I think I 'got' her upon hearing the very first chord of "Deeper Understanding". She's a different type of artist for sure. I love how she always took such wild chances. When Hounds of Love came out and "Running Up That Hill" was getting airplay I was totally amazed at the sound she was getting. I loved virtually every track on that album and still occasionally play it. I bought her previous work and it was obvious how she got signed, the talent was obvious from the start. I know that a lot of people today will never "get" Wuthering Heights, or Babooshka, or even Army Dreaming, but they were really good. She was featured in Keyboard magazine, and I still remember that awesome picture of her sitting in front of her Fairlight, looking like the interviewers showed up early and woke her up... The song "This Woman's Work" was featured in the Kevin Bacon movie "She's Having A Baby" at a critical moment in the film, and is guaranteed to choke you up every time.

I admit that I was also a bit smitten with her absolute beauty. And the way she could pop her eyes!! My favorites of hers are "Wow" (knocks me out that a musical artist should write a song about the humiliations and rigors of trying to make it as an actor) and "Sat In Your Lap" (bizarre, frenetic song -- about acquiring knowledge! -- with wild music video). I recall hearing, long ago, "Running Up That Hill" on the radio ... which charted briefly here in the states. Of course nobody here knew how utterly great she was. In my never-to-be-humble opinion, Kate can knock Madonna of the charts whenever she wants.

I remember taking half a day off work when the tickets went on sale and queueing outside the Empire for ages (well before the days of buying tickets online). My wife (a Kate look-a-like) still has the concert programme which cost - wait for it - £1. Ten years ago, she was offered £250 for it. If only we'd have bought a few on the night. They are extremely rare and sought-after, those original concert programmes. Of course, she didn't sell it. All great memories of an awesome performer. Kate Bush, fretless vocals? I have Kate Bush on vinyl, awesome! When I was a youth I listened to Dead Kennedys, Skinny Puppy and Kate Bush a.o. I actually still do! The masterpiece of Kate is imho the b-side of Hounds of Love, just epic. Must have album. Never forgotten? I think it was called Never for Ever.

Hounds Of Love's B-side... Wasn't that the old sea shanty, 'Handsome Cabin Boy"?

Yes it was Never Forever, why I said never forgotten I have no idea, but it is ironic!

Fil, as always a great analysis of the song and of the artist. I enjoy hearing about the backgrounds of the artists you select which make me enjoy and appreciate their music even more. The thumbnail sketches you provide are very, very interesting. Thank you!!

I totally agree with Gary . When I first heard this I felt bewitched and enchanted. It blew me away . I was about 15 . I got The Kick Inside album for my 16th birthday. I adore her . And so does my husband ! She's got it all . 🧜♀️♡♡ I am glad you reviewed this . True artist indeed . I used to copy her look too .

As a teenager, hated this song on it's release, now in my fifties I appreciate the unique talent that is Kate Bush... She is an enigma and under appreciated... More should know her and of the body of work she has produced... Also a very strikingly beautiful woman, I may not have appreciated her music as a teen but I always knew how stunning she was...

Fil Thank you so much for this deep dive into Kate Bush. Although I wasn’t born until 18 years after her debut, Kate Bush is my all time favorite female artist. I was tickled by your insight into her “crazy album”, The Dreaming. I never imagined it was one of her lesser regarded works as it’s my favorite by FAR. Great work as always and also, still love your hair. Rock!

Yes, the late, great Alan Murphy on guitar here, though it was another great player, Ian Bairnson (Pilot, Alan Parsons Project) on the record, with Pilot singer/bassist David Paton on acoustic guitar, and producer Andrew Powell on the bass.

I really appreciate Kate more now after your analysis of her and this song. I first heard it when Pat Benetar put it on Crimes of Passion. It was my favorite song from that album. I would love to see you do an analysis of Pat's voice using this song.

Stuck this as on a Kate Bush blackhole and I've seen a few of your videos a good while ago. You have a great overall appreciation of Kate Bush and loads of interesting facts over her career. Never heard the one about Peter Gabriel originally asking Dolly Parton to do Don't Give Up; that's especially mind boggling! Have to admit I still can't help hearing your voice as a 80s Radio One DJ, but your delivery is incredibly fluent and genuine (a rare thing on these things), so very much appreciate your knowledge and understanding of music - great video, thanks!

What a fabulous analysis Fil. Probably enjoyed this one the best. Lots of great information about such a unique artiste. She was one of my favourites and I got to see her perform live too 🤩

..and, on top of ALL that, this performance is at the end of a long show and she is exhausted, and still powered through it, she is just fantastic, a more wondrous creature there has never been, it just brings tears thinking about it...

Yes, pure genius. "Mother" of contemporary singers like Bjoerk, Aurora, Billie Eilish and many, many more. Female singing, after her, could no longer been the same as before. And yes, each of us wanted to be this legendary double bass :)

Great video of a great performer. In another interview, Kate shared that her desire to sing and move at the same time prompted the sound engineer for the show to construct a head mic using a coat hanger, because head mics didn't really exist at the time. If that original coat hanger still exists, it would be quit the collectors item. Peter Gabriel's 'Don't Give up' recording with Kate Bush is superlative, as is his performance of the song with Paula Cole on the 'Secret World Live' DVD. It is unthinkable of me to suggest that one of these women performs the song better than the other. Both are perfect. Both are deeply. deeply moving. I think Paula took a lot of inspiration from Kate, because she says "You worry too much" with the exact same tone and inflection as Kate did in the original recording, but she made the singing parts her own.
