I installed GoBoard in a shower. Great, great stuff. I built a box out of it and filled it with water. I used Kerdifix to caulk the seams. No leaks for 2 weeks. I then put it outside in zero degree weather froze it for several days. After it thawed, it stayed watertight. I have a square of GoBoard that I put over a drywell as a cover secured with a brick. I have used quite a few foam boards over the years. The flex is not a problem when using bigger tiles. I like go board ok and the price at Crossville is less that the rest. The biggest problems I’ve noticed are. Itchy that is because the stuff that is for bonding is falling off. Also I’ve noticed red guard peeling off some which seems to be remedied by damp wiping. I think cement board with waterproofing is best but waterproofing cost to much in time and at 60 those boards are getting heavy lol

I like the Goboard as well. I dont get the use of silicone though. If you plan to use Redgard over the Goboard why not simply fill the seams and screw holes with it? Thats all i do. I fill any deep gaps, seams and screw holes with Redgard. Its usually sufficient just to apply it with paint brush but if any gaps are larger than 1/8" ill use a putty knife. Once dry i apply a second medium heavy coat and embed 3" to 6" fiberglass mesh cloth or tape on all seams, corners and around the drain all the way to the edge of the drain opening. Redgard fills 1/8" seams, gaps and 3/8" screw holes/divots just fine and is the recommended process as per Redgard instructions. Its only when someone tries to fill too large a gap or hole that it will crack. If ever filling any gap larger than 3/16" or so i do it in atleast 2 or 3 coats, never applying it more than about 1/8" thickness, preferably less. Along with the fiberglass cloth/tape it has never failed me. Im not questioning your methods, what works for you works for me. Im just curious as to why you would introduce another material and step/process rather than simply continuing with the material and process already in use. Btw im experimenting with a new process to deal with water intrusion at the curb. I have a demo built and currently in testing, going on 2 yrs now. Ill let you know if succesful and show you how to do it. Its a way to eliminate or atleast mitigate any water intrusion from the tile and grout as well as any penetrations such as for shower glass door/surround mounting/pivots etc and can be used on the curb, benches and knee walls. In fact, i might want to get your opinion and input on it. It could be a new system in the works. Stand by!

Can you "wet shim" with Goboard? You gotta admit, Isaac with the floats is at the top of the KZbin tile game (among English speakers anyway.) Floats like that are how they do it in Asia and I'm assuming Jamaica, just without lath and straight to concrete or bricks. I wish I floated my walls instead of using Wonderboard, because as you said, Wonderboard/Durock bends too much with your studs, and sheetrock does hang flatter for sure, and in every country but litigation happy USA the liquids like Aquadefense are spec'd for sheetrock. I will say though, you are wrong on the wallboard. Our oldest mastic and subway tiles straight to I'm assuming normal sheetrock job did have some loose tiles at actually about shoulder height where water would hit most, and the sheetrock section near the edge of the tub with tiles on it did disintegrate into nothing, and that was just a normal tub surround, not an embedded shower pan. Mind you the job was probably done in the 70s and lasted into the 2000s, but still.

Actually Issac shows himself screwing up jobs a lot, so I'd never hire him despite his floating walls...which most tilers CAN do but don't because it's time consuming, labor intensive, messy, and antiquated given newer methods. And although floating is common in Jamaica, buildings are block and concrete too. The 40 year old sheetrock/tiled garbage is not what we do anymore, 4x4 ceramics aren't used in showers, we're waterproofing, using better grouts, sealing, better & larger tiles insure our work far outlasts the 40 year garbage despite what backer is used.

StarrTile (I’m dying laughing 😂 seriously though I wouldn’t hire Issac if he was the last tradesman on earth. He somehow screwed up redgard in a video. How could anyone screw that up? It’s so easy any diy person could use it successfully! Paint roller or brush + two coats. Like I bet a trained hamster could do it if you gave it a small enough brush 😂)

The goboard is attached to studs right? Studs, especially on an outside wall, will expand and contract with temp swings and house settling. As long as the caulking is very elastomeric and not sensitive to temp swings, then a crack shouldn’t develop at the joints. You did right by leaving an 1/8” gap at the seams. Go board won’t expand and contract hardly at all but the studs sure will.

