✪ Top USA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi was the best gymnast in the world… until she became the target of relentless body shaming from her coach and social media. The elite gymnastics industry is notorious for body shaming, and when coach Valorie Kondos took over at UCLA, Katelyn rebelled against the stereotypes and her revenge went viral!
This is what REALLY goes on in the competitive gymnastics culture...

Muscle is very tight and tone. Fat cells are flabby and fat jiggles, there is a difference. Excess fat for a young athlete is not beneficial and counter productive. It also increases risk of injury for gymnasts. This is not "body shaming", nor bullying.

The year I left competitive figure skating at senior level and joined professional ice shows, I was told I was "fat". I literally had a 6 pack, 20in waist and muscular legs. Not a scrap of fat on me (but I'm naturally pear-shaped). You can't change your natural shape! I was hounded for 6 years about my weight, even though I was a US size 2-4! I got to the point I was eating 1000-1200 cals a day, while i was exercising/performing a minimum of 2hrs a day, 6 days a week. It's affected me to this day, and I'm 52.

i think it’s because she also looks to be very short. so the weight on her body makes her look short and ‘chunky’ but she’s clearly still so very fit, it’s just her body. i’m sure she could get smaller if she cut, but she’s not tryna be a bikini model, she needs the mass.

When we say, she just got bullied by everyone because she did not fit in their body standards, we are just scratching the surface of it. The real reason for bullying is often that people just cannot bear to see another fellow human being be extraordinary. They cannot bear to see them shine, to be a light, to be close to legendary, because it reminds them of their own cowardice, to be dependent on approval, to be people pleasers most of the time, and their fear to shine. She is not only a stunning dancer, she also is of an exotic, burlesque kind of beauty, her boundless joy for her work just shows and makes her genius. Unfortunately, she also is vulnerable, wants to be accepted, and does not hide it, and that is why they start the hurting, because they know they can hurt. People are strange sad creatures. Keep shining, beautiful diamond!

Yet at UCLA God put her right in the sights of a head coach that didn’t know the fist thing about being a gymnastics coach. But together they overcame. Coach Val took lessons from the Greatest Coach of all time. And she in turn taught Kaytelyn how to find joy in what she loved doing. I have a body type similar to hers: short, curvy, very muscular. At 20, I got really into weight lifting, then aerobics, then jogging. I was really good at it. It felt very natural, and I loved it. But then I became disabled. I couldn't work. I couldn't run. I couldn't weight lift. Walking a block is now almost impossible, even with a walker, and I have to use a motorized wheelchair to go any distance at all. I felt like I'd lost everything. But here's something I've learned. My natural muscularity, my years of dedication to fitness, my strong body awareness have all helped me immensely as a disabled person. My physiotherapists say I understand their instructions perfectly, and even invent perfect exercises to help myself. My shoulders and arms have become very strong as they take the load from my now disabled back. My body awareness makes me know which exercises, or medications, or ice, or heat, will help the specific kind of pain I'm having in that moment. I even understand what kind of clothing and footwear will help me the most, or hurt me the least. I thank God for my natural muscularity. I understand that my body type is a gift. And all those years that I dedicated to fitness are paying off in ways I never imagined. Please, everyone, love your body, cherish it, find what it's good at and go with it. That self love may pay off in ways you never expected.

Every single coach in every single sport needs to take a page from this coach’s book. My oldest son quit all sports because of horrible coaches. I will give credit to the few great ones he had that saw his talent and helped raise up his self concept. But there were two very bad apples that absolutely don’t need to be coaching kids or anyone. They drug my child down and made him hate the sports he loved playing. Shame on all those coaches out that beating kids up with abusive words. And praise to all the ones like this coach that rise athletes up to appreciate and love the person they truly are!

I actually wish my coaches growing up were tougher like this coach originally tried to be. I enjoy the competition and pushing myself to my limits, not necessarily the sport itself (basketball, gymnastics, soccer). I had far too many coaches (and teachers for performing arts - another passion of mine) coddle me. When my dad coached my soccer team when I was a kid he had the motto, "if you had fun, you won." The entire town hated when he coached. Every team he would coach would lose EVERY SINGLE GAME. My sister and I begged him to stop volunteering. There isn't one right way to be a coach. A coach is supposed to help an athlete improve and win. Of course, when someone is only starting to learn a sport it would typically be a bit abrasive at best to treat the kids as professionals (though some kids would take well to that), but at the level this woman is coaching it's really not going to be beneficial to be too nice.

Unfortunately, you missed the point. Katelyn has said in many interviews that she is very thankful for her coach (Miss Val, not the previous ones). Katelyn not wanting to be great wasn't a power move. It was a heartbreaking statement, and Miss Val recognized that. When she was the best, she hated the sport and herself. The video even says: "winning at all costs had cost her her joy." This coach helped her regain her love for the sport again and helped her get to a healthy mental state after years of abuse. She was a fantastic coach. The beginning was a little confusing but to clear it up, that awful winning at cost mentality is something she left behind twenty years ago after her first year coaching. Since then she has helped many gymnasts that were broken by the sport.

Katelyn is so beautiful! I'm disgusted that people body-shamed her like that! Not only is she an incredible gymnast, she's suffered thru indespicable hatred. No one deserves that kind of treatment. I'm so happy for her that she's been able to realize her inner and outer beauty, and become a happy, healthy young woman once again! I wish I was as mentally strong as she is. I've been very hard on myself in so many ways. And my disappointment in myself wasn't even inflicted by anyone else. It's an internal battle I have with myself every day - that I'm not good enough, that I'm not man enough and that I remember only my failures and not my successes. I'm happy for her. Girls and even my coach taunted me about my weight. Though, I was used as a model when it came to showing proper execution of techniques on flexibility exercises. Unfortunately my leaps were lacking at the time. (After quitting they got better) and I got made fun of for it by my coach and I felt like a cow.
