One of the best reviews. Love the direct comparison against the industry leaders. The GOAT has a lot going for it, as long as they take input seriously and thoroughly. Effective wire cutters are a must; should be a clean snip. Effective serrated is a must. Redesign the serrated blade and incorporate the gut hook with it (see Charge +). Otherwise the gut hook has so much wasted space. Effective file is also a must. Fix those and you have yourself a Wave beater. The best part about modular design is once the tool base kinks are worked out, updated tools can be released and replaced individually. Huge possibilities ahead.

Well said, serrated blades are an absolute no go, there's just nothing they do better than a regular blade and serrations will absolutely keep me from buying a tool/knife, but everything else you said, I'm in full agreement with. (Of course we wont agree on everything, but regardless, you clearly know your multi tools man!)

A few things I figured out...I moved the hobby blade to the bit driver side. Then I moved the quick release bar on the other side all the way to the left. There was a washer on that side and I put it between the main blade and the next tool. One hand opening on main blade is way better. Also if you tighten the screws a little everything seems to work a little better.

Very impressive design. I really hope they improve the hard wire cutting ability (thank you for trying that!)… for anyone doing landscaping-gardening-agriculture, cutting 12-14 gauge steel fencing is a pretty basic requirement. Otherwise, this is a great option for someone working outside, because it’s so much easier to disassemble and clean when needed.

Thank you for your review. Your previous video helped me in fixing the same Issue with the scissors you had, but I also had to put a notch at the bottom where it’s supposed to stop at the cam when opened, it wasn’t engaging at the stop and not letting the spring action to work, Now it works as intended. The wire cutting inserts were loose and not cutting anything so they had to be tightened up and now work better, but they need to change the design because they don’t bypass enough in my opinion. When I got the Goat it was overall really tight, so I had to loosen the screws a bit till I found the sweet spot. I also moved the knife to the other side and it works better now. Like you pointed out, it’s not a one handed deployment multi tool and I don’t think it will ever be due to the clumping of the tools when trying to deploy them. Its main appeal is its modularity and being able to swap its components. Also like you said, for being its first production run is not that bad. Cheers!

I love it. Is it perfect? Nope. Is it innovative and useful? YES. my one complaint is that deploying tools feels dated and clunky. Other than that it is excellent as a first attempt. I expect the next version will be even better. Very excited about the direction of this company.

@@inkiron3907 that’s a really good idea. I also wonder if they could pre-fit bronze spacers on the bars to help with the clumping. And like you said, the new tool option is amazing. Improvements to the toolset no longer means buying a new tool. If he can find a way to build the clumping solution into the tools themselves then that would solve just about everything.

Nice review. I think you covered everything very well. I have 2 GOAT tools (silver/black) with all of the add-ons. I got in on the Indiegogo campaign early 2023. I'm a multi-tool fanatic so even with its minor problems I thinks its a nice addition to my multi-tool collection. I would add that their support has been really good for me. My scissors broke and they were quick to respond and send me replacement scissors (I paid shipping). GOAT has free 3D printing STL files for the scales so I've had fun printing different scales. They also offer template files for the long and short tools. These are on their website. Thanks for the review and all of your content. I enjoy your channel. Take care!

Don't have one myself, but might get one eventuslly after the kickstarter. I think it's too bad to have a good sized flathead driver that could even be used as a light duty pry bar/scraper, but is limited so much by that huge cutout. Great overview of the tool!

i amtrying to talk myself into the idea of buy a GOAT while they are at thus price point. The blades will be refined and iseas will result in new styles but the main thing is the interchangability. In my view that makes this tool about 3X more valuable than even my Leatherman Surge. I have flexibility of some things i can do but i am limited that i can not remove a blade to use like the GOAT and if i want to change it into a cullinary multitool or a camping multitool with knife/fork/shallow spoon i can do it because i have the genius frame. A gentlemans grooming insert with comb and file and scissors and tweezers....the customization possibilities are endless. Because of its core design! Yup....i think im honna get one and then let the company catch up with a ton of options we can each buy to make it our own! Have fun everyone!

