"Eris the Goblin Slayer"
Eris decides to take on a goblin slaying quest and witnesses a boastful young mage named Cliff getting into trouble. Eris saves him but when he calls her ugly she beats him up. Cliff asks to form a party so Eris reluctantly agrees but is furious when Cliff burns the goblins to ashes, leaving no evidence of the quests completion. Witnessing assassins attacking a little girl and her guard Therese, Eris kills the assassins and claims to Therese she is Ruijerd the Superd. As they leave one of the surviving assassins recognises Cliff as Master Cliff and wonders why he is with a Temple Knight. Ruijerd interrogates the assassin before he dies and learns they are allies of the Pope who supports co-existence between humans and demons, whereas the Temple Knights and their leader the Archbishop do not. Cliff asks Eris to marry him, claiming he must be more impressive than Rudeus, but when he sees Eris’ face while she thinks about Rudeus he realises he stands no chance against her feelings for Rudeus and goes home depressed where it is revealed the dead assassins were actually his tutors. Eris returns to Rudeus and finds him upset after his fight with Paul. Cliff sits in his room thinking about Rudeus.

Eris decided Cliff was useless after that brief first fight with the goblins by comparing him to Rudy for a few reasons. 1. She had seen Rudy use the same spell with more powerful flames without a chant. 2. Rudy would have picked a more appropriate spell so they could collect the ears as proof for the quest. Cliff was showing off. 3. Rudy would definitely warn her before shooting off any spells. Notice she clicked her tongue before jumping away.

For context, Cliff is impressive, even compared to veteran adventurer. 1/40000 mage reach advance rank in one branch. This guy reach advance in 4 attack branch and beginning or intermediate in healing&detox. Calling himself a genius isnt too far fetched. His achievements can be made a genius of the decade, of course without Rudeus. If people truly know his ability, no one would denied him but since he’s got 0 experience as an adventurer and start at F rank adventurer, no party can take him in because the rule said so (discount his bratty attitude) If Cliff become adventurer, with some experience, he can be like, top 10 greatest adventurer mage of all time.

@@aacm1259 Rudeus is also incomparably smarter in his usage of spells. He basically only uses intermediate or beginner rank spells that he alters and modifies with his insane amount of mana and modern knowledge, like the fireball he threw at Orsted in episode 21 or the stone bullet before that.

@@anlyuksel2194 SPOILER I think the key there is his modern knowledge, for sure he is smart but he benefits most from his modern knowledge where he knows certain things are posible because he knows they have already been done through science, like the fireball againt Orsted was him replacating a nuclear blast, or adding rotation to the stone canon to increase it's kinetic energy and therefore it's power. Cliff however doesn't know any of that, he has to go in blind and innovate on his own findings. And while we know that Rudeus alone could develop the magic armour, it was through Cliff that he was able to do it so much earlier and faster or Rudeus going to Cliff to figure out a way to suppress Orsted curse. Its a case of most kids that go to school this days know more about science than Issac Newton ever did, but can they claim to be smarter than him though?

@@abura2980 I'm just using my eyes. The animation shows it clearly. They look at her weapon, then her eyes and they know that they are out of their depth in a fight with her. The insult they throw is to try and save face to the room. I haven't read the source material. Everything I need to know is in the series. The visual storytelling is on point.

Seeing Eris express her admiration for Rudy, along with seeing her follow Rudy's teachings was really awesome and shows how much she thinks of Rudy (and makes their parting even more bittersweet). MT is full of so many good characters and I can't wait to see Darius react to S2.

