I'm 71 and have chronic osteoarthritis in my knees, my e-Brompton is fantastic therapy, I ride my favourite 20 mile hilly West Kent route at an average 15.5mph and my knees feel so much better afterwards. I had a Superlight Brompton for 6 years but lost the impetus to get out on it due to my loss of fitness. The E-B has encouraged me to get back on the bike, so to those of you who are no longer in your first flush of youth, don't be put off, go to your local dealer and try it, find out for yourself, I think you'll love it!

This is quite encouraging for me as I'm 63 and also have osteoarthritis in my knees and blockages of the arteries in both legs making walking very difficult and painful. At my local gym I'm able to use the cycling machine okay, but this is closed due to Covid-19. I live in the hilly foothills of the Pennines and I'm seriously considering the expense of an e-Brompton as a long term therapy.

I bought an electric Brompton 2 months ago and in my opinion, this is a very fair, honest and balanced review. I have a different perspective on the power delivery, I always have the battery on the highest Level 3 setting and yes, when it ramps up, it does come in sharply, but I like that and from traffic lights etc. it allows me to get in front of the other bikes....and cars, for a short while. Just make sure the front wheel is facing forward when you start, otherwise it could surprise you! - good observations about the battery, although my experience is a little less range, but as you say, very easy to charge. I’ve hired normal sized electric bikes in France and Italy, but much prefer the Brompton due to the reduced weight and ease of manoeuvrability. On those bikes, the battery was placed horizontally, which means it was a 2 handed job to load / unload + lifting flaps and locking with a key, whereas the Brompton design is a very elegant solution - really as easy as picking the battery up and putting it down, in a one handed operation. The terminals are protected by a plastic flap, but loading and unloading the battery opens and closes this cover through a built in cam - brilliant! and the next time you ride out, the battery automatically sets itself to the previous power setting. Regarding the extra weight to carry, I fitted a rear rack with the larger Eazy Wheels - this gives stability when folded and allows easy rolling on flat surfaces / railway platforms etc. I too went for the 2 speed version and glad I did - it’s lighter, cheaper and if you do fit a rear rack, the additional cost and weight is completely negated by the 6 speed / 2 speed savings. I’ve found the 2 speed to be perfect for my needs and so simple to operate. My commute is 1.5 hours each way, so I don’t cycle, but if it was up to 10 miles, I definitely would on this bike, without hesitation. I purchased for leisure and fitness (yes you do get exercise with an electric bike) and with the Brompton, I keep it under the stairs, adjacent to the front door, so very easy to pop it into the car boot and drive 10 minutes to a different village and explore new surroundings, if you want a change of scenery. These bikes are “expensive”, but it allows me to do so much more with it than my normal bike and I can use it more often, so for me, a great investment - Thanks for the review and I hope my additional comments help - Peter.

Interesting point. Knowing the gear ratios would be more telling than just the number of gears really. I don't get why it isn't a 3 speed and 6 speed to be honest. As a side note years ago I had a folding bike that was a non-Brompton and it was a pig to ride 5km on it was a feat. This bike rides well with or without power.

I have a Brompton electric for several months now, use it for commuting, in and off the train, and I simply LOVE it. Its fast and flexible in busy urban traffic. Less sweat...very true and a big advantage. Pricy? Yes definitely, but to me it is worth it.

I decided on a coupla Bafang BBSHD 1kw motors each with a 17.5ah battery. Motor and battery add 8k to the bike and cost about £1k per bike - we have a 6 and a 3 speed. These a crank mounted with a low centre of gravity and have 9 assist settings. A disadvantage is that the back whell does not completely fold but these motors can be removed in 15 minutes and the original crankset refitted for going abroad. These exceed current regulations but i am not bothered. Although i cycle around at about 15mph it easily reaches 20-25 on even a low level 3 assist👍🏻 The average range at this level is about 35 miles...

