Sprinter Life | Huckberry

Jon Gaffney and Gale Straub realized that it was time to make a change. They gave up their 9 to 5 jobs, bought a Sprinter and hit the road. Gale runs She-Explores.com while Jon does freelance work and writes for Huckberry. They aren't retired. They aren't professional athletes. They are just two people doing what they can to keep their trip going.

Very courageous. Just one correction though to your comment about it being a badged Dodge. It is the other way around. The sprinter has been around a long time in Europe and during the time when Merc and Chrysler tried working together, Merc rebadged its European Sprinter as a Dodge for the US. Keep rolling....

They are. Never heard of a Dodge pendant to the Sprinter before this video. The Sprinter is pretty common here and it definitely is a german van, no rebadged US van. And I know, I live next to Germany. ;)

So inspiring. I plan to do something similar and run my business from the road. Do you guys find that the big logos draw unwanted attention to the van when trying to stealth camp, especially if you are in an urban area? I'd love to advertise my business while living in cities and would even welcome conversations with people and police, but I'm not sure if that would ruin my camping opportunities.

the mercedez sprinter van (or as the man mentioned, the rebadged dodge van), comes in different flavours. Short wheel base with standard roof. Short wheel base with high roof. Medifum wheel base with standard roof. Medifum wheel base with high roof. And so on. I believe this van is a medium wheel base with high roof. If you go to the Mercedes sprinter website, they will have all the heights, lengths, and widths listed for all flavours.

I sold my Dodge-Sprinter 158" wb. Have left over side-running-boards. You may have it for Free, if you come any time to Florida Panama City. I am buying a new RAM Pro-master. Shure this Sprinter's boards will not feet into RAM

awesome video, overall enjoyed the layout of the vehicle. But I know a few Westy owners who put Porsche 911 turbo engines in their vans and they're hard to beat in that regard.

Eric Hightower it’s more likely they put Porsche 914 engines in the volkswagens 911 engines are usually flat 6’s or a different platform all together and are much harder too mount whereas the 914 engine is a flat 4 and uses the same transaxle it’s a direct swap and you get a great power increase, 911s are also way to expensive to scrap just for the engine enthusiasts pay way to much even for ones that are fucked.

Hey Silvio, Ya I should have given that comment a little more context in the video. "Technically" our van is a Dodge, but only according to its title, which can't be changed. In spite of the fact, that yes it is clearly a Mercedes. It's badged a Mercedes (though I'm pretty sure the grill and badging was aftermarket that the previous owner added, a common mod for T1N Sprinters), in addition the engine is Mercedes, and the VIN plate is very clearly engraved with the Mercedes logo. However, with all that said, the majority of Sprinters in the US from 2002-2006 are "technically" Dodge or Freight Liners as far as the US government is concerned. They were assembled in Germany and then partially broken down and shipped to Gaffney, SC (near and dear to my heart) where they were reassembled and had Dodge badging slapped on them allowing Mercedes (the owner of Dodge/Chrysler at the time) to avoid some of the US taxes if they'd imported it fully assembled as a Mercedes. It's an odd little chapter in automotive history for sure. What I can tell you is it makes for a lot of annoying Craigslist searches when trying to track down a good 2002-2006 Sprinter. It's also a real pain if you try and register it, tell them it's a Mercedes then they run your VIN and see it's titled as a Dodge. While you and I might know this overtly complex "technical" background, it rightfully found its way to the cutting room floor for the video. Your correct, I nearly choked on my coffee when that was said. The Sprinter is pure Mercedes Benz. When Daimler, (Mercedes parent company) bought Chrysler, the Sprinter was badged Dodge for the North American marked. It is probable the toughest long lasting van in it's class. Just before a troll has a go, when I said pure Mercedes, I must add, the Sprinter has a sister van, made by VW, it was a joint development, most of the panels are identical apart from the front. The interiors and engines are from their respective companies. I have driven both on the same day, the Merc has the better engine.

Harvey Smith the Volkswagen was the original design for the van, and the merc engine is smoother, quieter, more economical, however the Volkswagen engine is slightly Quicker and lasts longer in the long run

Nathan Marsh they probably don't make much at all, but van living doesn't require much money. probably boondocks all the time so not paying campground fees. just need money for food and gas. have a credit card handy for emergencies like van breaking down. i bet they could live comfortably on $1000 per month
