Skip to 16:23 for a typing demonstration.
This version is updated; the original had a repeat clip in it. Today we finally look Novelkeys' new switch; the Kailh BOX Pink switches, with medium-thick click bar. Also, the GMMK, which is a perfect test bed for these new switches. Hope you enjoy the video!
My keyboard reviews: bit.ly/1TbOtft
My switch teardowns: bit.ly/2C1QGHz
My TOP X videos: bit.ly/2FmpZfd
My XL typing demos: bit.ly/2OoAW3w
I'm Thomas and I do videos and reviews on mechanical keyboards ranging from the most sickening modern RGB gaming keyboards to vintage hardware relics, or sometimes keycaps or keyswitches ranging from Cherry MX to Alps SKCM to IBM buckling springs and anything in between.
Follow me on Twitter for updates on my keyboard videos! / chyrosran22
The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on a GMMK with BOX Pink switches right now. This was a very interesting project, I have to say. This is definitely among the best modern clicky switches out there."

@@matthewdunphy8524 I just bought the navies and i game a lot. Trust me when i say its all preference. There are many ppl that have no issues using navies for gaming. @@matthewdunphy8524 they are not terrible for gaming. That's not possible except if your kb is fucked up and doesn't register the key presses. :D They're pretty heavy though. Some people may prefer lighter switches when gaming. My main kb has navies and i have no problem gaming with it.

@@LlGHT I've never really had a problem with a switch being too "heavy." I guess it is funny I ask about Navys being too heavy for gaming, because I have been gaming on Unicomp Model M Buckling Springs for the last year or so. I'm also a bit of a d*** when it comes to keyboard sounds over my mic. I've had a few of my friends tell me it was really loud and I just tell them to f*** off and enjoy the ASMR I'm providing.

Correct. I know too much about USB standards and the reason is that there is a so-called "USB Boot Keyboard Protocol", which is a much reduced variant of the full USB input device protocol. Boot protocol is meant to be implemented by your BIOS, to ease BIOS developers' work, and it supports a maximum of 6 simultaneous keys (plus modifiers). It also means that if a keyboard implements anything more, it might not work with some BIOSes. So that's why most USB keyboards have 6KRO.

I'm really interested in this "modular keyboard" idea. Ever since you opened my eyes to the fact that MX Brown switches are shit, I have been using a Unicomp Model M. The Unicomp was the best keyboard I could get new for a relatively low price. I don't have the money to buy most of the exotic stuff you show on your channel, and I don't have a soldering iron to do a real custom build keyboard even if that option isn't astronomically expensive itself. These modular design keyboards open up an entirely new world of switch options for me. Now I can get something new that isn't a Cherry, Cherry clone, or Unicomp and still keep the price tag under $150.
@Spearra
@Spearra 5 жыл бұрын
Edit: Late af but its damn good! Weighs 2,000 grams and it is probably the largest gaming keyboard I have ever seen and used! There's a modular keyboard for $79.99 (USD) called the "Drakken Prothero Spektrum". To my knowledge, buying about 110 box switches would only be around $40 (USD) give or take. So if you want to try out one set of box switches, and a decent modular keyboard, apparently that one is good too. Mine should be coming in later today so I'll update whether or not it lives up to expectations. With my box navies coming in about two days. If its good, I'm so ready to save up to try out all the other box switches! Box Pink in particular since I'm using a Unicomp EnduraPro right now, and it would be great to have that fantastic feeling, but with NKRO. (I play a rhythm game that involves 9 keys at a time so I literally cannot use the Unicomp for that in particular) PS: Apparently the Drakken Prothero Spektrum has a decent build quality to boot, but again, I'll check back here if everything is as, or greater than expectations.