It is, but it is about 6 lbs vs 39lbs for a sheet of durock. Worth it for $100 if you're hanging 5 sheets. When compared to Kerdi, its super cheap, lol.
@ThorD46022 жыл бұрын
Yes, but durock is heavy, has annoying mesh in it, not easy to cut and isn't waterproof. So goboard is actually cheaper than durock in all meaningful ways. Try it.

I will never use cement board or any other backer board other than the GoBoard!
@donkeydump633 жыл бұрын
I just purchased materials for a bath I'm tiling. My plan was to use go board for the tub surround and shower enclosure and HardieBacker on the rest of the walls thinking it would be cheaper. Little did I know the latter cost $7 more per sheet. That not only makes GoBoard the cheapest backer board but also one of the easiest to install. This one's a no brainer

You lost me when you busted out the garage “Dap” caulk. If you want it to stick and last. Urethane. Why spend extra on the board only to use inferior caulk.
@StarrTile10 ай бұрын
First of all polyurethane is chemically toxic and that alone would stop me from using it, I get enough silicas into my lungs with all my mortar material, secondly and more important it is a sucky product to use around water. I use what I feel is appropriate and that's my choice and it is my warranty
@rickhoupt693310 ай бұрын
I apologize it’s not Urethane. It’s silyl-modified polyether. Which is JM’s GoBoard pro sealant. I am just not a fan of anything Dap makes. You warranty your work with it so if you stand by it that’s all that matters.

grout is porous, green board is absorbent. If is not waterproofed, it will be wet. I've done several over the years that were saturated (lower foot) when Redgard is not used. A lot of lazy tile guys out there

great to see your converting to foam, at least partially, with these boards you can use thinset adhesive over the studs before you fit the boards if the studs are out of plumb or not straight, I also worry about the deflection if these boards are subject to impact compared to plasterboard a perfect install but if you do need to use a proper sealant polyurethane or ms hybrid type sealant applied to the board edges as they are fitted and push boards together, silicone or painters caulk isn't really suitable. i wouldn't recommend using a a tube of sealant at all, to much messing around and looks a mess, the proper ms sealant sticks like shit to everything and makes a mess, its also expensive and not a true waterproofing system you could guarantee, its quicker and far better to use a jointing tape with two part cement/acrylate ardex/wedi/schluter etc, job done
@StarrTile5 жыл бұрын
I'm only slightly concerned with the deflection in the boards, and you can't really wet shim a board like that and still attached it to the studs because that by itself will cause some type of pushing in, it's almost like if you wet shim you have to wait till the next day... I suppose putting a straight edge on the studs will determine whether I use a stiff wall board or this stuff. To your point about 101 percent waterproofing on a wall, as I mentioned in a video I just don't run into issues when there isn't waterproofing it on them at all so anything we do better will just be insurance, nothing more.
@jameslewis65675 жыл бұрын
@@StarrTile for sure if you wet shim you have to wait for the next day to screw your fixings home. and your defiantly right about the wall getting wet, (excluding some showers I've seen myself that have zero ventilation/shower enclosure goes to the ceiling, causing the shower to constantly be damp) the walls don't get damaged just the lower portion so i suppose the advantage of a board like this is water can not migrate up into the core of the board if it where to touch the shower floor. even if the board is set above the shower floor water can still migrate up the thinset adhesive and or tile and its not uncomment for the void created when the shower board does not come into contact with the pan to fill with water, there is less area for any water behind the tile to escape into the pan and an entire wall surface above where water can potently penetrate, especially where a shower door/profile gets wet and the profile fills with water
