All the Alan Murphy fans commenting is really neat to me. He was amazing... The funny thing is I had no idea who he was in the 80's, just liked "whoever that guy playing guitar is" it was later in life when I started playing bass that I learned. Just amazing. That call and answer interplay at the end of Innocence is amazing...

What great times they were. A beautiful sweet-spot in history before mobile phones and social media arrived and removed the simple fun out of everything, and began the destruction of society as we know it. Treasure those memories.

Innocence, the Bangs and Crashes version, is my favourite pop/rock song of all time. I have a few other favourites, like Highway Star, but equal, not above. Driving, singing along with Peter Cox and listening to Alan Murphy, my daughter (who has a great voice) singing with me, full lungs, full voice, is always, always a rush. We lost Alan Murphy way too early and I wonder what Go West could have achieved, if only in terms of delighting me, if Cox, Drummie and Murphy had spent decades together. Together, as you can see here, they were magnificent and great, great entertainment.

Alan Murphy was a guitar genius. Haven't seen this clip before so thanks for sharing. Check out his work with SFX. I was a keyboard session player in the '80s (and played with Alan a few times) and my idea of perfection would have been playing in that band! Legends all. Tony Beard also on drums for a lot of their work.

I've seen a lot of the worlds greatest drummers over the years, from Bill Bruford to Tony Williams, Vinnie and Weckl. But no one has blown me away more than Tony Beard! It was 85 or 86 and I so Go West perform at a small theatre on the campus of Brown University in Providence, RI. I had never heard of Tony before this night and I knew one bar into the first tune that he was a special player! Groove, energy, power, and unbelievable chops! Different chops though, this was a bit before Weckl came on the scene and blew every drummer away with his "new" style of playing! I was about 25 back then, and in the 30 plus years since then I often think back to that special night.

I was the keys tech on this tour. (That's me at 10.37 loading the Emulator discs up for Pete Vettese) Originally it was planned only to do a couple of numbers, but there was a risk of an electricians strike on broadcast, so the entire set was recorded on the Thursday night previous in case, and as it happened, the plug got pulled so Go West got to do half that nights show. I guess it would have been around December 1985, the last show of the tour.

The one thing that strikes me from re-watching this after many years is that Peter Cox and Richard Drummie have a serious love in to the detriment of the band- especially Alan Murphy, who is totally the main man in the band. It's embarrassing watching Richard Drummie go through the motions miming guitar when it's totally obvious that Alan is wrapping his skills around the track (and indeed the band). Look for the chemistry between the two skilled artists in this set up, Peter and Alan.. but don't take too long as there is none. Can anyone actually hear what Richard Drummie is doing? I suspect his guitar isn't even plugged in.

Not his clean glassy tone, that's spot on, his lead sound in the solo to Don't Look Down from 8:09, when he starts to use the trem, it warbles and you can hear shrill, fuzzy overtones when he lifts the bar. He used a Fender Champ for solos, small/brittle sound, cuts thru the mix great with post EQ, but not live. If you can't hear that then you have shit ears, or you haven't listened to the album version enough.
@matttaylor4618
@matttaylor4618 10 жыл бұрын
***** I disagree. The Aria Esprit was one of his main guitars during Go West and while I can't be sure if he used it on the album, I would say his tone here is being coloured due to the power amps that are boosting his signal because of the low output of the champ. It's all subjective anyway, maybe he liked it that way. I was just pointing out that it is quite different to the sound on the record and not to my taste.
@TryptychUK
