The fit and finish is really a notch above most ebikes these days. Which is not too surprising, being that the founder comes from McLaren. The way they designed the seatpost is simply brilliant and the internally geared hub is becoming the norm for any future ebike that I am looking to build or buy.

Yeah, Richard is a really nice guy, I got to meet him at Interbike years ago. It was really nice of him to spend the extra time and walk me through the updates and app for this review. Regarding the motor, I feel like it's actually something different from most hub motors, more like a canister motor that spins the wheel from one side vs. being built into the hub like a lot of other folding models

ElectricBikeReview.com the canister style motor sounds appealing in design...I am going to try and test ride one of these in San Francisco..thank you for the replies

I had a test ride in Edinburgh today. I am 57 years female. Loved it! Roads here are busy and cobbles or potholes so you have to look where you are going on the ground!

I have this bike ....so much fun around town... But with the small wheels and battery, not good for a long commute or big hills. I use it "on demand" mostly which is good for my style of riding. Great video btw,

Thanks Phil! Glad to hear that you're enjoying your Gocycle, and thanks for the feedback about range. I got that impression and my friend Brent used it in throttle mode on mostly flats and got ~17 miles (he weighs ~250). The trade-off between weight and range is a tricky one. Batteries are getting more energy-dense all the time so maybe a future version will be able to hit 25 miles in throttle mode?

Hi Phil, can you comment on how well it does going uphill? My morning commute involves a somewhat big hill and it would be handy not to have to sweat one out getting up it! Thanks

Hi Court! Question for you... You remarked in this video how the smallish 20” wheels made the ride squirrelly. But then I watched your older review of the folding electric Brompton at NYCEwheels, with only 16” wheels, and you never mentioned any ride problem. Would you say that the smaller Brompton wheels make the ride even more squirrelly? Or is it somehow less of an issue? Thanks, and I think you do the best electric bike reviews! Always interesting, well paced, and entertaining!

Sure thing, it's neat how compact this bike can get while also feeling solid and sturdy when unfolded. The disc brake protectors and little pads on the base of the frame points (for when you set it down without wheels) really made me smile, lots of thought and attention to detail here

Hi, any chance you're going to be doing a GoCycle GX review in the near future? They're just arriving at US dealers and I'm very keen to hear your thoughts - it seems to be a substantial change with it now being easy-folding. I'm wondering about range and efficiency of the front-hub motor too.

Hi Court. Great vid as always. Really like Gocycle bikes; great design but have reservations about how durable they are for a larger rider? 😊
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul! My guess is that they'd be more durable than the majority of competing folders because of how the frame folds up... they advertise a max weight rating of 220 lbs (99.8 kgs) while most others are just 200 lbs. Make sure you keep the tire pressure up and you should be good

Great review. I’ve ordered a g4 looking at getting the back pannier rack. What’s the most weight it can hold. I’m going to need it to hold laptop, books etc. If not i’ll stick with the rucksack.

Magnesium is one of the rare resources of this earth. When I think ecologically, I can not buy an electric bicycle with magnesium components. There is one exception, however. I ride the bike for a long time, preferably for a lifetime. After all, this bike is so well built that it could take a few decades. Only the battery causes me a headache. Who can replace the battery later? Is that possible in a simple way? The bike is certainly very well designed and an eye-catcher.

Hi Flo Mo, We agree that all elements are extremely valuable and we considered this when choosing a Magnesium alloy. Magnesium is about the 7th must abundant element on the planet and it is an alloy using magnesium that we use in the frame. Equally importantly for us is the manufacturing method (thixomolding) which releases no harmful gases into the atmosphere. So this in combination with the Gocycle providing a healthy mode of transport, makes it a solid Green choice. Best regards, The Gocycle Team

Ho Flo! Thanks for your feedback, it's cool to see Gocycle responding directly with feedback about Magnesium and I wanted to let you know that yes, the battery pack is also replaceable. I've listed that back in the full writeup, along with some other accessories and stuff. You can visit their accessories page here for a list of other upgrades and replacement parts: www.gocycleusa.com/category-s/108.htm

"Magnesium is the eighth-most-abundant element in the Earth's crust by mass" from the magnesium wikipedia page. It is not a rare resource by any means and it's great that it's being put to good use with this bike.

Quick question, haven't looked around yet - is it compatible with a Bike Trailer? I have the Burley D'Lite .
@ShadowGirl-
@ShadowGirl- 6 жыл бұрын
If your gonna use a trailer, get a bike with a larger battery (at least double what this one has which is not hard to find). Because of the added weight, more watts are needed to assist to the same speeds. This is more of a casual short ride bike.
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 6 жыл бұрын
Hi iLloydski! Most axle-mounted trailers probably won't work here because of the 60 mm connector Pitstop design. You might need a seat post connecting trailer for use with this bike... and I actually think it would work well, regardless of the smaller battery size. People ride non-electric bikes all the time with trailers. Sure, you might run the battery down quickly by pulling a heavier load, but I think you'd still have fun and get decent range... 7+ miles on full power or with the throttle would be my guess... a lot more if you pedal and really help. Check out this trailer: amzn.to/2ImoePt and this cargo trailer: amzn.to/2uGOZMO
@ShadowGirl-
@ShadowGirl- 6 жыл бұрын
In my experience when you pull the max from these (typical ebike) batteries, they will quickly lose ability to provide the voltage until you let them rest (even just seconds begins to restore battery voltage). In the situation where you are pulling a trailer with stuff in it, the motor will likely need all it can get when running, so this battery issue will be experienced. This also happens when using a throttle at full too long, or going up inclines with assistance for too long.

Wanna know what's fucked up? I can buy a pretty sturdy non-electric folding bike for $140 USD, and then an Australian made 2,800W Volition Boost mid-drive motor and 60v battery for $1,800 USD, and I've got a folding bike that's capable of 50mph (80kph), and I've STILL spent less than what this thing costs..

We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. kzbin.infoUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!

That "using your phone as the display" thing is a deal breaker for me, having it as an option is ok, but the only option (on a premium bike no less) I'll pass. Edit: holy cow that was before I saw how it "folded" up (which you should have demonstrated). You should not have to remove the wheels to fold up a folding bike, this thing is way too far into form over function.
@helenbenjafield7351
@helenbenjafield7351 3 жыл бұрын
You don't have to remove the wheels,it's only a" two fold" action,nor do you have to use it with a telephone,the shop can do the initial set-up.
@prw56
@prw56 3 жыл бұрын
@@helenbenjafield7351 Are you sure? This is the GS, I don't think they added a hinge for actual folding until the GX (and newer). And to be clear, I am complaining about the lack of a dedicated display, I know you can set it up with the app and then not use the app. I don't want that, I need at minimum 3 things: speed, pedal assist level, battery power displayed to me while using the bike, and if I'm paying this much for it (the newer models got even more expensive btw, and still don't have this basic feature, the newest one only just added a USB to the handlebars for charging a phone) it aught to have this. I'm pretty angry about it, because I wanted to buy a bike almost like this like this (light wieght, 20 mph, 20 in wheels), but these guys just have their nose up in the air (the same way apple does) excluding basic features on premium products, with extra premium prices for accessories.

I hate to say it but...This bike should weigh 25lbs at this price. All that tech and Magnesium, 36lbs, 2.8K, really? Sometimes I wonder what the hell this company is going for. They don't take the prize for weight. They don't take the prize for speed. They don't take the prize for torque. At this price what are they trying to be the best at? There is nothing about this bike that impresses me.
