Hey! Considering how big this video is, I obviously cant go over every detail, that's why we also do 10+ minute videos about individual Pokemon. However, in our usual fashion, we did indeed make some mistakes (not mentioning something is not a mistake for the most part, unless its something integral, rather than additional). So I'll document those by editing this comment. Here they are: -I said grey squirrels came to the UK from mainland Europe, they actually came to the UK AND the mainland from North America. -One of the "Anacondas" shown was actually a reticulated python. Also Sandaconda's nose is a double-barreled shotgun, which were invented by Joseph Manton, an English man. -Major forgot to mention some of the more important Fossilmon details, (which are being covered in their own video) But the big one for now is that Arcto COULD be from a Mosasaur or Ichthyosaur, but I'm leaning more towards the Arctophoca / Arcophoca. Which is a prehistoric seal. Notably, even the Mosasaur and Ichthyosaur are NOT actually dinosaurs. Just like that seal/walrus. -Galarian Stunfisk actually reflects the idea that beartraps were originally intended for humans, as its mouth is a Pokeball, acting similarly to Foongus and Voltorb as Pokeball-mimics. - The Penguin hockey team we mentioned IS in the UK, but we used the wrong logo, its the logo of an American team. also while we're here: the word "Penguin" actually comes from Welsh, meaning "White Head" -The Japanese word for 'snowman' translates to 'snow daruma,' daruma dolls being what darmanitan was already based on. Making the connection with snow.

The rune on stonjourner looks straight up like Ingwaz to me. It is also sometimes called Ing and can look a couple other ways. It mainly represents a god called Freyr-Yngvi, which is Old Norse for Lord Yngvi. His title is often shortened to just Freyr, meaning Lord. He is one of Odin's sons, a fertility god, and supposedly the ancestor to a Swedish royal family. Aside from that, the rune symbolizes rest (stand around a lot), a deep connection with the Earth (made of stones), secrets (mysteriously gather), and a time when one must move forward with something (able literally move around). It also symbolizes some other things like home, family love, life, fertility in men, and a sound like a quick ng, but I don't see how any of this symbolism is connected to stonjourner.

Important note for Eternatus: While Eternamax Eternatus is obviously a hand it's also a Hydra. The "fingers" open at the end when Eternatus attacks, making it look like a 5-headed snake. This is fitting as Hydras have eternally regenerating heads (until they're burnt) This also helps explain its type, as Hydras were dragon-like creatures with very dangerous acid/venom in Greek legends.

Snake enthusiast here! I’d like to speculate that Silicobra is based on false cobras, specifically the Egyptian false cobra because of its desert origins. The “false” connection also makes sense since Silicobra isn’t poison type, only looking like a cobra to trick predators into thinking it is; most false cobras aren’t truly venomous, either, and any venom they do have is usually mild compared to that of the cobras they mimic. As for Silicobra and Sandaconda’s subtle shiny forms, I like to think they’re inspired by the axanthic morph of some snakes-which basically leaves you with a washed out, grayscale snake. And one more thing I just wanted to point out. I hate to be that person, but the snake on the right at 13:04 is a ball python. They’re sweet little things that only get to be 5-6 feet tops, as opposed to anacondas that grow to around 20 feet. 😅

"Eternatus" is the symbolic representation of the eternal life, death, and rebirth cycle known as Ouroboros, which is why you get "born again" from its name. Eternatus' dragon typing and appearance references the the Ouroboros' depiction of a snake or a serpent devouring its own tail. There is an interesting duality in zacian and zamazenta. the Pokedex refers to them as being either siblings or rivals, being unclear as to which is true (I personally think it's both). Furthermore, the game seems to imply that they are different genders, as zacian's shield Pokedex entry claims that zacian is the elder sister to zamazenta, meaning that zacian is female. This makes sense when comparing their typings and designs. Zacian has mainly smooth curves that contribute to a "sleek" look (something common among female creatures in media), not to mention the rather feminine typing of fairy and how the "hero of many battles" having the long braids and prominent markings near the eyes. This differs greatly from zamazenta's much spikier, almost always plated look, along with the masculine type of fighting, the cape-like mane present in "crowned shield" form, and the ponytail reminiscent of the stereotypical plumage on a knight's helmet. This is of course without considering the implications of their titles of "the fairy king's sword" and "the fighting master's shield," which is an entirely different rabbit hole

Zacian and Zamazenta's seemingly ghostly appearance at the start of the game and emerging from Burial Mounds to to save Galar in its "Darkest Day" is a reference to King Arthur's title as the Once and Future King, as it is said that he will one day return in England's darkest hour to save it. The Fairy King's Sword is likely a reference to the fact that he leads the Wild Hunt in death. Wheras the Fighting Master's Shield is likely due to being a Warrior King in life? And a Red Dragon was his symbol. They called him Pendragon, after all.

