I have a very specific memory of the night of the cough virus. I was playing on a RP server when the admins sent out a notice saying the server was going to be password locked and if you left you couldn't come back. When we were wondering why, word started spreading around about the virus. People started freaking out and gathering in the center of downtown to start talking about it like it was some major event going down, many too afraid to go to any other server and staying on to talk to someone about what was happening. Somehow, we never got infected, but watching it go down WHILE in game was crazy.

@@ratlobber I distinctly remember (and am pretty sure I have saved) an E2 script that would do exactly that. When spawned, it makes a small jack-o-lantern that when approached, creates a box around the player’s head with gman’s face as the texture (hence covering the screen) and plays the HL2 stalker scream. I know it’s been around for a LONG time, at least a decade, but I’m not sure of exactly when it was created. It’s entirely possible that rumors (or even an actual virus) were created based off of this original effect as well as kitty’s video.

Gm_TheDarkPit is far more similar, it's a huge dark pit that has a bunch of sections that are looped through with various things, giving the effect of a massive pit with lots of floors and random details.)

Another interesting note about the "cough" virus was that I believe it used an exploit specific to remote console or "rcon", and how a server's permissions and authority was setup. Not all servers had a set "rcon" password, and I believe those were safe, but many others did, and that's how it spread by downloading/uploading a .dll file between client and server. The interesting thing being that the virus would download the server's config file, which could contain said "rcon" password onto a client's computer, in the same directory as the .dll file. So, if at the time one was so inclined, they could purposely infect other servers in order to gain access to the rcon password, and do with that as they wanted, whether it be kicking or banning players, changing server settings, or as I admittedly had a bit fun doing, joining DarkRP servers and giving yourself essentially infinite money. Wild times.

About the Gman virus, one thing I witnessed that probably helped spread the rumour was that people started making Wiremod E2 chips that, if a player walked close to the chip, would spawn a prop with that gman texture on it in front of a player's face and play the fast zombie scream sound effect, effectively mimicing the virus, people would then just spawn that chip near the player spawn on servers and jumpscare the shit out of people.
@systemofapwne Жыл бұрын
I do remember these times. I even wrote a proof-of-concept "worm" (proper definition rather than virus) these days before that. "cough virus" was around. It was not gmods fault but rather valves, for how game files were distributed between clients and servers. However gmods gave us the flexibility to use Lua scripts, which escalated things.

My memory is kind o fuzzy on it, but I recall trying to load a local server using a map from a hogwarts_rp server and, I guess as a countermeasure for using it outside of the official server, there was this jumpscare. I don't recall exactly if there was a gman skin texture and screech, altough I think it's pretty possible, but the phrase "I'm looking at gay porn" was definetly on it.
@Leatherbelt665 Жыл бұрын
On 4:30, I personally have witnessed this virus myself while playing a DarkRP server. This occurred I remember around GMod 10. What Nelson340 describes is almost exactly what happened to me EXCEPT in section two it not only brings up the screaming gay porn talk but also explicitly shows men actually performing the act. I had no idea what was going on. I kept closing the browser but it would always reappear. It wasn't until I noticed the chatroom on steam was open with the 'Nimped by Chrisaster' and I immediately closed it. Afterwards, I was able to completely close out the tabs and what not and I performed a hard restart on my computer for good measures. I've asked people around my time on Gmod for YEARS about this and no one knew what the hell I was talking about. I've only recently heard about this similar report and I'm glad someone brought this up. I almost started to think this was all a vivid dream or something. This happened to me when I was 11 years old too so it was creepy and yet disturbing. I guess now I can confirm it really did happen! EDIT: I also wanted to add that I never saw a blurry G-Man head like he described on step one. I did however doremember an annoying screech.

I'm pretty sure I remember the gman face thing from playing on a darkRP server back in the day but I reckon it might've just been someone hijacking the server to imitate it after hearing your explaination on the matter. I definetely remember the cough virus though. I think I was lucky enough to not have it change my name or anything but I remember that happening to some old steam friends who I fell out of contact with. It's kinda funny but after the initial "scare" period of things I ended up finding the whole ordeal really fucking funny and it was super interesting to see it spread so far. This is unrelated but remembering darkRP also made me remember the time I was teleported by an admin over and over into a room with the goatse image on a spray, I was on a fucking dreadful laptop at the time but even the low framerate didn't save me from gazing into the abyss. Kinda funny to think back on but it was mildly distressing at the time lmao.