I wish there was a t-shank adapter available, a la leatherman. Also, I wish the pliers had a finer tip, the scissors as well and the wire cutters had a better steel - cpm 154 or even high hardness aeb-l. The frame needs to be a half inch or so longer, so a longer saw, blade, etc. can be housed. A titanium frame and pocket clip would be nice...perhaps in version 2.0?
@bills.2214
@bills.2214 9 ай бұрын
Very nice review, courteous attention to detail. I am not in the market for this brand of tool, because I feel the usefulness of the Surge is hard to displace. I recently purchased some accessories from Leatherman, and the Sight Adjuster/Bit Driver is awesome! The Bits do not fall out because of the magnet, and the extender really does add capability to the screwing tasks I have done, IMO. Another awesome accessory is the metal saw blade that Leatherman sells. I think it's for a Mut w/the Exchange a Blade. The blade although a little on the stubby side, worked very nicely for sawing off extra threads from a machine screw (although it probably used more calories than a regular coping saw blade length would). My next foray would be to turn the large flat screwdriver on the Surge into a Chisel. Now see, if Leatherman would allow this service to be done, or sell such tools to add them, like GOAT...sigh. My problem is I have never messed w/security torx, and don't really want to.
@billybunter3753
@billybunter3753 5 ай бұрын
Don't worry about messing with the T10 security torx screws on your Surge. You just need two of them. It was my first time using the torx screws and it was very easy. I actually like having the tools on my Surge tight so I tightened them up a little. Perfect!

Just got mine yesterday and I agree with all your criticisms, but I'm still having fun messing with it. I think mine already came with the main blade installed next to the bit driver, where it works better. That V thing is uncomfortable though. File is VERY bad; grooves on the sides aren't deep enough and I think it might not be properly heat treated, but the edge cutting capabilities seem like they could be a little better. I wonder if the flathead is designed that way so that it fails instead of some other part of the frame failing. Was it ever marked as a bottle opener? I've never seen that and definitely wasn't able to get mine to work as one. I thought the can opener was a combo tool to also open bottles, and that was the only bottle opener we were getting. I made my order before that piece was available.
@inkiron3907
@inkiron3907 9 ай бұрын
I had moved my blade next to the awl/flatheads, etc. after the first week and it started behaving differently. The original position next to the bit driver seems best now that I went back. Yeah I need to know wtf that V is 😂 so odd. The file is surprisingly bad. Somebody in a Shorts comment told me the driver was supposed to double as a bottle opener. I’d never heard about that, and I think they were probably just making it up because it doesn’t work like that. The can opener will open bottles, it just stabs the cap first, much like a Leatherman Surge

You could try heat on the screw head. A wood burning tool or soldering iron is the most targeted way to apply heat. The threadlocker should yield with heat above 140F so it won’t take long. Heat 10-15 sec then try the screw again. If it doesn’t work after a few attempts you’ll have to try something else 😅

Thanks for the review. I agree with the need for a thumb stud on the main blade but that might impact moving the blade to other locations on the multi-tool. I agree it's a good first effort from GOAT Tools and agree with your comparison to the Leatherman Free P4 and how the Free P4 is kind of disappointing for Leatherman after 40 years of manufacturing multi-tools (especially after comparing it to the recently released Leatherman Garage #5). I assumed some of the tools - like the can/bottle opener were good without trying them out yet so your review helped. Your review of multi-tool can openers is probably the best (if not only) KZbin video comparing can openers.

An easily swappable thumbstud would be a huge win for this tool. Given that the knife is probably not going to move for me now, I’d be willing to permanently affix a stud. The P4 paved the way for the Garage #5 and upcoming Arc tools so I just hope that the GOAT leads to a nicely refined GOAT 2.0 that I could recommended to anybody. The GOAT is still easily recommendable to those who tinker with their multitools. Yo thanks for recognizing that I actually use the tools! I’m glad it’s helpful. I went years with Multitool can and bottle openers that I hadn’t used and one day I just started doing it and it’s been informative. I have bled for this today but got it working the way I wanted, key takeaways are: * the washer diameter on the blade side is too small and that's why blade gets stuck behind plier shroud, solution: replacing with bigger washer * you don't have to have modular switch on top of the blade, I have relocated it to opposite side and I can open the knife with no fuss with my right hand, in this case you should move washer to where modular switch was as otherwise knife has a weaker locking * make sure to unlock scissors fully before closing them, mine broke, but warranty was awesome, only have to pay shipping * scisors have a small bump on one side and don't like most of other tools to be from that side * hobby blade also needs a bit of space on either side * seen somewhere that the back side of pliers (where hammer is) can be used for for opening beers * bit driver side doesn't have small washer I mentioned and that's why knife is more stable there in the video also my first multitool and my first day with it, will see how my changes translate into real life scenarios aand I'm bleeding again 😁😁😁😁 all in all still pretty happy with it 🤘🤘gotta go now to clean up blood 😁😁😁

