Gary Lineker talks about Brazil's "astonishing" 7-1 defeat at the hands of Germany in their World Cup semi-final match in Belo Horizonte. Gary says it was one of the most "extraordinary" games he has ever seen and is full of praise for some "beautiful" German goals.

Lineker is a great presenter on everything he does. Very professional. As for Germany, they’ve been in 8 WC Finals and 6 European Championship Finals that’s not counting semi-final defeats. Astonishing record. My country England, just one World Cup Final and TV keep showing it. Can you imagine if we had won the World Cup and Euro Championship as many times as Germany, it would never be off TV.

On the contrary, had England won even what France or Spain has achieved nevr mind Italy or Germany it would be on TV far less. The constant Three Lions, 1966 nonsense very much plays a part in putting unrealistic goals every 2 years on a team where the media pressure and sniping at the slightest let down only accentuates the players often great performances being ridiculed as failures. The sad fact is England are on a par with Greece, Denmark, Holland and Portugal in Major trophies and are similar to Holland in falling at the final hurdle. Having only 1 major tournament win, at home and with an obvious howler from the linesman and ref for a goal that wasn't even close to crossing the line is why its constantly talked up at every WC or Euros. The media calls for Southgate to move on were crazy. He has done more than any England manager at major finals bar one game. For me many of the players are over-rated and play better at club level in England because they are surrounded by foreign players who make them better. The number of EPL big name foreign players make it a great league but at the cost of the English youngsters and the successful national leagues and teams rarely have an English player where all the big English sides are full of the best players from other nations. Another let down 2 weeks ago, though no one could argue Spain were heads and shoulders above every team in the tournament. The best chance was blown at Wembley 3 years ago and I have to admit some late goals particularly vs Slovakia merely papered over the cracks.

+1auriculatus 24 sounds much but 24:4 equals 6, so it was the 6th attempt and the truth is it isnt easy to win a WC because there are other teams as well like netherlands, italy, brasil, argentina, england, france and so on. The only pitty is that germany was always got so close and losing finals and semin finals. For example 2002 against brazil which was a pitty because germany was the better team against brazil but a rare Oliver Kahn goalkeeper mistake lost that game and then you have the strong period of spain in the last years which was a pitty as well because spain had really a once in a century team with Iniesta, Xavi, Ramos etc.. Its always luck to win such a WC, i dont have much hopes for the euro cup this year, germany is kind of out of form at the moment. I would bet my money on france, great young team with potenital future staer players like Kingsley Coman. Germany has again injured players and out of form players.

Brazil got deeper than they probably deserved to. They drew against South American opponents in *both* preceding knockout rounds, and it was pretty obvious they were hanging by a *thread* against Colombia. Germany were clearly a superior team, but there is no way they should have scored more than three goals. What we saw in that game was a home team that was in over their heads, and cracking apart under the pressure. 'Cause remember, they were missing *two* of their star players.

For me, as a german, it was revenge to our lost match in the 2002 WC finals. I am far too young to have witnessed the WC in 2002, but as I began rewatching old matches and I watched the match against Brazil, my heart literally broke in the moment Kahn made this silly mistake and Ronaldo scored. Especially when he sat there, back leaning against the post with an expression on his face that makes you want to cheer him up and tell him everything is alright, although his dream just got crushed, I almost cried. Not because Germany lost, but because Kahn lost after carrying an entire nation into the finals by himself. So you can see, it was almsot satisfying to see the Brazilian team losing, after this really painful defeat 12 years ago(actually it are 19 years by now).

I watched the 2002 WC match live. Germany missed Ballack in finals who was the match winner in quarter and semis. As a 12 year old, I was the only one supporting Germany in that room and every one else, my dad and his friends were Brazilian supporters. They tore me up that day. Fast forward to 2014, I watched this match in a sporting club shack projected on screen. Me and my younger brother were the only 2 supporters of Germany. And yes we had our revenge that night. We'll never know what the game would've been like if Brazil had had Neymar and Thiago! Personally I think we still would have won and probably in a similar manner. Why? What beat the Brazilians on this day, wasn't necessarily a world class german side, although that did do it's part! What beat the Brazilians was the pressure they put upon themselves and the fact that they had no real leader. Take the 1994 side for example. Not great Brazilian team, they could and maybe should've gone out to the US in the last sixteen but what hel them together was a captain called Dunga! The Brazilian team of 2014 lacked that kind of personality. Watching the game in Germany, I knew the minute we scored the first goal, we'd win. The Brazilians just couldn't live up to thier own expecttions and basically succumbed to that pressure. Differing opinions and discussions are welcome!

It's unfashionable to say, but one of the reasons English football struggles to produce certain types of players and managers is because sport is still so divided by class -- a certain half of the country is playing cricket and rugby.

