If I had to point to a reason why the Adventurer's Club feels so much like a liminal space, it's probably due to the excessive amount of detail in each room coupled with the vast amount of space. Your eyes are always occupied which makes it feel like it's moving (something normally achieved with the lines transitional spaces use) but it's all static and immobile, making it feel off.

2 maps I know well, that are liminal. 1st. Gm_mallparking. It has this lonely feeling, a bit of the after hours aesthetic. And kind of a comfy feeling, but lonely aswell. I love this map. 2: Gm_oldspace. Its a liminal map, like gm_liminal but with SCARES!!!!
@MoreCheezePlease3 жыл бұрын
Yes! Please do gm_mallparking, it feels like visiting a mall that was recently emptied to close, but isn't fully abandoned yet. There are a lot of parking and shipping/receiving areas, but you can get just far enough into mall spaces and offices meant for people to really get that liminal "where are the people?" feel. That, and the many missing cars, minus the few seemingly out of place ones...

It's weird how many no-longer-existing or inaccessible places are now best preserved through Gmod. My personal favourite is ttt_waterworld - a recreation of Leith Waterworld, a leisure pool in Edinburgh, Scotland that I used to go to with my family but got shut down in the early 2010s, with the map even being mentioned on the pool's Wikipedia page. Doesn't hurt that it's a fun map for TTT as well.

I am 100% certain that as a little kid I had at least 3 different dreams based inside of that first map you played, it always had a horror/murder mystery type vibe even though I was the only one inside of the building. I never really explored outside rooms, purely that central one and it was more of a point and click adventure game type beat than walking place to place. I say that specifically because I also remember parts of it being on that railing section that seem to be a floor higher. Wacky stuff.

I will have to try that Adventurers Club one. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I agree about reviving defunct attractions via VR. I feel it would be right up your alley.

Chris Wallace created a 3D VR video recreation of Horizons on KZbin. I've never experienced the real attraction, but this experience is pretty good - similar fidelity to the Adventurer's Club for Garry's Mod. The Adventurer’s Club is a place I wish I was able to go to at an old age. Just to be there and soak in the good times with friends, it just feels right. I can see myself dancing with a lover to Artie Shaw’s Stardust (the music that plays in the library) and just melting away. Every time I try to play a gmod map that is supposed to be a horror map or a liminal space, I end up leaving dissatisfied because they almost always have logic that doesn't work as intended, objectives are unclear, or they're basically just large empty spaces. Spooky environments are cool, but at some point, you realize that the scare you expect to be hiding in the darkness will never come and you lose any fear you might have had. Or the scare is overused and it stops being scary, such as with Room Inc. In defense of liminal maps, they do seem conceptually like they'd be hard to pull off in an interesting way.

The Bicycle is there so workers can get where they need to be quickly. When someone needs to interact with a few boxes that are scattered across the whole archive, a bike with a basket is the cheap and easy solution to make life easier for everyone. You just make it a rule that whoever uses it has to return it to its spot by the entrance when they leave, so it's ready for the next guy; which is why it's where you found it. Walking speed is maybe 4KM/Hr, a bike can do 20KM/Hr or faster without much trouble. It's more than good enough for the job since your speed is limited mainly by your ability to avoid collisions.

And in said observatory, you'd have 2 podiums where the entrance doors would be, but one book would be missing out of the two. (visible by the dust covering...) The only book available will take you back to that room. Same effect and sound. The idea is giving me chills.
