We talk about the details of performing a gage R&R study, but it's also good to remember why we're actually going through all the trouble. When you better understand what you're trying to achieve with any tool, you'll be able to use it better as well.
Gage R&R is part of the measurement systems analysis toolkit - all meant to check if your measurement equipment and the procedures you've set up around them are suitable for your processes: do they give you the right information to steer those processes and/or scrap defect products?
A big part of 'correct' measurement is that you get the same result every time you measure the same part, no matter the person doing the measuring, the time of day, or which of the machines you use (if you've got multiple measuring devices for the same purpose). Gage R&R is a great tool to determine this precision (accuracy is determined with calibration, precision with R&R or Kappa).
But we don't expect our measurement systems to have 100% precision - it depends on what we need to know to steer the process. The best rule of thumb is that you want your measurement system to have a precision that is not much more than 10% of the specification (or tolerance) range.
