Slaves used songs with hidden messages to be interpreted either by puzzling with it, or by certain expressions they used, to share messages without the people holding the whip would know about it, or what it meant. Sorry guys, but I wanted to make sure that I got all the lyrics correct. We are here in GA having our Family Labor Day celebration. While beginning the festivities with our annual fish fry, I asked two of my great-aunts (89 and 94 year olds) about the song. One of them recoiled and the other went straight into it. I played the video for them and they looked at me funny. LOL!!! Once the three of us started singing it, like 5 or 6 cousins (47-73 year olds) came over and started singing with us. Too cool! Apparently, my great-grandma either did some editing or she didn't remember all the words. We worked together and got them all. Surprisingly, my teen cousins were both entertained and shocked by the discussion about the meanings of the lyrics and have now learned it.

They said that it was about a slave that stole something. They killed his wife/partner who had a baby not too long after they were searching for him. This is kind of a mean lullaby that they would sing to taunt or threaten the slaves not to run away or thieve. The way we sing it is a bit faster. Some said that it isn't really a lullaby, but more of a popular song that men used to sing doing field or rail work. Thoughts?

This is the soundtrack I listened to on repeat when I was in labor with my son 19 1/2 years ago. This song will always remind me of that night.

Wow, acapella harmonies so sweet and unadorned. There is no where to hide if you don't do it perfectly, and they do.

I've loved this song since I heard it the first time when I was ten, maybe twelve, years old. And here I am now at 33, singing it to my eighteen month old son, watching the comfort of my voice and the soothing beauty of their voices lull him off to sleep so deep he's snoring. 💚💚 I believe one would be hard pressed to find another trio that could top their rendition, it's so purely beautiful.

That’s so funny I’ve also loved this song since I was about 10 or 11 I’m now 32 and am currently singing it to my 18 month old son. Love and light to you and your baby!!😊

This is funny because it’s the exact same for me. Heard it around 10 or 11 maybe and sung it ever since. Now I’m 32 and it is one that I often sing working around the house, etc.
