Learn what you need to know for healthy goats!
One of my very best friends Kate, the Modern Day Settler, came to visit Nashville from Boston and I asked her to help me make a video about trimming goat hooves and basic veterinary care for goats. Using a goat milking stand, or stanchion, we can clip or farrier our goats using an inexpensive tool kit. As part of my homesteading 101 tutorials, hopefully this can get you on the right track with your goats and other small dairy animals!
Check out my goat stanchion build video! • DIY Pallet Goat Milkin...

Goat care links- molly's herbals, replamin gel, etc can be found here: themoderndaysettler.com/prepa...
** Please use this video only as a general guide, and if your animal needs actual veterinary care, please seek the help of your local veterinarian.

Your goats love to climb. Have you thought of build them a climbing platform made of rocks or concrete? Then your wonderful goats will take care of trimming their own hoofs by climbing over a rock structure. Natures own beautiful way of taking care of itself. And yourself and us get pleasure by watching you filming watching you watching them.

Maybe one day! They do so much wandering and climbing already that their feet really don't need much maintenance at all here. Just a checkup to make sure everything's ok and a trim if they need it.

Please keep doing exactly what you are doing! I love how clear cut and informative your videos are. The humor is great too. I also love the scratches and blood on your hand, not because I want you to be hurt, but it proves how hands on you really are and that you truly are doing it yourself.

Hi,Anne, love your show. Here's a tip you might like to build for your goats. Build an angled climbing structure for them, similar to a doghouse roof, or ramps to a higher platform. Cover it with roofing shingles. As the goats climb and play they'll sand off their hooves naturally, like they would on rocky ground. You still need to check them, of course, because some might favor one angle over another and causing an uneven surface, but it works really well. With all the rain we are getting the ground is too soft to cause natural wear. Having concrete platforms, like garden benches, for them to jump on and off of works, too.

I've said it before but I'll repeat myself. If reincarnation is real I want to return as one of Anne's pets or livestock. I'd be one well taken cared of and happy old goat that's for sure. I'm surprised there isn't a line of animals out side the fence waiting and hoping to be in.

I had NO idea you are supposed to do this with goats too, might be because here goat ppl just, have like 1290312390123 goats on a hill somewhere and only see them to. Well. Move them to green land or pick some for the knife. I had never seen someone doing this, nice to know.

What happens to wild goats? Do they all get hoof rot?
@AnneofAllTrades
@AnneofAllTrades 4 жыл бұрын
No, they are climbing rocks and walking on all kinds of unlevel ground and they get naturally worn down. We have to trim domestic goats because generally they don’t get as much opportunity to get natural wear.

Your trimmers actually look a little dull with practice usually they end up taking a little bit more sole off making them sorta flatter Yes you can use a rasp works well but slower
@AnneofAllTrades
@AnneofAllTrades 4 жыл бұрын
yeah, somewhere in the move I lost my new pair. I don't really like using a rasp because it's too rough on their pads, but I dod know lots of folks who use them.

@@AnneofAllTrades I just mentioned the rasp because someone asked about it in the comments I have a bunch of them horse-sized which I think it is probably best some goats like it at least more than the shears you're doing great thanks for sharing your stuff
