Wow this brings back memories, i believe the tombstone may have been called bloody tight unless i'm thinking of a different section. I did the drainpipe which was fine, The worst bit about it was having someone saying there stuck in front of you and someone behind you luckily they were not stuck they were panicking. I shouldn't say it, but back in the early 70's when I was in my mid teens, three of us did that entire same trip wearing t-shirts, jeans and trainers, with two torches between the three of us. Watching the video brought back memories, it's very difficult to describe the drainpipe to anyone who has never been there.

I remember going through the drainpipe around 1983 with Mr Lock from Brislington School. I had to save up my lunch money because my parents didn't want to pay for it. I was already skinny but a few days without lunch probably aided a little more with getting through it. I'm sure they called it the devil's drainpipe. Maybe they were making it seem a little more ominous for us kids. Great memories.

Just for all you claustrophobic guys. I'm super claustrophobic and i completed the drainpipe as a teen back in school. Believe it or not, once you get inside it's not that bad. You just have to keep moving and remember that before long you'll be out. I didn't freak out at all, although there was one point where the guy in front of me stopped and i said "hurry up!" As i was about to get scared but luckily he started moving again. Definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to push themselves. All I can say about anybody who does this shit is you have balls of steel. This is the most messed up shit I have ever seen watching videos and don’t know why I do it to myself. I watched a bunch of vids and read all the stories on the Nutty Putty caves and John Edward Jones and it really messed me up. I have never been afraid of anything especially from seeing it on tv or watching a video and now every time I see something like this my heart starts pounding n I get these really bad feelings of doom that cut through my body so bad that I can feel physical pain for some reason. I don’t know why this happens to me now but even the other day watching the walking dead I was watching the episode in season 10 where they were trapped in the underground caves trying to get away from the whisperers and the big dude Jerry was behind everybody and eventually he started to get stuck. I had to stop watching it had my heart pounding so hard. I put on a finger monitor I have n my heart beat was 145 bpm. I was freaking out and basically having a panic attack and all I could think of was John Jones stuck upside down in that cave begging them to get him out. I messed myself up bad by reading n watching that story.

Thanks for taking the time to comment 👍 sounds like the nutty putty story really freaked you out! The tight squeezes or water I really don’t mind. I had the same problem it's totally normal but you adjust mentally eventually out of necessity! my friend sent me that story to suffer through because she was scared of it 🤦🏻♀️ then I was, ultimately remind yourself you have power over your own choices and limits in these scenarios and that's what matters! We visited this cave today and didn't go that far in but it was fun exploring it a little ! Tons of teenagers in groups were fearlessly popping up from the exit unharmed making jokes about the comparatively "tropical" air of the heatwave compared to the cave 😂

Thanks for taking the time to comment Karen, always great to get some feedback. This trip is actually a fairly easy trip but with the drainpipe thrown in for good measure to test you! There are many caves in the area offering much more challenging trips. As you say the trick is to remember that you also need to get back out! I went here years ago, probably around 1999/2000 with Gav Kitchen and his buddy Tim(?) from our school. I did almost all of it, but the drainpipe (I think we were told it was called "The Smartie tube") was just too much for me, despite trying to do it about 4/5 times, it's the sticking out bit of rock with the tight right angle that did it for me, I just felt like I was getting trapped, and it looked so small in there my head just told me no. Tried it again in about 2014 and yep still not for me. Gives me palpitations just thinking about it now

Have you been in all of the drain pipes in goats church I think there's 2. I've also been in reads Cavern rods pot avilienes hole swildons hole and been to Manor farm pierre's pot bath swallet and drunkyards hole but I do quite a lot of reading on caves
@TheCavecrawler3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are pretty active! Try the Bath Pot to Rods through trip. That’s a good trip. Lionels hole is also a good trip. A tougher challenge is Eastwater cavern , tight, steep and knarley! Some good round trips in there. My favourite is Longwood/August. If you haven’t already I suggest joining a club, I can definitely recommend the Wessex Cave Club. That way you get use of their facilities, are close to Swildons and Eastwater and get access to the gated caves as well as benefiting from their members experience. Loads to explore on Mendip that can keep you going for years.

He wouldn't mind taking me in eastwater he just needs his mates he also wouldn't mind taking me in G. B as it's one of his favourite caves and it's mine as well as I've done a lot of reading on it. I don't know about Lionels hole I've never really payed attention to it it's next to fox hole isn't it? Hi and thank you for taking the time to comment. You’ll be pleased to hear that this cave is actually an “easy” cave and is often used to teach new cavers. At no point are we ever more than about 10 minutes from the entrance. I am an experienced caver with around 30 years caving experience including rescue practice in Goatchurch Cavern so know very well what risks are involved and how difficult a rescue would be even from this cave (it takes around 2-3hrs to haul a stretcher from the entrance to the drainpipe to the surface). Our kit is all built for caving and is extremely reliable, all the best practice is followed when doing a trip underground including ensuring our families know where we are going, the route we are taking, what time we are due out and who to call if we are overdue. Caving is in fact a pretty safe and exciting hobby if you follow some simple rules and provides an opportunity to visit unique underground environments that most people will never see. You should give it a go sometime with an experienced cave leader, you may find you enjoy it!

No one even has videos of the back because it’s impossible to film and wriggle through at the same time. And helmet cam would just be cramping against the walls and ceilings. 2 miles of Worley’s is walkable passage and 2.5 is all belly crawling back touching the ceiling.