14:00 one quick additional note on penguins tying them to the UK- they were named by a british naturalist misunderstanding some of his welsh crewmen! The story goes that on the voyage where penguins were first documented, he heard the crew talking about the "pin guin", and when he looked where they were pointing, he saw the birds, so he figured the crew knew what they were and that was the name, so that's what he wrote and presented to the Royal Academy upon their return. However, "pin guin" in welsh actually means something along the lines of "white mountains", the things the birds were standing on, and what the crewmen were actually talking about. So, a welsh word overheard, misunderstood, and written by an British naturalist is how we get the name "Penguin"

Another one of Eternatus' themes is that of fossil fuels and how unsustainable they are - it is literally a skeleton being used to power the human world, and something that was done ages ago, too. This was super informative! I was surprised at all the historical details in many of these pokemon c: As for additional info, here's some fun titbits I can offer. They're just little things i picked up on as I played, as a native Englishman c: And I know I'm way late to the party, but no harm throwing this out there, right? --- An NPC has a line regarding Corviknights, saying that there's a legend that if they were to leave Galar, something awful would occur. This is a reference to a prophecy made about the Tower of London which claims that if the captive ravens left it's grounds, the country and crown would fall. As such, six ravens are kept there at all times! A reason for Falinks being a squad and not a single pokemon could be a reference to the Lost Legion/Ninth Legion, a group of Roman Soldiers who were last documented in the UK but then vanished without a trace from Roman book-keeping. It's often thought they either died in battle or settled down permanently in Britain. Regarding 'Why two wolves?' with the legendary wolves, there is a story in the UK that might relate to them of a dragon-slayer. Simply put, the story goes that a dragon slayer, who kept two dogs as companions and partners, was tasked with killing a dragon that was causing chaos. The man was successful, but his two dogs perished in the effort. He buried them at a hill and retired, basically staying by their graves til he himself passed. Eternatus has shades of Welsh myth around it too. The iconic Red Dragon of Wales was once trapped underground after fighting with a white dragon - the people sealed them there to try and contain the fight. Eventually the submerged dragons caused earthquakes as they kept fighting, until Merlin of King Arthur mythos commanded the dragons be released. The Red Dragon won the battle upon being released. Makes me think of how Eternatus was trapped under the ground but it's power seeped through to the land above.

Just a few observations. 1) Grookey's evolution being musical primates could be a reference to the bands "The Monkees" and Gorillaz who were British-American and British respectively. 2) Orbeetle - Ladybugs are massively popular and cherished in the UK. So much so that the UK has their own name for them; Ladybirds. they're often bought by farmers to reduce populations and are a beloved bug. Seriously, no one is frightened of these guys. Funny you mention Penguin publishing because a print of books for young Children they have is "Ladybird". 3) Another reason for Zacian and Zamazenta being wolves is that the British Isles had wolves but they've been extinct for hundreds of years. 4) Yamper evolving into Bolthund may be a joke. Whilst the Royal family is one of the most British things, the branch we see today originate from Hannover, Germany. 5) Eiscue may also draw some imagery from pool/snooker cues with their blue heads being what you see when you rub a block of blue chalk on the head. 6) Hatterene could be a reference to how the iconography of the witch in her clothes and hair has covered up the original concept of witches, notably midwives and "kind women" of villages who were declared witches by those who had stillborns under their care among other reasons. I will say I dislike Hattrem considering she hits people for expressing strong emotion. Essentially, never invite her to birthdays, funerals, weddings, bat mitzvahs, rallies in Northern Ireland about why certain laws haven't changed like the rest of the UK and never have them around if you're a psychiatrist. Falinks is precious and the gender neutral thing is a nice touch fighting with their brothers and sisters in arms. I am surprised neither Swanna or Chansey made it into these games. Swans are legally owned by the queen and hurting one is STILL a criminal offense. Chansey would also make sense as the UK has been known for pioneering Nursing and midwifery.

It's kind of weird how every region except Kanto and Jotho has a desert in it, right?
@Seelenfisch4 жыл бұрын
@@RokuroCarisu What are you even talking about? Only three regions feature deserts in them: Hoenn, Unova and Galar. The one in Unova makes sense, as Death Valley, one of the hottest deserts in the World, is in the United States. Galar has a tiny desert in the north of the wild area, which makes no sense, as the UK doesn't have any deserts. The desert in Hoenn makes also absolutely no sense, as neither Kyushu (which Hoenn is based on) nor the rest of Japan have any deserts. No other region besides the one mentioned have any deserts.

Morpeko is a Hamster, which there are wild hamsters in Europe. Bolthund is a Fox Hound, especially obvious when you read its Pokedex entry saying how it is an enemy of Thievul. Toxtricity's typing is a reference to batteries, which are filled with caustic chemicals to generate an electric current. (seriously battery acid is dangerous stuff)

Just chiming in about frostmoth , The moth you were talking about weren't turning black due to polution , but the tree they live on have have withe bark , the pollution blackening the bark made the wither moth more visible to predator ( ie birds) , so by mean of natural selection ( see 5th grade biology class) the darker moth were selected , you can link this phenomena with frostmoth reaction to people poluting , making them less likely to survive , it's nice to see pokemon reference one of the classic case for évolution in pokemon.
@j.hindle92434 жыл бұрын
We did a case study on the peppered moth for biology, this is correct. It’s a brilliant example of how natural selection and human interference leads to developments in species which wouldn’t have happened otherwise!
