try it again on a cloudy day, mppt is meant for days when the sun isn't as powerful. You won't see the 40% difference until you have a day like that to test with. Many times the PWM controller will not have enough volts and pull 0 watts and can't start a charge where as the mppt will.... But on clear sunny days PWM can be equal in efficiency depending on the power source...

If you're using monocrystal panels on a sunny cold, freezing weather day, MPPT will give you much more power than a warm day.

If I'm not mistaken all of these units slow down as you reach near full capacity. Why don't you try this test with your battery down to about 60% and see if there is an increase in charging. Also if I'm not mistaken another purpose for this device is to allow you to use more solar panel input then what the original unit was meant for.

Mppt come in handy the lower the battery is since it convert all of the power to the right charge voltage. Pwm is just “cutting off” the top voltage to make it fit the battery level... so when chargin from 0 to 50% mppt is a lot more effective then the pwm. At 50-80% it’s still better, an for the last 10-20% your are only gaining a small advantage of maybe 15% more power when you are using a 20v inverter. If the inverter was the same w, but at 15v the pwm would be more efficient

Yes, and battery degradation now is effect. Especially on 400w goal zero that only charges up to 73%. I’ve tried to take out battery to install a new one but have been unsuccessful. I’m going to look into a replacement unit from another brand that allows for lithium batt replacement.

have 2x 15 watt panels and 2x 30 watt(older goal zero) the yeti 150 and non lithium 400, just purchased new batteries for both of them since the 150 isn't deep cycle that will be a nice upgrade, one day ill have to get with the program and buy the bigger stuff like this.

I was pretty impressed with your output from the panel, as the max W would probably only be achieved in full sun, with the panel at the right angle, so 112W mounted flat on a panel with some pollen on is pretty good. You got 15-18% extra from the MPPT, and as your battery was already over 80% this is pretty good. If you want Max solar output from your panel keep it all clean, any dirty patches (or any shading) bring the output of the whole panel down.

Pretty cool setup and I wish I have one just in case the power goes out and I can set it up with the solar panels outside or charge it on the gas generator if don't have solar panels. Also don't really mind with the wait on how long it takes and also the mpp is suitable for the solar panels on a 100% sunny day. But also make sure the adapters don't get too hot if the generator is below 15-20% may pull more power may case adapters to work even harder and gets hot. But anyway love the review about this technology. ( P.S also noted if more chargers are connected the fan will kick in and yea that is when the adapters will get even hoter )

You might want to check out Todd Parker on KZbin. He found a way to add more power to the Yeti without damaging it. He uses the car charger with another battery. About fast charging? Fast charging will shorten the life of those. Do some research; Will Prowse. You might also want to check out Will Prowse vid on longevity of lithium. I own a 3000 and after three years and four months it still charges up to ninety six percent.

@@kenjboyd6233 Thanks for replying. I respectfully disagree. The Yetis batts are made of Nickel manganese cobalt oxide ,NMC. They are of a different composition than the Lithium Phosphate 4 ones. The are both good if you know how to use them. You can fast charge NMC but it is advisable to do it during emergency and during black outs. The slower you charge them the less the degradation. There are many internal components wich Prowse knows about and there are also distinctive chemical reactions with every kind of lithium batteries. Understanding the movement of the electrons thru the graphite towards the positive then thru the circuit that draws is crucial. I don't think Todd have approached info like this. Even though I have the pleasure of chatting with Todd. He has really good ideas that can save thousands of dollars expanding the Yetis capacity. Respectfully yours Agustin from Puerto Rico. Plus, Will has a great depth of knowledge re: these issues, but he's far from perfect, & he definitely hasn't spent the time w/ Yeti 1000 Lithiums (to be specific, as I have 4 of those models). And you have stated yourself that Todd has pulled off things w/ this model that I haven't seen Will or anyone else do, including anyone at GZ. Yetis overall, I'm not sure. There are a lot of different models now.. BTW, if English is your 2nd language, I wouldn't have suspected it, as you have mastered it! Spanish is my second language, but I will never be near as fluent as you are in English. And you are obviously quite knowledgeable on these topics, so I'm interested in anything you have to say.

Please read this up to 40% better is from solar panel not from AC plug.: MPPT stands for Maximum Power Point Tracker. The Solar Charging Optimization Module is an external MPPT and when installed properly, actively monitors the energy source you’re using to charge the Goal Zero Yeti Lithium and optimizes the source to maximize power, resulting in up to 40% faster charge times, especially from solar panels. You may also notice better charge times from AC when utilizing the Yeti Lithium’s AC charging cable plugged into the module.

40% is probably calculated when you charge it from 0% up. Your battery was charged over 80% already, and most Lithium Ion batteries have slower charging speeds from 80% on.

Yes you can plug it right in, As the yeti has a built in controller. Just make sure the polarity is correct as zamp is known to have opposite polarity.

The MPPT controller will give you better overall performance on a full day, particularly in lower or filtered light conditions. Your panels will be charging your battery in early morning & later in the evening with the MPPT.

The mpg is doing what it’s made to do. You will need to optimize your solar and make sure it’s sunny. And facing the sun.

I think the panel isn't working at the 165W it is rated for because it's just laying flat on top of the van. You'd need to have it angled at the sun if you wanted to get the most out of it and even then you'll probably see 140W ish at most since the panels are rated for tests in lab conditions.

