic. What is logarithmic is quantity of knowledge needed for each next 100 ELO points. You get 800 when you know how to mate more or less. A bit more, some opening principles and endings, and you’re at 1600-2000 . But then the increase of knowledge becomes game of diminishing results. You learn particular new strategy against isolated queen pawn- but you encounter it in one every 20 games. Or a particular rook ending, and you see it every few years. So you need to learn many many small details to advance another 100 points.
