The Global Center for Religious Research (GCRR) hosted the 2nd Annual International eConference on Atheism, which brought together authors, social-scientists, historians, philosophers, specialists, and students from all over the world to discuss the theme of "God and Suffering."
The purpose of this multidisciplinary virtual conference was to advance the socio-political, historical, and philosophical understanding of God's role in human misery and its implications for religion. The two-day conference provided an interdisciplinary platform for scholars, educators, and practitioners to present their research to international audiences from all different backgrounds.

The idea of a "problem of evil" is dependent on the assumption that human beings are in some way entitled to not suffer. Without that assumption, the "problem of evil" dissolves. If we have no right to not suffer, then there is no obligation for a divine power to prevent our suffering. One can still argue that a divine power, out of goodness, can still want to reduce human suffering, but that is a matter of will, not of moral or rational necessity. Ala William of Ockham, we can only try to understand the will of the divine power as it manifests in the world, and since we see suffering, it must be part of that will.