Leatherman’s Free P4 has a good locking system and half-assed toolset. That’s like 40 years experience and countless millions in revenue and engineering teams behind it. Expecting perfection is a losing game in the multitool industry. After handling 19+ multitools myself, I know trade-offs are to be expected, because they can’t be avoided.

@@inkiron3907I had high hopes of the P4. Then when I saw what toolset they had put in it, I just thought f*ck! Waiting on the GOAT to be shipped. Seemed a better way to spend my money than on the P4!

The "V" that you mention you don't know the purpose of - could it be a nail-puller? The V shape might be proud like that in order to fit a nail's head underneath so you can lever it out.

And yes, the reamer is disappointing... sure you can sharpen the edge and drill a small hole to make it a proper awl but would be much better if it came as is....

Why doesn't anyone ever talk about simple rim oil before talking about brass spacers?

I don’t want that on my tool, so that’s why I don’t talk about it. Pretty simple.

Or nano oil. better yet vancron 40 washers/spacers but that would cost a small fortune 😂

Great review, and great video! Interesting that you say they’re not ideal as a beginners tool. As I myself am a beginner looking for their first multi tool, and the goat was probably highest on my current research list as it’s one of a few multi tools that can be made into a uk carry legal multi tool (without a locking blade) especially with the modularity of the tool, allowing me to discover what tools I need day to day and being able to swap them around. Or would you say it’s not a beginners tool yet, due to the lack of experience that the company has had compared to Leatherman who’ve had many years to know what to do. Just curious to learn more about your thoughts :)

👍🏼cutters are disappointing. Screw too big, cutters don’t overlap enuff. I think not much room to overlap with different little cutter inserts unless they redesign the plier head. Hobby blade is gonna get somebody. I’m also making vids. Not as professional as you🙂 but showing what I’m experiencing in multiple vids. I subscribed.

I mean technically they could make a new plier head and it could be swapped out which is not ideal, but I’ve never see another company do that! If I figure out a fix for the hobby blade wiggle I’ll post it. Haha I’m no professional, all my video making is just 5 years of trial and error. I run the whole channel off a phone. A good mic and editing app go a long way. Oh and definitely make Shorts. Hope that helps and I’ll check out your content 👍

After 4 month of using GOAT: this will be your secondary multitool, if you manage to put in, tools you don't have in your main. the Locking is bad, tool open by itself because the plier spring ( no magnets), sv35n blade is good. scissors, the spring don't go in place, you need to manually push it. wood saw= Really BAD, Plier= mmmf so so. File= extremely BAD, (i prefer any chinesse one)can opener = the worst ever. locking system, BAD, belt pouch, doesn't have room for all the extra tools you can purchase, so on the go, no hot swap tools. Hex are OK, hobby cutter= be careful some time wont totaly close, point out = DANGEROUS. not one hand operation. rimer= bad shape, bad angle, screwdriver= it's ok, comes with double philips, safety cutter, works for a month daily use, then dull, can opener= use a lighter. Brass scales looks awesome. scale screws= cheap, 2 time use, look for replacement screws. flat screwdrivers, are ok. the extra tools you can purchase wont fit, some need 1mm washers (not provided).still use my P4, and swiss champ. GOAT in my EDC backpack, as secondary or idk, maybe for some redundancy needed (2 pliers) overall= medium/bad, for the money you get way better options that last a life, not this one. not at all. $215 (with extras) just for ... nothing...

I have the same Victorinox Spirit MX, which I've never used for anything, and it has the same double-notch hard cutters. The SOG Pint has the gear ratio leverage, the LM and Vik have hard wire notches. The GOAT has neither, and that's probably at least part of why the coat hanger is so hard to get through.
@inkiron3907
@inkiron3907 9 ай бұрын
Cool I just didn’t know how notched they were at the start 😂 I look at a lot of tools. Someone on Reddit mentioned these are “anvil” cutters and not “bypass” cutters. More mashing, less snipping, which makes sense given how they perform
