Antenna being on the roof Works better because the entire roof is the ground plane compared to the hood 3:40

Thanks for the comment. I have a 18" VHF on the roof for another radio I have and you are correct , it works perfect. I could just run a UHF stubby because I'm limited in height and I want to run something more than a UHF stubby. I'm trying different setups just to see what's the best compromise.

Thats awesome, that will be a great antenna. The ghost is good for banging around town, going to the carwash, fitting into parking garages and stuff like that but nothing beats a good whip antenna.

@@paulethier3416 I notice you got your Cable shortened on the Antenna Hood Mount - I have that same one, would you happen to know where the PL-259 like the one on the Mount could be purchased? I been searching but no luck so far.

I know that some people say that you don't need a ground plane, I personally I think it helps to launch the radio waves out from around the vehicle!! And no line of site is needed!!!
@StormsRadiosCats11 ай бұрын
Yay! Now it's directional *sigh* Never assume just because the SWR was good when you removed a antenna then re attached it that the swr can't change. You should always check it when making changes even if a shop installed a bracket.

mounting your antenna in that location creates a very directional pattern

Thanks for the comment. I'm a little limited on height that's why I'm looking for different mounts and antennas. I wish I could mount it dead center in the roof but I'm trying to find the best compromise possible.

I’m having my antenna mounted on the roof of my pickup and it’s staying there I’ve done the testing you have done
@paulethier341610 ай бұрын
That’s definitely the best option for sure. I have a VHF on my roof now but I also have a height restriction for a parking garage that I have to use so that’s why I went with the fender mount. Good luck with your set-up. I would like to see a picture of it.

I personally can tell you that these antennas should me permanently mounted in the middle of the roof on a drilled in NMO mount. Believe me I don’t like drilling the roof of my car either so I went with the premium Sti Co antennas that replace your FM radio antenna without loosing the use of the FM antenna. They are REAL expensive but they work and that’s why a lot of Feds use these antennas. Retail they are a rip off but if you have a friend who has a decent wholesale account with a major RF supply company, they can get a decent discount. These antennas were manufactured originally by a company named Antennex. They were later purchased by Larson (now Radial-Larson) Antennas. Now I have installed these on unmarked police cruisers with no issues however the departments involved have multiple receiver sites and whose system can select the best receive antenna and feed that receiver into the transmitter.

You should try turning your car around. When using a corner mount the signal will be stronger toward the opposite corner.

Ok, thank you for that information.

All of my antennas are all on roof top for max range. I like the ghost antenna but its performance not so great unless it's mounted at a high point.

Those hood mounts are truly cringe worthy. Why would anyone want that RF being pumped straight into their retinas, I'll never know. Do yourself a favor, take your car to a local Motorola radio shop and have them install an NMO antenna mount and good quality coax cable. I've done that a few times, with excellent and long-lasting results. Never a problem with leaks or rust, either. 73 de Larry, K3LT

Attach a 5/8th wave for a better signal over the Ghost Antenna.It’s a Ghost because you can’t see that it’s a Poor choice for an antenna and even more so in that location on the vehicle.👎🏻🎙