I live in NYC and with the current lockdown, and coronavirus fears, bicycling around the city (rather than taking public transport) is the way to go, and in the summer it gets very hot here so I especially appreciated the information about the relative "sweat factor" that you included in your video. I tried one around Norwich and agree. The assist was slow to come in but when it did, it was surprisingly aggressive and I found myself covering the brakes. I also found it kicked out of assist as I went over cobbles...... That was surprising

I heard somewhere that the E-Brompton's frame is somewhat modified (strengthened?) for the E add on components, so It may be better to buy an E-Brompton rather than adding a motor kit to an existing bike.

E-bromptons are front wheel drift machines, they are great. Do agree the half second before the assist kicks in is annoying but it's the same for all front wheel hub drive motors. Gotta get the bosch or shimano systems if you want better engagement.

Ive had an electric cargo bike for about 3 months now. It saved us from having to buy a car (we’re happily a one car family) I do the school run with our 6 year old on the back of the bike, grocery shopping, and pretty much all my other errands by bike. In 3 months I’ve put about 250 miles on the bike, and lost a little over 20 pounds (about 10 kg) without any real modification to my diet. I’m in my 40’s and have horribly bad knees. The electric pedal assist is *amazing* it feels like it takes 10 years off my knees, and makes cycling not only possible, but really really enjoyable!

It occurred to me this morning why I love my Brompton to the point where I sold all my other bikes and car due to lack of use. The Brompton makes you relearn the sheer joy of freedom of mobility that cycling gave you as a kid - when your bike went literally everywhere with you as it was your method of travel, exploration, play, and exercise.

It's very true. I find it has really opened up my husbands eyes in viewing cycling as a form of transport rather than sport or just a way to work. He runs around town on it wearing normal clothes which is fantastic (I prefer running around on the bike my feet get tired to quickly walking!)

It's saved me this week, I've not been feeling well and it still allows me to get to work by bike. Ebikes are such a game changer! Great thing about the brompton is if you decide you want a bit more excersise you can leave the battery behind, however new studies show that those with ebikes ride more overall so actually get more excersise!

I think I paid around $1700 for my Brompton, so this new electric version with a 6 speed is around $2k more for all the electrics. I would like to have one, but I wish Brompton had better prices. I guess the higher price is easier to accept if you use it for communing to work, but a much harder peal to swallow when using the bicycle for recreational use only. I wonder what future changes Brompton will make to the Brompton electric? Like maybe removing the 15mph limit in USA?

Had a Brompton electric for 6 months now. Owned a normal Brompton for 6 years prior. Shot knee after a failed op meant it was my only choice if I wanted to keep doing my London commute. It’s great for hills. Great off the lights. A tad Frustrating at the 15mph limit as it buffers and it’s not hard to hit this in town as you try to keep up with traffic. So for me with a crappy knee it’s a great tool. But....... I feel like a beta tester for Brompton. It’s needed 3x software reboots as it cuts out over speed bumps and cobbles. I’m on my 3rd firmware upgrade that has improved things (a bit) but it regularly gets errors lights and cuts out. Basically waiting for it to fail again. Anyone else getting issues???

Jonathan Gibson I had a similar problem. Check the connection point, under the battery mount. If you pull down the cover, you will see three, plastic locating lugs that are supposed to help align the electrical connectors. If one breaks and gets flattened, it can interfere with the battery engaging, hence the system does not always turn on.

Good balanced review. I have both so can agree with your points. Very similar to ride. Its just either easier, or faster, depending on how you ride! For those wondering about range, my commute is 26 miles there and back, rural roads and about 1500 ft of climb (so not a lot of stop start). At an average speed of just under 17mph it uses (a little over) 3 of the 5 lights on the battery at full assist, bearing in mind the last light has a flashing phase as well (so its more like 6 lights). I reckon that gives 30-35 reliable miles for a heavy cyclist in modest fitness in those conditions, which is reasonable, and shaves about 15 minutes each way off the time. The assistance does cut in quite sharply but eases off very gently so i don't really perceive the 'step' that some e bikes have, perhaps because it is fairly light. There are undoubtedly better cheaper e bikes, but they don't do what a brompton does quite as well IMO. The size and ease of the fold, coupled with 'relatively' low weight compared to the average e bike is a bonus that will be useful for some, less so for others. They are a bit finicky to maintain, and do rattle a bit over bumps. But overall a credible bike if you want a small folder.And they aren't just for cities! Also, if you're doing longer rides get a rear rack and bag and avoid the massive 'city bag' - its a nice bag, but not at all 'aero'! One other thing - the separation of motor from drive train is a 'sort of' bonus as it doesn't stress the chain or the gear shifting.