The whole bit about how Eris "sensing a presence" was taught by her sensei she didn't meant Rudeus. She meant Ruijerd, and how he has taught her a lot of stuff, people forget that Ruijerd has been training with Eris since the demon continent and has taught her a lot more about the stuff regarding combat not necessarily moves, so Eris considers Ruijerd her Sensei alongside Ghislaine and Rudy. Cliff doesn't know that, he only knows about Rudeus by her so when he asked how she knew Eris went like Eris: "My sensei taught me" Cliff: "Rudeus must be an amazing person" Eris: Why is he talking about Rudeus? But yeah, he is amazing "Rudeus is amazing!" Or something along those lines

I was thinking of things like how Rudy told her that she shouldn't go into the forest because its dangerous and that Eris copied the way when Rudy did a good deed, he would call himself Dead End Ruijerd. Also, its a good parallel between Eris and Rudy that they were both willing to jump right into dangerous situations to save children.

"Dead End does not leave children to their fates" sounds like a tenet that is driven home by Ruijerd, starting with him protecting Rudy and Eris since the demon continent.

Fun fact, when eris introduced herself as superd it made the knight think it was a polite way to decline a possible reward but also all the paperwork involved with this incident because of how everybody knows the order is hardcore against demons and no one would mention it to their face

In Millis, there are two main factions. One under the pope, the most powerful religious leader and the one who took Cliff in. The pope is also cliff's grandfather. Cliff is half human half hobbit/halfling. The pope is the head of the demon acceptance faction which is a new movement that is less powerful and widespread than the demon exclusion faction. The demon exclusion faction is under the control of the second most powerful religious guy (I forgot the name of his title). They control the temple knights and is generally more supported, but losing members. The temple knight that Eris saved is actually Rudeus's aunt (Zenith's sister) and Zenith's family is part of the demon expulsion faction (which is significant because Zenith allowed a demon to tutor her son).

Eris is not a tsundere, but she's closer to a Type B with Rudy (mostly sweet but gets harsh sometimes,) and Type A with everyone else, (harsh most of the time.)

she is harsh with weak people and people she generally just doesnt like. She is harsh with Rudy when he is an ass. And she 100% shows her affection and admiration about him all the time. Thats anything but Tsundere, i hate when everyone just calls Eris a Tsundere because of her red hair and being too easy to get pissed off. The main thing with Tsunderes is they are doing anything/everything in their abilities to not show the person of interest that they like them or admire them. She doesnt care about any of it. She does and acts how she feels at any given time.

Idk if you noticed but the knight lady Eris helped was actually Zeniths sister. That makes her Rudeus’s Aunt. You can tell because she said she is from the Latreia house. I can’t remember if she’s the olde for younger sister though.

Just to put things in perspective. This incident really revitalizes Eris’s confidence as a warrior to be by Rudeus’s side, as she realize how strong she actually is, going against 4 assassins that were easily considered advanced rank. BUUUUT, guess who shattered her confidence which drove her to leave Rudeus in search of greater strength and power? Dragon God Orsted. The man basically 1 tapped Eris.

More like Eris the Heart Slayer. Notice the two birds when Eris and Cliff met, one was courting the other bird. Then on the bridge where they parted ways, those same two birds were seen parting ways before Eris and Cliff did. I love it when shows do symbolism like that. And love how Darius really appreciates this masterclass anime.

I don't know if this is already said before, but even with this OVA, there are some minor stuff that's changed from the LN in the Millis part of the story. Had the anime been 100% true to the LN, there would be an extra episode (with this OVA then 2), but they decided to change some minor details (I guess to simplify the story a bit). Also, this is 100% canon, so there is a relevancy to the overall plot (like many minor details in Mushoku Tensei in general).

Yeah, As much as we wanted to see [Terrified Goblin Noises: The Anime] happen here in Watertown, This is good, give us more of this.... Never... NEVER trust the Anime Pope! Temple Knight is clearly related to Zenith (this is her hometown).... Poor Cliff, so lost he even tried to be a Mandalorian for the walk home.... Since you commented on it, the current situation with demons in Millishion is not great, but under the Pope it has gotten significantly better than what it used to be. Previously, demons were either forbidden from entering the city or were forcefully driven away.