Maybe the Rosewill keyboard I got used for almost nothing has worn out switches, but I can barely tell any difference at all between its Cherry MX Browns and regular Cherry MX Reds. The tactility is so minuscule that there doesn't seem to be much reason for them to exist. There are non Cherry keyboards on Amazon left and right for under $50 (though probably not any with box switches), and a usable soldering iron shouldn't cost much more than $20. I like Cherry MX Blues more than my IBM Model M, though maybe it needs a bolt mod. I haven't seen inside. Either way, I like Blues more than my XT model F's switches as well. I think the only other Non Cherry switches I have tried yet are Outemu Blues, which weren't bad.

@Boyetto-san
@Boyetto-san 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on where you are in the world. The Tecware Phantom Elite TKL is a great budget choice that uses the same kind of hotswap sockets that can take any brand of switch, but is currently only available in the Asia-Pacific region (non-Elite versions are available in the US, but those only fit Outemu switches). In the North American region, the GMMK comes in full-size, TKL, and now 60% as well. Anywhere else in the world, the most readily available will probably be Logitech G Pro X keyboard. All keyboards mentioned above are hotswap compatible with any modern MX-based switch (Cherry, Kailh, Gateron, Outemu, among others). All are solid choices, but come in ascending order in price.

+Chyrosran22 hey thanks for the review! Would you tell me how make this arrangement of big enter key like yours, while still having big shift. This enter is protruding down to the left - it is exactly what I am looking for! I almost thought to start gluing two keys together to get big enter key...

Pavel Ravits It's a hotswappable ANSI keyboard, so you can just not install a switch where the backslash key would normally go and then just stick the big-ass enter keycap to cover over it. It does mean that you lose the backslash key unless you reprogram it via macro recording.

Hey, I’m looking for a hotswappable 60% board. If I’ll be getting a GK61 just like the one you reviewed but without keycaps or switches it’ll be 20 dollars cheaper than a GMMK Compact (the 60% version of the keyboard you reviewed in this video). Which should I get? Is it worth the extra money or should I maybe check something else at that price range? Thanks.

tbh both boards are pretty generic imo no huge differences apart from the mounting pin thing
@ocboomer

You have to be careful with hotswappable boards because they don't all take every type of switch. Like for example the E-Element Z-77 shown at 5:00 is actually Outemu only. And any other switch that uses the same thin pins as the Outemu does. These are usually distinguished by DIY (outemu) and CIY (any type), but not everytime. You just have to find an image where they show the connections on the pcb. The good ones all use the Kailh hotswap sockets where as the Outemu compatible ones use small pinholes.
@SimGunther

Is it true that any Kailh sockets that don't say "pcb" are assumed to only work with plate mounted switches?

This. Plenty of hotswappable keyboards are indeed out there, but most of those indeed do use Outemu sockets that will likely bend most other switches. Kailh hotswap sockets are visually distinguishable from Outemu because the sockets will be black plastic with a large rectangular hole in the middle containing spring-tensioned "teeth" that will adapt to any contact pin shape, whereas Outemu sockets are all metal with a tiny round hole with no flexible parts whatsoever, which is why it's incapable of adapting to switches of with bigger contact pins.

Nope. They're comissioned by NovelKeys, so you can pretty much only get them as loose switches from NovelKeys or partner retailers. Only the basic BOX switches (White, Red, Brown, and Black) are available with off-the-shelf keyboards.

I have the same keyboard w/ Box Navy switches and MAXKEY Black doubleshot abs SA keycaps. I purchased all about a year ago and have had zero problems with keycap cracking etc. All the lighting options etc on mine are done thru the keyboard itself by pressing different keys at the same time. Must be an earlier version. The space bar is a little rattly tho, anyone know how to fix this? I saw someone said to "clip" them? Thanks for turning me on to this great board bro! Clicky Clicky!
@TommyFenstermacher5150
@TommyFenstermacher5150 5 жыл бұрын
You should just be able to take the switch for any stabilized key out, remove the stabilizer, clip the appropriate legs, add some lube (to reduce rattle), and then reinstall the stab and switch and you should be good to go.

This isn't a pre-made board. It is a "modular" board. So you can buy the jade switches on novel keys, buy the $60 GMMK and some mx compatible keycaps, and just socket the jades right into the board without a soldering iron.