Good info there, Phil. Have you had any experience of mending a puncture on an eBrompton? I've done it many times on a conventional bike but wondered if this bike presented particular problems.

@@johnnymac8680 Its not significantly different from a standard brompton - ie a bit more fiddly than a normal bike! Rear wheel is identical - you need to disconnect the gear cable and remove the chain tensioner first. Both wheels have tab washers so as long as you put them in the right way up, the wheel always seats nicely. The front wheel has a very solid connector for the motor which has a screw collar to keep it in place, and is easy to manage, so also very little different from a normal brompton. The only hassle Ive had is that some track pump heads don't fit nicely on the valve because the motor impinges , resulting in too little space between valve stem and motor. You end up bending the valve stem to get the pump on. Be sure to use inner tubes with as short a valve stem as possible.

I have the non-E Brompton. Since I moved closer to work, commuting is now doable. I'm ok without the electric despite the hills. But, I find myself 'weaker' at times for no reason and feeling strong at other times. Hitting that wall so to speak. Can you point me to a nutritional video as I think it's a fueling-assist issue on my part.

My battery pack got a scheduled update and the bike guy told me that the ramp kick-in is a bit smoother now. After viewing this video, I'm going to pay closer attention. My first week on my electric Brompton I was not paying attention to the fact that I was in the 3rd assist from a full stop, and crashed 3 times into curbs and things.

We have 2 Brompton E bikes. You DO need 6 speed especially in windy weather. Level 1 assist is useless & gives virtually no assist. We always run on level 2. & I get 22 miles. The wife gets 25 miles max.For fun I often exceed the electric motor limit & on a local 13 mile circuit I sometimes average 16.5 mPH average because I push it for exercise. The electric bit helps on the hilly bits . We have the bikes on our boat so we can go touring at the different places we visit & we can get to stores for groceries etc. We love our Brompton e bikes- Both of us over 70 years old

I see Brompton electric mostly pitched as a short distance city commute bike. Is it also suited for longer trajectories, is it comfortable enough ? It also lacks something to carry bags on top of the rear wheel, is there an accessory that can be add ? I am interested in a foldable e-bike, mainly for tourism, take it along on the train and in the car, and do some cycling at the destination. The weight and small form factor when folded is certainly interesting compared to other foldable e-bikes, but will you be able to ride comfortably on longer sight seeing trajectories ? I just tested a foldable e-bike which has suspension on the fore fork and saddle, and it felt comfortable, but the weight to carry it around when using public transport instead of the car seems rather heavy.

Hi Marc. Thank you for the questions. You can travel as far as you like on a Brompton. My longest ride to date on the standard Brompton was 74km in one go and on the Electric 54km. This summer I plan on riding a 200km Audax on the standard. It's surprisingly comfortable. If you google touring on a Brompton you will see many people travel all over the world on them 😀 If you get a bike you find awkward and heavy you will be less likely to use it as much as you described above. The Bromptons are so well-loved because they fold up quickly (and easily once you learn the knack) and are easy to carry compared to most other folding bikes. They also last for years and years. As for a bag well you can see in my video I have one on the back. Others buy a rack for the back that they can strap things to, and others have ways of strapping backpacks to the back of the stem. So plenty of options for bags, even Brompton have a larger front bag on offer. 😀

Great job- that was a really informative and helpful review, and done from the everyday cyclist's viewpoint too. The price of the bike is kind of insane at £3k, but I got one anyway, because I'm giving up my car and I needed independent transport 6 miles to my local rail station so that I can travel. My other ebike is 28kg, much heavier than the brompton- it is a much more stable ride in mud and rough country lanes, but its a full size MTB, and a few times I've had hassle getting it onto a train. I got the brompton mostly to deal with that issue of access onto trains. I don't know of another bike that combines these qualities of relative lightness, plus a super-compact fold that will allow you onto any train at any time of day. For me personally, the brompton electric (with a trailer when needed) is the perfect transport solution, and this is a great review of the bike. Well done.