Mppt is most efficiënt at the bottom charge of the battery. If your battery is at 10% charge there should be a huge difference between the mppt and pwm wattage.

Okay dumb question, can you have the MPPT controller and the yeti link expansion module both installed, or just 1 device at a time? Im debating on expanding my battery bank, or getting more solar panels.

Christy McGrady No you cannot have them both installed at the same time as they both use the same slot in the Yeti. So it’s either one or the other, although the Link does have an 8mm port so you can either add another wall outlet cord or I believe you can add solar panels With 8mm male adapter .

I spoke to Goal Zero and they told me that the 8mm input PWM van take 10 amps while the anderson MPPT input can take up to 30 amps. so 200w/ 12v=16amps.

​@@magamike1800 8mm charge port 14/22volt up to 10amps ie 120watts max. So 2x would be 240watts. (brick plug and outside port.) There is a USB C with PD (power deliver aka in and out.) which pumps 60watts Via 5,12,20v up to 3amps. (could be used also to charge it possible.) Powerpole charging port 14/22volts up to 30amps (360watts). So if we take into all ports used to charge the unit VIA the PWM charging system only on the unit. 240+60+360= 660watts in total you could push into the unit. Now if we look at the MPPT with 3x more ports. 8mm x2 have 15/22volt at 10amps = 150watts x 2 = 300watts. Power Pole Charging port 15/22volts at (doesn't show on their website. but IE divided 1400 x 5hours = 280watts. So the Power pole would probably pull around 300-600watts on it's own.). So you'd get 600watts from PWM or MPPT. (Not sure if you can mix and charge. but if you could then you'd get up to 1200watts of incoming power. Enough to run AC and DC while keeping it topped, So you could technically use it like a multipower system in a large area your using to charge laptop, and DC stuff like Phone, lights,etc.)

​@@magamike1800 told you the EXACT specs of the system it can handle. 14volts LOW. the LEAST you should be putting in. and 22volts THE MAX you can put in. 14/22volts. So common sense of 38volts = No. Even if you TRIED, It'd shutdown the charging and beep = that it will NOT take such a high voltage. If you can find a way to decrease the 38volt panel down to the LEAST or MAX input related of the system. Then you can. But you'd have to DROP the voltage down massively.

The battery will take more input when it is low. Since its almost fully charged, you wont be seeing a 40 percent increase. As the battery nears capacity charging slows to prolong battery life. I wont get into it, but physics comes into play here as well

I have some issues with my goal zero lithium 1000+ the MPPT controller. I use one 20w nomad solar panel + 100w Boulder panel chained together. Every few weeks my Batterie is not charging anymore (blue light on the controller input is on the one on the batterie not) I found out that when I disconnect the batterie cables and put them on again it works again. What could that be? I asked already GoalZero and they told me to send it in, which takes more than few weeks to get it back.

Somewhere here on KZbin I saw a young man who had a Goal Zero 400, I believe, plug a cheap $15 inverter into it, plugged that into his car cig. lighter, and the Goal Zero charged within minutes, not hours. Is there anyone out there who might explain that to an old woman who wants to be able to camp off grid with a Goal Zero and a 100W solar panel? Why would I want an MPPT which isn't that great at charging the Goal Zero if a cheap inverter would give much greater speed in recharging?

tegma when charging with solar moot us moot faster than pwm. As far as charging through a standard wall outlet you don’t get that much more charging power. Charging through 12v with and inverter(lets say in your car cig lighter) so you can charge using your std 110 plug you should not see a difference. But if you use just the 12v charger port from your car then it will take longer to charge. As far as it taking just minutes on a goal zero 400 it’s not doable. Now if I was going to try to get by with a GZ400 I would get the lithium version because the battery on that one can be depleted to 0 without harming the lifespan of the battery. Now if you go with the AGM GZ400 you shouldn’t take that battery below 50% as it will kill your battery in no time as AGM’s are not made to be taken all the way down to zero. (no the actual goal zero, just the battery inside it). Currently on the AGM style GZ400 you can daisy chain additional batteries to it for additional battery. If you have the room it’s a lil cheaper to do this option. Oh yeah, mppt is not offered in either GZ400.

The pwm and moot are for solar inputs not DC power from wall power. They manage the variable level voltage and current from the panels. Can't believe goal zero happy about seeing you ugly DC brick into solar input.

How stupid! Why would they put a pwm built-in when they know that the MPPT is better more efficient!!! Do you have solar on your house? Obviously only plug in the yeti during the day while the sun is shining and the solar is powering.... Throw some water on to the panel I bet you're going to get some more wattage cooling it down and cleaning it! PS if you don't have solar for your house please get some and if you don't want net-metering buy a grid-tie limiter inverter, no need to sign a contract for net metering cuz it Doesn't feedback to the grid and easy to hook up....

SolarizeYourLife I haven’t put it on my home yet. I use lots of powers here. I run a large pool pump, 2-3.5 ton ac’s, 1-8000btu window unit in my sons garage apartment, 2-fridges and a deep freeze. My home is 3600 sq ft so we have a lot going on. Solar would cost an arm and a organs wouldn’t pay me back for 20 yrs. I’m selling my home in 10. Installation is too costly as I’m not educated enough for a self install.

mike allen you can put up to 360 watts on pwm or mppt modules and up to 160 watts between the 2 -8mm ports. So on my yeti1000 I can put up to 1040 watts of input but GZ only recommends 750 bc the unit may get hot.
