I watched SISU, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Its nice to see a hero who went through hardship and doesn't make a public spectacle about his victimhood. Aatami Korpi is his name. The Russians called him Koschei, which doesn't actually mean "Immortal" but "Koschei the Deathless" (or Immortal) is a villain character from Russian folklore who is deathless because he hides his soul nested within various objects. It is very similar to John Wick being called "Baba Yaga," who is a famous Russian witch (actually female so Koschei would have been better for Wick). In at least one tale the hero has to seek help from the dangerous Baba Yaga to fight Koschei after he abducts his wife. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has used both of them in Hellboy related stories.

As a Finn and as a scriptwriter/director by education I love to see Sisu having international appreciation! Finnish film making is extremely practical 'cause we don't have access to those Hollywood budgeds and in my personal opinion it's the superior way to make cinema as it forces to be creative and the script well enough to let the story carry. Btw, Sisu as a term is maybe best described as Cold will or unyielding determination.

As for the meaning of "sisu", you got it right. It's the spirit of gumption and perseverance. It's an old Finnish word, so there's not necessarily a perfect translation in other languages, but I think the English use for "grit" comes close. Etymologically it's the same as saying someone "has guts", as the word "sisu" is related to the finnish words "sisus" or "sisällä", which mean "inside" or "in". Meaning, someone who has sisu is not just "an empty sack" of a person, but someone who has "that something" that makes them go and keeps them going, indeed they have "spirit".

It’s in so far based on a true story in that Germans were fighting Finns in 1944 in Lapland. Finland was originally an ally of Germany, but it did make peace with the allies in 1944. But there were still German soldiers in Lapland at that time (fighting the Soviet Union and protecting some mines). Despite the Germans agreeing to leave peacefully, did the situation under pressure from the Soviet Union lead to an open war in which the Germans used a scorched earth tactic.

I have to agree with you mate. By the end of the movie I was awed. When the girls walked out of the smoke my heart soared.

The wife and I went to see it opening weekend on Sunday. There were about 6 - 8 of us in the theater. So not quite as bad as yours. :) But yeah, it was amazing! I had a little issue with the plane crash. I think it would have made more sense if it had been more of a skid than a slam. But other than that, I could not recommend it enough.

I think they implied that it hit a bog and that saved him but yes, that was the most unbelievable part of the movie. My wife hated the way the plane crashed and said had it skidded in that it would have been more grounded in reality.

The trailer for The Outlaw Johnny Black (2023) also dropped. Even the TRAILER pokes fun at how many genre blends the movie incorporated in itself (it makes fun of the trend of genre blends by adding as many as it possibly can get away). It started in 2018 with crowdfunding, if memory serves. Also, The Secret Kingdom (2023) also dropped a trailer. Its CGI looks good for a lesser known entry, and it's just a straight up kids movie, which is rare these days.

Saw it last weekend. Loved it! The only downside was the final fight was a bit weak, but still a hell of a ride overall. Lots of fun. Well-made movie.

Second positive review from someone I trust about how good this is. It’s at my town’s theater, and not at my favorite theater and nowhere else close. So, going to break my boycott of my town’s theater, which just has so many things wrong with it, that I haven’t gone to see a movie there (with one other exception) in over five years. But I will see this there. Thanks, Gary.

The young german tank driver who gets shot dead towards the end is the actual real life son of the main character Aatami Korpi (actual name of the actor is Jorma Tommila and his son is Onni Tommi) also Jorma is the brother-in-law of the director Jalmari Helander

Give The Head Hunter a try it's a fantasy horror from 2018 about an armoured Knight living in forest hunting the creature that killed his daughter, there's almost no dialogue and it's the opposite of what Hollywood is making

My friends and I knew we wanted to see this when we saw the trailer weeks ago, and WE F'ING LOVED IT! Yes, it's over the top in many places, but apart from meting out devastating violence to Russians, Nasties (or can we say Nazis now?) make a good substitute. You go, Aatami! Never give up! Never surrender! Yeah!

Finnish man here, definitely check this movie out! Sisu translates as courage, just look at what we did to the Vikings and later the Russians during the winter war.