I use a 2 speed Brompton on my commute (or at least I did before lockdown...) You mentioned the twitchy handling early in the video - how does having a motor in the front wheel affect this? A couple of summers ago I came off the Brompton twice, and with the front wheel being deflected by road irregularities a factor in both offs, I'm very careful with the front end when riding in non-optimal conditions

Well, I’m just not convinced electric bikes are the most efficient design in the urban use-case. Taking into account weight and time to destination, they’re not worth the expense imho. Can the batteries be recycled? Is there a buy back or disposal deposit?

An electric bike that weighs 15/17kg is pretty impressive. Most are 20+kg. Being able to fold it up and take it in the boot of a car, bus, train makes it a very flexible form of transport. Considering once you buy it there's no insurance, MOT, car tax, petrol etc to pay it's a VERY economical way to get around that is also good to the environment.

I try my best, the whole shared space thing is something somewhat new to me since moving to Bristol where there is far more of it than I'd like, but it's not the fault of the pedestrians. I think the last thing anyone wants to do is crash or hurt someone else, but some have great confidence in their ability to handle their bikes. I expect the unexpected as taught in driving lessons 😀

I do think that brompton should have made a upgrade kit for those who have a brompton already. I mean if they wanted to do it where you had to get it installed by an authorized brompton dealer, that would have been fine. I understand having the ebike model if you don’t own either model of the bike. However, I’ve already spent around $2000 for mine. I don’t want to drop 2x that for an additional bike that happens to be an ebike.

I just bought a racing green Brompton, ... the previous owner installed the 36V 250W model, .. not sure about the controller/battery pack. NYCeWheels put it together for him. Crystalyte's are a 'throttle only' direct drive gearless hub motor. Maybe they can assist you with choices/options, since NYCeWheels recently went out of business.

Brompton Electric Awaited. I ordered the 6 gear electric. It arrived in my local store 2 weeks ago. I can’t pick it up as the store is closed - Evans Cycles. Frustration! Despite the Government permitting bike shops to open it seems Evans are not and missing out on potential business. With luck I may get it in several months time!

I've had a Brompton for twenty years, and I think the electric version is a welcome addition. There is one glaring fault with it though; the placement of the battery! One of the great things about a Brompton is the luggage system, I love the sizeable touring bag that fits up-front, this is lost when the battery goes there. Brompton has been incredibly lazy with the design. They could have incorporated the battery into the long handlebar stem, and or the frame tubes.

Ride On Cycling that’s just a very expensive, but inferior copy of a Carradice saddlebag. Check out the Nelson Longflap and the Camper Longflap. The “Longflap” means the main lid or flap is folded double. Unfold it and you can secure something underneath, a tent or sleeping bag perhaps. It is no compensation for losing the T-bag up front. I live in Taiwan, and we buy water in 6-litre bottles. I can carry 2 of these bottles up front and one in the saddlebag. So, my initial comment stands, Brompton was very lazy with the positioning of the battery.

@@photosoftaiwan it's less about the bag and more about the convenience of the attachment, the quick release is compatible with Carradice bags if you prefer their bags. My husband has a T bag for his Brompton but I prefer having the bag on the back of the bike, having a less rigid bag because I can use it as a normal bag off the bike, it's also a bag I can use it on my commuter too. So that versatility is great for what I need. I guess it all depends on what you want to use the bike/bag for. Perhaps as battery technology evolves the option to integrate one into the seat tube or frame could become a possibility. Ebike tech is evolving quickly so it will be interesting to watch what happens.

15mph is the limit in Europe. However I've ridden other e-bikes that go faster than that (it's 20mph in Canada) and they are quite capable of handling speeds over 15mph, a lot of people (myself included) can pedal faster than 15mph without assist.

It's one of the things that annoyed me about the electric bikes I've tested. I'd much prefer to have full control over the power applied. Also the fact that the motor cuts out just below the speed I normally cycle at. Together means I could only own an ebike if it wasn't road legal.

