The Word of God is reliable because God Himself is reliable. He is the source of all objective truth. In this message, R.C. Sproul helps us look at several aspects of God’s truth, explaining that when we wholeheartedly lean on the Lord, we can learn how to become more trustworthy people for those who are in need around us.

Oh, how I miss those old days. This is probably late 80s or early 90s. When God's professed people were more reserved and respectable. 😢

yea be yea and no be no is the number 1 best parenting advice, a child that "knows" this will never act out . example 'you touch that and I will spank you ' and the child does not get spanked when they disobey

In the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus says, "Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool... Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil" (Matthew 5:33-37, ESV). Jesus' teaching here emphasizes the importance of honesty and integrity in our words and actions. He commands against making oaths or swearing by anything, as it can lead to a lack of trust and the potential for deception. Instead, Jesus encourages simplicity and truthfulness in our communication, where a straightforward "Yes" or "No" should be sufficient. Therefore, Christians should refuse to swear on the Bible.

Apostolic practice confirms that Jesus did not intend to abolish oath taking altogether. For example, Acts 18:18 tells us that the Apostle Paul made vows even after he was converted to Christ. This should not surprise us, for the practice of swearing vows was commonplace for Jews such as Paul. Christ took a vow, not to take communion again until He returned. I don't think we should take a vow with the intention of not fulfilling it no matter which book we swear on.

@@DogSoldier1948 Taking a vow is not swearing to tell the truth on the Bible. The New Testament does not provide explicit evidence of the apostles swearing oaths, it does emphasize the importance of integrity, honesty, and the significance of one's word being trustworthy. The teachings of Jesus and the apostles encourage a lifestyle characterized by truthfulness and faithfulness in all aspects of life.

@@DogSoldier1948 James 5:12 repeats what Jesus said in Matthew 5: 33-37 almost verbatim. James , like Jesus, is not forbidding the use of oaths altogether. There are many appropriate circumstances in life where oaths and vows should be made. Jmaes is spealing of ordinary speech in the Christian community. As Christians, our word is to be trustworthy so that we need not to swear and oath everytime we make committments and promises to each other.

I used to think Pilate was being cynical, like he’s the 1st postmodernist, but the better view is he’s coming around & really curious - still as a coward he caves in to the Jews’ blackmail, viz “no friend of Caesar”

If Jesus is the truth then one should believe what he says and not what men say he said. The Church has spent 1700 years telling people what it says Jesus said - not what he really said. Sorry to say but that’s the truth.

@KnightFel It's all in the Gospels, with one other reference made by Paul in his epistel that's not in the Gospel, where Paul quotes Jesus as saying "it is better to give than to receive". Other than that it is all in the Gospels.