That's interesting that the "Cough Virus" was used to point out flaws in the GMod system. I remember, immediately after September 11th, someone was sending envelopes with a powder in them that turned out to be anthrax. When they tracked down the origin point, it turned out to be a professor who simply wanted to show the government how easy it would be to do such a thing, to show that the postal system was just as prone to such acts as a series of buildings. He didn't actually seem to have malicious intent behind it, but people still could've become ill and/or died as a result, so he was understandably arrested.

To me, gm_construct is a mystery. It's a sandbox map, but try to come up with lore for that map, which is essentially a pit with three buildings, and underground complex and a lake. Kinda strange, innit?

The construct is a program in the matrix used to boot into the main program, it's basically a sandbox itself

Bro it happened. One of the mysteries got solved! the_pit is REAL! The original owner reenabled the map on the steam workshop. It has the proper dates and everything! I saw a link for it 22 days ago. It is in the same thread as the one shown in the video!

I think the unsettling feeling of downtown is nostalgia mixed with the emptiness of playing it alone when you'd usually see tons of other players building bases and fucking around. It's got the same vibe of a liminal space, seeing a nostalgic place that should be full of life/people and no one's around. It ironically followed the same track as liminal spaces with 12 year olds starting to add monsters to the environment to make it even scarier oooOoOoOo black gman ghost

First, great video.. While yes, gmod has some good mysteries, there are games that are twice as old with rumors, mysteries, and weird stuff for longer then gmod has been around. To think it has the most stuff like this means either you really don't have much experience with games from before your time, or you are biased towards gmod. But most importantly, none of these are really a story, just "things that happen all the time in games." And viruses just show what the community and devs will and won't do. Again, great video.

The original pit map has apparently been re-published, about 2 days ago as of the writing of this comment and even reuploaded so it stays up for the foreseeable future. I would post a link to it,but KZbin would just nuke it. But you can look it up for yourself.

13:05 14:00 The German KZbinr (Ragee) announced in one of his videos that he will no longer be making Garry's Mod videos, as he has lost interest in this content. He feels constrained by the constant focus of his channel on Garry's Mod and attributes the cause to the so-called "Garry's Mod kids." For this reason, he has taken all of his Garry's Mod videos offline. I speak German myself and was a fan of (Ragee), which is why I can confirm this from my own experience.

I want to make some addendum on the 13:40 part of the video. The way that Ratlobber said about Gmod addon files now only applies to those addon that were uploaded or didn't receive any updates before the Gmod update on January 2020, where Gmod would change its addon file system from storing them in Gmod's own "addons" folder to Steam's workshop/content/4000 folder. This update increased Gmod's addon file size into up to 2 GB per addon, but also because of this, Steam will now automatically remove the files of the addons that were uploaded or updated after the January 2020 update, either on when you unsubscribed them or if they're gone from the workshop.

I first started playing gmod just after wire mod and therefore the E2 Chip were made. The gman virus was actually made into an E2 code so in a roundabouts way it did exist but was just an E2 code

i remember that the "gman virus" happened to me while i was playing tf2 jailbreak in 2014 - popped up only once, everyone freaked out and had a laugh about it, and i never recalled it happening again. exact same texture personal theory is that it was an obscure admin tool used to prank people, i vagueeelyyy recall that somebody with perms was on when the jumpscare happened. this was in a different game and way after the kitty video, so it very easily could've been inspired by it or the rumors thereafter. has this happened to anyone else? i remember doing a dive and found a steam screenshot of the same thing happening to someone else

There was absolutely another big Gmod virus back in the day back when LUA was first introduced, either late Gmod 8 or Gmod 9 I think? Except it was a proper virus that could fuck up your system files. I remember it being a pretty big deal around the same time people realized they could just spam smokestacks to crash servers. I'm also entirely confident that the GMan virus DID exist, I got hit by that one after installing an addon pack a friend sent me, but I buy the theory that it was made after the KZbin video came out. The timelines would line up. I don't remember it having any effect on my web browser though, it just did the face and the scream.

i remember playing on lifepunch jailbreak (rip) when the cough virus happened. The freaky weirdness of the whole experience remains a pretty fond memory - all standard rules/play for the night froze as everyone on the server chatted about what trojan effects it might have, and watched as more and more servers in the browser gained the !!! tag. The ambiguity of the virus paired with the irl parallels of viruses effecting actual established communities offered a very unique experience.