It's ridiculous . 250W is slower than most cyclists so how can limiting a bike make it safer than most cyclists . In Canada it's 500W and in the States it's 750W . A good review. When I no longer worked in London I decided to sell my old Brompton and IMMEDIATELY regretted it. I was the best bike I had ever owned and I used it daily. I'm getting a bit older now and there is some appeal to electric bikes, especially as I live in a hilly town. When I think back to when I used a Brompton daily, it was fine for the 10 to 15 minute regular rides that I undertook, but there were some longer rides where I would get a bit hot. The idea of an electric Brompton just makes so much sense. I like the design where the motor is low down which would add to the centre of gravity (it would be better if the battery was also lower down). In my opinion, the Brompton is one of the best bikes ever made, but making it electric is the future. I'm not a 'green' nut, but an electric Brompton offers the convenience of cycling with the convenience of powered transport but in a tiny package. I just loved the way I could keep my Brompton under my desk and I took pride in not owning a bike lock (if it is always with you, you don't need a lock - and I would frequently leave it with the doorman of the headquarters of some big banks in London).

I'm in my sixties and still enjoy cycling, but find that hills and headwinds have become a real limitation for me. I purchased a Brompton Electric last year expecting it to be the ideal solution, however, I had to return it because I couldn't get it to climb hills. The pedal torque required to initiate assistance was greater than my ageing legs could sustain, so for me it was not fit for purpose. It seems the Brompton Electric was designed by young fit people for young fit people. It's a shame because I loved the bike and I think for the sake of some software tweaking, Brompton missed a real opportunity to attract the older cyclists who would perhaps have benefitted the most.

On a hill it is really important to have it so you can get that momentum! I'm hoping this improves in future. Never leave your Brompton outside if you don't have to. They hold their value and are popular with thieves for that reason. If you are in a situation of having to lock it up for a few minutes take the battery with you, it's not secured to the bike and costs over £500 to replace.

Good review - I need to write mine up. I had similar issues with the from rest acceleration which seemed to have been sorted out since it's 100-mile service. As for gears, I would recommend getting the 6-speed because of the extra weight - especially if/when the battery goes flat on your ride home.

Thanks for your candid views on this bicycle. Personally I think it's very expensive for what it is. Particularly since add on kits are available which make a cheaper but nonetheless quality hack. Swytch seems to be the best pedelec kit which doesn't look too hacky. I don't have one; mine is a Grin Tech kit, developed in Canada, but sold through Crystalyte Europe in Belgium. (See further ahead in this thread for more details). People on shared paths cycling at 15mph need to get re-educated. There's way too much emphasis on cycling for sport in the UK. We need a northern European attitude to cycling.

Dewex Dewex I have an add on kit - crystallite motor from v-fiets(now closed) and after some teething problems it works fine. As you say, the electric is stupidly expensive for what it is. Buy a kit and get somebody to fit it and you will probably end up with something superior and in the colours you want.

@@machoneboard I have the same kit, although I got mine from the Belgian reseller (shop.crystalyte-europe.com/home.php), as V-FIETS in NL had stopped retailing and gone completely wholesale by the time I bought. I bought the SAW20 motor, controller, hand throttle, torque washers and Cycle Analyst V3 for around 600EUR. I did this, as I did not want a pedelec but wanted a twist and go. I am disabled. After connecting the kit up without the CA V3, I found the default firmware on the controller adequate for my needs, and have never connected the CA V3; I may sell it. They are 150EUR. They did not sell me a mount for the controller, so I made my own. They were a bit crap on sales support, I must say, and there were no fitting instructions with the kit. Ebikes.ca, where the stuff comes from, have lots of great guide material online , though, as I'm sure you're aware. Cyrstalyte Europe wanted to sell me a 36V 13Ah battery for 450EUR, and I knew I could get one from Ebay for 250EUR, which I did. I had to make a connector and mount for that battery with CAD/3D printing, as it's a weird rack mounted battery which should go in a proprietary holder; a holder which I do not have. I, like you, have had some teething problems; mainly with the breakable connector to the controller, which connects the battery to the controller. I have finally found a breakable 250V 20A connector from Neutrik, which comes either as in-line or surface mount to plug. My battery is in a detachable 55 litre carrier bin which I have on the front of my Brompton; I built this and have been using it to travel/work with daily for 12 or so years, so it's a natural place for the battery to live. The whole rig is maybe 22Kg, but I don't use stairs to move it around, so I don't mind.