Season 1 missed some interactions depicted in the LN/WN. When Rudy, Eris, and Ruijerd was about to cross the sea from Milishion to the Central Continent, there was supposed to be an interaction with a relative that would help them ride the ship...Dunno why it was left out but it was somewhat a relevant part that I wished they could've included in S1...Or, at the very least, featured in an OVA. Edit: I enjoyed Darius' reaction throughout the season. If you have time, you might want to read the manga version, especially on the chapters that showed Rudeus' reunion with Paul. That particular part had a darker theme in the manga and I personally preferred that version instead of the anime rendition. Still, I highly anticipate the next season for MT tho' we may have to wait a little longer for that.

It's nice to be introduced to Cliff, a character who will be front and center in season 2. Sadly Eris will not be but other characters we have come across will be showing up. The thing I'm looking forward to the most oddly enough is seeing the bard from the various manga being brought to life in animated form. She is the one constant in everyone's stories, it kind of makes me wonder if maybe she is more then she seems. Since she is a manga exclusive character I wonder if she will even be brought into the anime?

Vol 13 chapter 2 talk about he’s starting year 3 (which mean he turned 17 recently) Vol 13 chapter 1 state that several month earlier Roxy apply for becoming Professor at the University which mean Rudeus is around 16y 6-8 months old when Roxy apply to the Uni. The entire journey of Teleport labyrinth took 6 month, It is safe to say that during the Begaritt event (which supposedly be around the end of s2), Rudy is around 16.

Cliff has full right to call himself a genius mage. Roxy explained this to Rudy "a magician capable of fighting is 1:400, of those, 1:100 will graduate Magic University being a advanced tier mage. So, Advanced tier mages who can fight are One in Forty thousand. Cliff here, by age 12 was advanced in all 4 attack magics and beginner/intermediate in the other three schools (healing, detox, divine). So Cliff is effectively a one a century talent where Roxy and other King class mages (there are like 4 of them excluding Orsted) are once a decade kind of thing.

You can count the number of King class mages in their world on one hand. That's what Paul said to Rudy in episode 4. So I would say Roxy the Water King mage is an even rarer breed than Cliff. Don't forget she is also very accomplished in other magical areas too at this point of the story.

@@Ahjenta in the same way, there are only 4 mages who are advanced in 4 or more schools. They are Rudeus, Slyphiette, Cliff and Moore. I doubt there’s any other mages who have mastered 3 or even 2 advanced tier magics as they chose one and become advanced or a saint. That’s why I think Cliff is rarer because he knows more spells than anybody else in the world since Laplace.

@@brettzky183 It was Roxy who taught Rudy all 4 advanced attack magics. This means she herself can cast them as well. In fact, when she created the barrier that protected Paul's horse (Caravaggio) and herself while Rudy cast Cumulonimbus during his graduation test, the spell she used (Earth Fortress) is an advanced earth spell. Cliff excels in holy magic though, and he becomes an expert in dealing with curses. Nobody else come close to his accomplishments in this area.

@@Ahjenta you make a good point, but Roxy herself said she is only passed advanced in water and told Rudeus she’s “up to beginner or intermediate in the other schools”. So he probably learned them from the textbook cause I believe he said the book covered up to advanced tier. I don’t rivalled if earth fortress was advanced or intermediate but you very well could be right. She however, has shortened her incantations significantly which Cliff never did so it’s totally fair to pick Her as the second best mage. I still believe Cliff knows more spells overall though.

@@brettzky183 Book 1 described the scene where Roxy created Earth Fortress to shield herself and Caravaggio, and said that is an advanced Earth spell. SPOILER . . . . . . . . Years later, during the war arc, Roxy is crafting fire saint class scrolls though Rudy pointedly noted that Roxy normally can't use this level of fire spells via chanting. So I do think Roxy is the one who taught Rudy advanced attack magic. If he learned those spells on his own from reading the book, then he might as well learn everything on his own and Paul and Zenith didn't have to hire a home teacher for him. There is also the epilogue in the web novel. History will call Roxy one of the Three Great Mages of the 5th century (years 400 - 500). The other 2 being Rudy and Silent Seven-Star. Cliff however, is remembered for his accomplishments in the Mills church.
