If you sift through the garbage, you can find some real gems in the gmod workshop, I saw you show off the map Runaway for a moment which is definitely still my favorite gmod horror map. There was always a haunted house quality to GMod horror maps. Scary but sort of comfy and the closest thing you could get to replicating the harmlessness of Halloween when we were kids. Despite most of them using HL2, Portal and similar assets it's a place where imagination takes hold. It's a lot like the DOOM mapping community. You think it's done but there's always something new out of nowhere. Just look at the recent Lidar phenomenon.

I'm surprised that there doesn't seem to be any mention of gm_ghosthunt or its two sequels, which were all made by Breadman(the guy behind Entropy Zero). These maps were played by some pretty big names around 2012-2013, like Pewdiepie and the Yogscast to name a few. They were and still are some of the best Gmod horror maps imo; really good scripting, a very open-ended level design that allows you to explore at your own pace, and randomized events that made for great replayability. It was neat to see how the experience differed between playthroughs. I'd also like to give a shoutout to gm_paranormal by Steinman and gm_catacombs by Citizen_001. These two maps do a great job of capturing the spirit of the Ghost Hunt maps, with the former being a more linear experience with a specific objective and the latter being slightly less focused on horror with a greater emphasis on traps and puzzles.

I think gmod horror never really had a rise and fall of sorts, sure its absolutely ridden with fnaf horror or gmod liminal stuff (a lot of which is really good and original), but also alongside that people kept making neat and original stuff. 2 of my personal favorites is the 2020 map Autumn 2001, which has a sorta PS1 style to it and has a lot of interesting stuff you can do that leads to different endings, and the more recent Convenience Store Case which at points almost feels like a brand new game. though also seems to be inspired by the likes of Autumn 2001 and maybe a bit of Puppet Combo games.

A lot of old GMod horror maps were pretty lousy as they were very reliant on cheap, loud jumpscares. I do like the latest maps, though, that actually go for a horror vibe and rely on atmosphere and subtly messing with the player (sound of footsteps on an empty server, doors closing by themselves, etc.). The Librarian KZbin channel has some good videos showcasing some of these maps, and he mostly does it in VR.

My favorite underrated horror in gmod is gmod realism. The time where nextbot were getting huge in the gmod community and the premise of a giant uncanny jpeg chasing you in abnormal speed was a hit. Some gmod realism horror videos uses that premise of being chased by an entity in a refreshing take. The videos feel like a short film and it presentation is very well done making you feel anxious, pressured and having to be at the edge of your seat kind of moments. My favorite has to be run and run 2 by astro.

To be fair Horror is ever adapting. The trends we see in horror change all the time as what becomes effective slowly becomes less marketable. We see this in movies, games, and we will most certainly see it in how Gmod and online ARGs are formed. I think there will always be more to come; whether what is to come is good or not will be up for the communities to decide. Gmod horror will evolve into the ever evolving genre that is horror itself.

Dear Ratlobber, I hope this letter finds you well. It has been quite some time since we've last spoken, but I felt compelled to write to you about a matter that has been weighing heavily on my mind. Recently, I was approached by a group of Dacoobers who sent me on a mission to deliver a message to someone named Richter. The message was simple, yet urgent: they wanted him to make a sequel to the motion picture, "Monkeying Around In Half Life 2." As you may recall, this was a fantastic film that starred the beloved Boss Monkey and Clarence, two characters that we all grew to love. However, despite my best efforts, Richter has not responded to any of my messages. I fear that he may have moved on from the project and has no intention of revisiting it. This is a great shame, as I believe that there is still so much potential in the story of Boss Monkey and Clarence. That is why I am reaching out to you, Ratlobber. I know that you were a big fan of the first film, and I believe that you have the power to convince Richter to reconsider his position. We need to bring back Boss Monkey and Clarence and take them back to Denny's, where they belong. We cannot let this story go unfinished. So please, Ratlobber, use your influence and reach out to Richter on our behalf. Let him know how much this film means to us and to the world. With your help, I am confident that we can convince him to make the sequel that we all deserve. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Best regards, Barbecue

My favorites are "ambient horror" where there is little to no combat, & most of the jumpscares are unintentional because you're creeped out. Maybe you'lk find a weapon & be constantly on-guard expecting to use it, but the time never comes. The dread of "if" & "when" something will happen in the silence feels less cheap than a noisy haunted house shooter full of jumpscares you know are coming every 2 minutes.