I remember it well. Brazil were nothing in that game. Many knew they were 'helped ' to the semi, especially against Paraguay. That should have been investigated by FIFA, but no,it was Brazil, so no action was taken. It was a great World Cup, but seeing Brazil get to that stage when Germany deservedly humiliated them,spoke volumes for me.I will always remember the Brazil when Pele played for them.They were great to watch, and I hoped Pele and his team mates back then, were outraged by their own countrymen going on like that. Still, roll on the next World Cup. :)

Watching Brazil's total collapse in the match against Germany in the 2014 World Cup was the most astonishing sight I had ever seen viewing this sport or indeed any sport. I couldn't believe what I was seeing even as the disaster unfolded in real time. I watched that tournament on ESPN and I remember how Ian Darke and Steve McManaman couldn't believe what they were seeing. And yet, looking back, there were indications of trouble for the Brazilians such as the way they struggled against a Mexican side that, on paper, they should have been vastly superior to but weren't. And then they go on to get their asses kicked in by Netherlands in the Third Place match.

It's not so much the result, it was how it happened. I mean Brazil giving up 4 goals in 6 minutes.... at home! It's hard to score 7 goals against another team, even a bad team, much less Brazil in Brazil, but Germany made it look easy. That's why the result is shocking. No Thiago, no Neymar, it doesn't matter, your team is in the world cup semifinal, there's no excuse for a scoreline like that. That's why people are blown away by the outcome. I was expecting a 3-1 victory for Germany, not 7-1 and Germany stopped playing from the 30th minute until the 70th. This result could have been much worse. I mean when your opponent shows mercy on you, that means they feel bad, that says something. If Germany put in a result like this against a team they really hate, like Argentina then they would have kept scoring lol. Look at the Germany Portugal game as an example. Germany is far better than Portugal and went up a man in the game as well. Portugal still stopped the bleeding and managed to threaten Germany a few times. They had no chance of winning, but they weren't COMPLETELY embarrassed. Many people were expecting a game similar to that. Anyway yeah it's the result and how the game went that's left everyone shocked. I mean David Luiz is your captain... he left poor Dante back there by himself for like 4 or 5 goals.

That's massivly overexaggerated. Brazil is Brazil, and no one would expected that result. BRA lost their 2 key players, and if they would have played Brazil would have played more like a unit. The 2-0 complettly killed them, things where falling apart from there, and there was no one they could've fall back onto.
@Onmysheet
@Onmysheet 9 жыл бұрын
Fruehlingseffekt This Brazil ain't the Brazil in 2002. The loss of two key players doesn't make a difference, Germany had a full quality squad, whereas Brazil had a average squad, with the exception of Neymar. I'll admit i wasn't expecting a 7-1, more like 4-1 or 3-0. Once the Germans got in flow there was no stopping them.

The bundesliga is shit, as evidenced by Ronaldo raping them en route to Real Madrid's 17-4 aggregate destruction of the league's top 3 last year. Brazil gave up in that game and made an average team look good, nothing more. Why else does anyone think that a Netherlands team that set a record for longest goal drought in the KO stages managed 3 against them? Has nothing to do with a bunch of lucky, overrated Germans.

Not exactly a football comment I'm about to make, but the BBC recently showed 3 1-hour programmes about the Georgian kings in the 18th century. Basically we invited George (the first )from Hannover to become our next monarch as there was no obvious successor to Queen Anne.I like to things are changing with the younger generation, who see the war as ancient history, but sometimes I still despair at how many people in England still regard Germans with suspicion. I actually have friends who travel quite a lot, but very few of them ever consider going to Germany - and if I point this out to them, they simply say 'well, not sure if I would like to go there/not sure how I'd be treated.'

As a Brazilian, I agree that brazil was not a full squad. It was Neymar, Thiago Silva and then everybody else. But that’s not exactly their fault for having such a terrible lineup since filipao as a coach was an anticlimactic time capsule from brazils last World Cup win. He outright ignored defensive talents such as Luis Filipe and Miranda who were dominating at atletico Madrid at the time. Along with Marcelo who had never been where he should’ve been (in defense) in ANY of the games and even afterwards. The defense was left to David Luiz to fend for his own. **TLDR** •Germany was by far the better team •The coach sucked •I’m glad Marcelo no longer plays for Brazil

After the generation lost, Ronaldinho Gaucho declined in quality, Kaká had a hard injury in his waist, Adriano abandoned football and etc... It was normal to renew the players, however, the pressure of playing at home would be a trap and it was a trap. Despite this, our local football are weaker due to the market of football which get young players like Gabriel Martinelli has who never played professionally in Brazil and is already playing for a big team in Europe. All this combination , among others, have contributed to change the relation with Brazilians with football. Now, in 2020, in spite of this difficult time, Brazilian football afterwards the great season done by Flamengo which played a football trying to attack and to be alike that one that we played in the past, the things come across to have improved. The other teams are trying to change the football too. In the 90´s the success of Big Phill "Felipão" who always played football different from our tradition (to attack and keep te ball under control ) dominated our football scenario, however, this time is ending. Brazilian football tend to improve again.
