I rocked my 2 year old stepdaughter every single night, singing this song to her, 20+ years ago. She never wanted to go to sleep, and I had a big rocker that had belonged to my grandmother. When she was a teenager, she asked me once, "Remember when you used to rock me?". Oh, I do! It was one of my favorite times in the whole world. I had no kids of my own. She was my only baby.

At my age, (58 yrs) I'm sorry to say that I've never heard of Gillian Welch. However, her brilliant talent combined with the incomparable vocal gifts from God in Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss in this rendition is just ethereal platinum magic. I got so very swept up listening to it that there's no wonder the Cohen bros. chose to use it for their crazy-good movie.

Actually..... Gillian and Emmy Lou have done it together live a few times I saw, or got a recording of. Alison was not at the Fests.. so...we missed out on her. Technically "Bluegrass" will have instruments. This? It's old time folk/gospel/appalacian. Emmy, Gillian, Alison are elite at doing Harmony. About all that's missing is Linda Ronstadt who'd done great harmony with Emmy.

Perhaps, but it’s not far off from Scottish and Irish folk songs that were brought over. It’s got more “soul” infusion. But most of bluegrass is straight up Celtic music with an American south vocal inflection.

I’ve been listening to the movie’s soundtrack since I was 6-7 years old. Every morning my dad would play it while driving us to school and I loved this song (along with down to the river to pray). I miss those mornings sometimes, I eventually saw the movie in high school and it made my day.

@Mrhootie33311 жыл бұрын
The song was written by singer/songwriter Gillian Welch who specializes in dark themed songs. She wrote this one based on a one verse song. I got this from her biography. In spring of 1999, T Bone Burnett came to Nashville to record the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? At T Bone’s suggestion, Gillian wrote the Siren song "Didn’t Leave Nobody But the Baby", based on a single verse of a traditional lullaby.

My mother sang a version of this song to me when I was little. The lyrics don't make much sense, but they were "Go to sleep you little baby, go to sleep you little baby, and when you wake I'll bake you a cake with all the pretty little horses. One is black, and one is white, and one is the color of molasses. So go to sleep you little baby..." It just repeats from there. I always imagined a cake decorated with horses, like a carousel.
@Caldella8 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your mom blended it a bit with "All the Pretty Little Horses." Not quite the same, but the naming horse colors is similar.
@conroecurio51458 жыл бұрын
omg my grand ma and mom sang that too me too..mine was: go to sleep you little baby ,when you wake we'll patty patty cake and ride all the colored little horses, some will be pink and some will be white and some will be all the colors of molasses ,to go to sleep you little baby... and then repeat, also "O'danny boy" and "loch Lomond" my mother's great grandpa was from Aberdeen Scotland.. my dad's side west Virginia then England. oh and there was one about an ELF " I met a little elf man one day down where the lilies bloom, I asked him why he was so small and why he did not grow , he quietly looked me up and down and then he said to me, I'm quite as big for me says he, as you are big for you" ( that was it ha ha)