What's the point exactly? A swytch or any other kit costs around 1000 euros in total. If you want your existing bike to be electrified, this is a nice solution, clearly. Otherwise, the ready made solution is a good opportunity. There should'nt be a versus match here but a choice.

Most of the kits comparable in terms of performance are at least 900€. Without being mounted. If you already owned a Brompton, you'd probably know that you won't spend less than 1400€ if you want certain mandatory options such as the dynamo, the 6 gears, the bag adapter, etc.. At least if you want it new. To me, the price is not an obstacle for a ready made e-Brompton. The Vektron of Tern, which is more or less the closest alternative is about 3000€ too. I think you can go below off course, but the initial price of the e-Brompton doesn't sound so huge to me.

latest Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries you can charge up to 1000 times, so very long time if you are charing once or twice a week .I'm not sure which battery Brompton but you will get a minimum of 300 cycles even if it's the older technology .

I was considering the electric version but in truth it is over priced at £2700 or around that mark. Yes, it is a great fold up bike but with the electric version you get less of a bike, There is no back rack. I would get the non electric Brompton but I can get better electric bikes for less money. In fact, I could get 2 good e-bikes and still have money left over for what the Brompton costs. Thanks for the video.

That's the beauty of cycing there's a bike out there for everyone. For those that need the foldup for flexibilty and use in multimodal journeys Bromptons are a great option. If you have space to store a bigger bike and don't need to worry about taking it on trains then as you said there are other options. It's all about getting clear your priorities and what you need a bike for. There's a bike that the company I work for sells that I'm looking forward to reviewing, it's a great entry level e-bike with a belt drive.

The motor on the Brompton doesn't have much torque, which is why it doesn't take off like a rocket. If they increase the torque it comes at the cost of more battery drain.

I love the Brompton, It's made in London and parts are easy to get, you have a great dealer network and they are proven to be durable and reliable, that's why I was so disappointed with the electric one, if you look on Gumtree you will see lots of them come up for sale( three in the last two weeks ) the most recent one was a guy in London who had bought one in April and was selling it, he had the original box and it was used only twice !! I'm looking for a 6-speed black one-second hand (not electric). They had a chance to produce something really magnificent, for example, there are rear hub electric motors being produced for 16-inch bike wheels that integrate the battery into the hub motor eliminating the need for the battery bag dangling and bouncing on the front fork, they could have designed there own rere hub motor which would be a simpler more elegant design, with a small wire-free handlebar controller. They had years to do this and with the resources and help from Williams, it could have been great. Unfortunately, they went for the cheap option, old technology, an old-fashioned Battery and an old fashioned front hub motor, in my opinion, it's all about maximising profit, if they had of gone for a rear hub with the integrated battery it would not have cost them no more than a couple hundred dollars more, you can buy Chinese made ones for few hundred dollars the front hub versions for much less, they could have gone into partnership with one of the better European manufactures( or there is an excellent Israeli manufacturer ) they would have the security of supply as well. Bottom line is they know they have a dedicated following who will buy almost anything they produce, disappointing, to say the least, and a missed opportunity and it leaves the door open for a clever company to produce a Brompton type 16inch wheel folding bike, all they have to do is copy the Brompton design ( patents are now up)and give it an intelligent rere hub motor with integrated battery and bobs your uncle. The guy who runs the company now is a brilliant marketing guy, but he has dropped the ball with this one he has left the door open for some other Company like Tern ( who produce the Vectron )to produce a Brompton like a bike with a rere hub motor with an integrated battery, and people will have to choose between the Brompton bouncing battery version or the integrated hub version made by someone else. It could be that Brompton has a rere hub version in the works and will bring it out in a couple of years when they have milked this version or when they get wind of a new competitor. That way they will have all the bouncing battery version owners upgrading to get the new thing, now that would be marketing genius if a bit cynical! Oh and a great review by the way.
