Pouchitis is one of the most common complications after J pouch surgery for inflammatory bowel disease. This video describes how we diagnose and treat this condition. I discuss appropriate antibiotics and when probiotic prevention are appropriate. I also discuss Crohn's like disease of the pouch.

I had this surgery. (When it was new-decades ago, first one failed immediately-artery stenosis, 2nd one with a different surgeon turned out great) Pouchitis occurs for me if I get too solid and cant empty regularly. (Im all liquid everyday but had a really good outcome and am fully continent) and its immediately relieved with flagyl. Every time it occurred, after taking 4 doses of flagyl, it was relieved. It took me 1.5 yrs to regain continence. And pouchitis occurred a lot in the first two years. You can tell bc you have a feeling a painful pressure and urge to go constantly to try and get relief(similar to a uti) Great job on being a CR surgeon. Thats a major feat! ❤.
